Good Deal on a Small B.O.B or Pack w/Pics

These are the bags I am refering to.
In fact, I picked them up at Major Surplus ( one of the better stocked surplus stores in this area)
I gave one of the survival kits I was talking about to the woman friend of mine as a birthday gift yesterday.
She likes it, and all the gear inside, and stated that it would make a great camera bag.
Inexpensive enough to give her another one for X-Mas:thumbup:

Ha! You might wanna get her another before she takes the gear out of the one she has and fills it with camera stuff instead....:D

thought i already posted this, sorry if it comes up twice.i had one of that companies[voodoo tactical] backpacks and the shoulder strap broke about 5 miles from my car.i had a molle water bladder carrier and the button on one of the two molle straps broke the first time i undid it.

they steal all of maxpeditions ideas and make very unreliable stuff.i get what i pay for and if it is to be used in a b.o.b. situation it has to be reliable.survival gear is not the place to pinch pennys.

True, you do get what you pay for.
I did inspect them when I bought them, and mine has performed satisfactorly.
I do understand that they aren't "Maxpedidtion" quality (my every day bag is a Falcon II, and it has endured years of wear nicely) but, for the price, they function.

Here are some pictures from Pitdog of his Maxpedition pack:

Short of using a knife, is the belt removeable on the Proteus? I got the CTD bag partly as a proof of concept for upgrading to the Proteus, but I'm liking the cheap add-on belt I got. It's fairly rigid, and supports my other gear well. In the pics I've seen of the Proteus, the belt looks like simple nylon webbing.

GAH! I was all good until the picture of the little guy was posted. Now I have 2 coming in the mail....

Hehehe, apparently this is going to be the unofficial "BF W&SS Belt Pouch"... :D

Warning! Members easily swayed by inexpensive gear! Do not tempt...

Now I'm wondering should I get one now because the butt pack that I modified is a PITA sometimes.

Did you get the belt from CTD too?

Yeah, this one:

It's an airsoft belt, UTG by Leapers. The keepers are kind of useless, but I thought the detachable mag carriers might be handy. I haven't found a use for them yet, because everything I need for a PSK and dayhike items can be rigged to the bag or my additional gun pouch. The belt is sturdy enough, though, and is easily adjustable.

I just bought a Katadyn Hiker Pro, and zip-tied my shirt in a roll to the compression straps to make room for putting the filter in the bag. This little guy can do anything! :D

I've also been reading about Maxpedition's iffy warranty reputation, and their stuff evidently isn't US made anyway, so I'm going to run with this Chinese knock-off gear until it fails, and then re-evaluate.

You've really got me tempted with this pack and belt combo. Seems perfect for shorter trips or as my BOB.

Just might have to pick one up soon.

I have been trying to tear this thing up guys, and I can tell you that it is pretty damn tuff. I really do not see durability being a problem with this pack for most uses.

And NO, the Maxpedition stuff is NOT Made in the USA. When you look on the tag inside of a Maxpedition product it reads "American Design Made in Taiwan"
It is good stuff, but in this particular case I'm not sure that the Proteus is worth $40-43 more. I really don't think it is for all but the most rugged user. And by that I am talking about someone who is carrying and using it(opening/closing zippers, loading/unloading) and trekking through rough terrain or guiding on a near daily basis. I started this thread, and I own a Proteus. I also just ordered four more of these bags to make up kits for family members. I certainly would not use them for that if I hadn't checked it out thoroughly and didn't think they would stand up. Heck, you could even replace zipper pulls if you were worried about them and still be way below the cost of the Maxpedition stuff.

I've been carrying this bag from CTD for a few years now in daily use. It carries a reasonably heavy load (3 M16 mags, 4 HK mags, lotsa bandaging, and a few other items). No problems from the bag, but I did replace the strap initially because I had another with better padding that I preferred. Don't really know where that original strap is or how sturdy it would be.

Looking at the shoulder strap, which is 1.5" nylon webbing, the weak point is the metal clips that attach to the D-rings on the bag. I can see from the way in which they're put together how they would likely fail. The clips could easily be replaced with cheap mini-biners, or the strap could be tied to the bag with 550 cord.

If I were going with a shoulder rig, I'm not sure I'd like this bag as much as I do, though. I'd prefer something that lays flatter against the body. As a waist-pack, it shines.

I just noticed that the compartments are lined with a rubbery plastic material. That should add some degree of water repelency over plain nylon fabric. Nice touch, but the zippers and stitching aren't sealed, so don't expect it to be dunkable. ;)

Gonna get a better belt. Maybe a suspender/belt combo for mine. After hiking several miles with the bag and using out of it, I've found that with it's weight and the added weight of a canteen, the belt rides heavy and low.

I went green, good stuff in general though! I've got a whole other thread on these somewhere so I won't post too many pics...
