Good Does More Harm Than Evil

Thank you munk. There's some good things for me to ponder and sleep on tonight.

Peace.

Me too, Michelle, and thanks so much for weighing in. Come back here more often.

Good does not do more harm than evil. How could it?

Evil intention always equals an evil result.

Good intention may sometimes result in an unintended or accidental result.

If this unlucky but statistically probable result has occurred... it only means you're not perfect.

Cheer up, munk. Sounds like something went bad, but more things good than bad must happen through good intent.

I rarely answer philosophical threads... hoping I don't get burned on this one.

Or unintentionally offend someone, through the intent of trying to help... which, actually, would prove the point.

Ok, fine. I'll be the one to speak up. Grappler, I think that you are way off base. Look, Nasty DOES NOT represent HI. He has no dog in this race. What he is is a friend of Yangdu and this forum. He is a well respected member and does his damnedest (sorry darnedest just doesn't have the same ring to it) to keep things orderly. You want to wave your dollars in his face? Go ahead, he has no stake in it. You're only going to hurt Yangdu.

Personally, i found you post narrow-minded and ill-fitting for this forum. Islam is not ALWAYS a violent religion. I'm a Christian. Does that mean that i think "God hates Fags" or that it is my duty to get the most bible-thumping candidate into the white house? Does it mean that I have to spit on others of other faiths or run them through? Not in the slightest. Generalization is what tears men of all colors, creeds, and beliefs apart. This is just my two-cents worth.

Munk is right. This is OUR forum. It used to be that Nasty (or any mod) would not HAVE to edit things out. THey would be called out by us, the regulars would "police" ourselves. It seems that everyone now is either too appathetic to stand up to things that do NOT represent what Bill was trying to build. OR they are too worried about getting into trouble with the Mods. Personally, I'm just going throw it out there that Nasty is having to crack down because WE have lost our focus as a group. This place ISN'T the same, and it's not better. My most honored friends, i believe that many of us have lost the fire in our bellies. Tomorrow, I'll probably regret writing anything, but I just HAVE to throw it out there.

"Between the will to do good and the act does the shadow." -Grob

Is this the right quote, Grob? I'm thinking about it. There's something there to really think about.

munk

I'm pretty sure it's a paraphrase from T. S. Eliot's Poem "The Hollow Men." Since I think it's still under copyright, I won't paste it. Brilliant stuff. It references Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" in its first line, so to amuse eggheads, Brando's character read the poem in "Apocolypse Now."

I appreciate your honesty, Jake. You know that.
I've read some really outragious stuff here on Blade forums. You'll have to tell me, because I apparently didn't note Grappler's post and the offensive line, how bad it was.

But I've read some awful stuff on Blade forums. So what has changed? Is the managment of BF changing the rules, or reinterpreting it's rules, or ??? Or is this Nasty's interpretation; tell me, because I don't know. Nasty explained what he was doing. I didn't take it as something new in BF, I took it as something new here, that Nasty wanted. And this is old ground; Nasty works under both BF and Yangdu's blessings.

You are right about people not speaking up. I hate to see so many giving up and leaving for 'R" forum. People feel they can no longer speak openly here.

It's a great line. It uses english, 'does' in a original way, breaking form. Poetic and strong.

HI Munk,

That California law sucks. In Georgia our guv just passed a law that not only can you have a gun in your car with no carry permit, but that unlike the old law where the gun had to be locked in your glove compartment, you can have the gun anywhere you want in your car.

He earlier passed another law that if you find a burglar in your home you can shoot him and that you do not have to try to flee.

I would hope that would be a criminal deterrent!

oddly enough, i was just reading massad ayoob's article in the backwoodsman magazine current issue today... about carrying guns in your car, methods, laws, and other things. some states still have a "passing through" law that lets non residents carry for reasons of protection. but not all states.

there are some federal laws as well that some states have chosen to block and do their own thing as well. just don't be caught with a .22 shell casing in your trunk in the likes of MA (and maybe CA). oops. the kind of thing someone could lob into your car through an open window as an excuse for later, for instance :P

there are lots of bad people out there who want what you have, and a few bad people in the guess of good people who just want to mess with you, because they can.

just remember, most of the dead people in the past, who fought in wars over various principles and thoughts, died for OTHER people's visions, probably not theirs, and certainly more than a few for the cause of religion. the christians are especially in this lot because of the one true god thoughts. islam, back in the day, while strict, wasn't as violent as all that, but they certainly would stand up for their rights. look where that has got us today.

"You can use whatever language you wish in Whine and Cheese. In other forums it is wise to follow generally accepted community standards, which vary somewhat from one community to another." Cougar Allen

Post number three in thread "Why no Blade forums list of verbotten words?" IN Whine and Cheese

Cougar is responding a poster who was asked not to use a couple words, kick-as- and Da--. in this forum by Nasty.

So, Our community has changed in what can be said per Yangdu and Nasty.

This of course is not addressing hate speech.

i don't know what happened and i sure hope us newcomers aren't contributing to the deterioration of this forum. i think if this truly is your forum i, and most likely the other younger members, would be plenty willing to do as the romans.

on topic, astra beat me to it. evil and accidents are distinct. michelle posted about what our good intentions can become or come from, which over the past few months i've been examining and writing about. too much confidence and too much freedom are a combustible formula for proud, self-righteous, inconsiderate dispositions. these are the progenitors of self interested focus. so many have already said in this and the other thread that we need malice to notice, measure, and appreciate the benevolence. we'll take our rights for granted till they're taken away, just like our parents used to do when we needed to be punished. i just posted an extensive rant on the rights that people lay claim to that they don't really deserve on another forum. it's as if good and evil don't really exist as far as the law is concerned. we put a restraining order on religion. regardless, i don't feel the purpose of the government is to promote morality, it's to preserve the peace. the people sacrifice some liberties to a sovereign and in return all are subject to the same regulations which help our feeble, shortsighted minds to better grasp the concept that 'all men are created equal.' michelle also quoted nietzsche, who's idea of Ubermensch i referred to in the other rant. we're there already. that's what america upholds now and i hesitate to call it america any longer. i'm ready to reassess the definition of evil i've held for the past few years, thanks to michelle. this sets me back quite a bit, sometimes that has to happen.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

I have no connection to HI other than to police this forum. Yes...Police. I was asked to do this, did not volunteer, and will do the job, but to be blunt, some folks have made it pretty unpleasant at best. Some of the older folks will see that *I* as an individual, post very little. I have to spend so much time sorting out the garbage that I have nothing left to participate with as myself.

As for your post Grappler, you posted a message suggesting that "we" had to kill all of a religious group. You didn't qualify it, limit it or exclude any of it's members so it had to be read as men, women and children. It doesn't matter if you don't see it or not, society does. Your attempt to dismiss my actions both as a Mod and personally will result in no future opportunities for you to learn via warnings. This is not my choice, but yours. Just to help you understand that this is not personal, I won't even assign the automatic 30 point penalty this time for "Sassin' a Mod" as determined by Spark. Consider this as me wrestling you with one arm tied behind my back.

Jake said it clearly...this is a different group than it used to be.

If you all would take *yourself* to task to act responsibly, I wouldn't have to touch anything except the occasional help in resetting a password or such.

Personally, I would much prefer it that way.

You are right about people not speaking up. I hate to see so many giving up and leaving for 'R" forum. People feel they can no longer speak openly here. munk

Why are you making this a cross forum issue Munk? You've used your 'R' forum reference twice. Stop it. Cross forum bashing is not allowed on any forum that I know of. Other forums are certainly not at fault in the least.

Nasty, you read one sentence by me and label me a bigot and racist.
You did not give the others a chance to read what I posted so who knows what they think.I could have said anything. "Hate Language" ROTFL!

As long as you're here I'm not.
Enjoy your little club.
Seems new people are all treated like [Language] unless they grovel.
As far as I'm concerned Nasty what you said to me are fighting words.
I'm not going to be judged by a sentence, edited, banned and insulted by you or anyone else.
I don't go where I'm not wanted.
I moderated a political forum for years.
So I speak from experence.
Power corrupts.
Absolute power corrupts absolutly.
Anything you disagree with, you can edit, label that person a racist/bigot and ban them.
That is an old tool of the left.
You throw freedom of speach right out the window.
You voting for Clinton?
You remind me of her.

Andy, I think he is actually bashing BF, not the other forum. He's saying people are leaving for the greener pastures of the other forum than stay here and be moderated to death(no offense Nasty, don't mean you personally) and have the cantina stagnate with no real discussion.

It still creates cross forum angst and uses the other forum to achieve that angst. Cross forum bashing is not acceptable regardless of how its accomplished. The other forum is a non issue here. Please leave it alone.

Rhetorical question:

If you are speeding, and get a speeding ticket, should you:

A. Blame the cop.

B. Blame the government.

C. Blame yourself.

One of my favorite lines in the Star Wars films is in part 3. It is pertinant to the original topic in this thread. Anniken has just pledged allegance to Sidious and been named Vader. He has agreed that the Jedi must all die as enemies of the state.

"Once again the Syth will rule the Galaxy. And we will have peace." Darth Sidious.

Peace is good, is Sidious good? Is Vader. Anniken has grappled with this 'good person' question just as we are. I think that line is poignant.
