Good edc blade for school

The GFSZA was struck down as unconstitutional in U.S. vs. Lopez, 514 U.S. 549 (1995) as it violates the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The first two paragraphs of this article explain why the law was invalidated:

Look to your state laws for guidance. For example, here in Michigan, the only prohibitions are against concealed weapons - we can openly carry weapons legally. Caveat - this only applies to public schools. Private schools (i.e., private properties) are a completely different matter.

Are you not in the US? Does your school not have "drug free, Weapons free zone" signs posted?

As mentioned by McVey the GFSZA (gun free school zone act) of 1990 is a federal mandate (USC 18 §992 (c-q)) and it's to long to read threw the text to see it it also mentions knives but that could be why you see no county / city / state laws, there is no need to make local laws when a US law covers something.

A quick google of "knife policy in Georgia high schools" shows a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY. You can not carry a knife in any high school in this nation. An email reply from the principal saying it was alright to carry a knife would be the surest way to have them fired!

The West Forsyth "Student Code of Conduct: 2013-2014" Definition of a weapon;

Any object that is or may be used to inflict bodily injury or to place
another in fear for personal safety or well-being. A partial list of items that may
be defined as dangerous weapons includes: any real or facsimile firearm, pistol,
starter pistol, or revolver; any BB gun, pellet gun, paintball gun, or any other
object designed or intended to propel a missile capable of inflicting an injury;
any knife or other bladed instrument of any blade length, including any pocket
knife, switchblade, butterfly knife, dirk, Bowie knife, ballistic knife, straight edge
razor or any tool containing a blade; any razor blade or other type blade;
any
destructive device, including explosive device, explosive material, flammable
compound, ammunition, or fireworks; any toxic, caustic or infectious substance;
any bat, club, blackjack or other bludgeon-type weapon; any stun gun or taser;
any spring stick, metal knucks, or chain; any flailing instrument consisting of two
or more rigid parts connected in such a way as to allow them to swing freely,
which may be known as a nunchaku or fighting chain; any throwing star, oriental
dart or any weapon of like kind; any item that produces, directs or redirects a
laser beam; or any object that is wielded in an attempt to inflict bodily injury or to
place another in fear for personal safety or well-being.

Sorry kid, you'll poke your eye out!

That is strange, because the student handbook that they gave us (paper copy) said that weapons according to (listed a couple if laws) are not allowed at school.

Looks like there may be conflicting information. At first I didn't understand your statement but I see you are simply referencing your student handbook which conflicts with what the principal told you.

The quote states that essentially any knife is illegal in West Forsyth of any blade length and are defined as weapons. That includes multi-tools which contain a blade.

Go to your principal's office with your handbook and the online version and sort things out.

When I was in high school (5 years ago) a lot of the guys including my self carried knives at school. There was a rule against it but as long as you were a stand up guy no one hassled you. Ahhh the joys of Texas

Cold Steel two handed greatsword. At the end of class hold it high in the air and at the top of your lungs yell: FREEEEEDDOOOOOOMMMM ! ! ! !"

Well, heck - a ball point pen or well sharpened pencil fits that definition! Reminds me of a saying - "Assault is a behavior, not a device."

I carried an SAK in high school. The main blade did have a lock on it. That's my suggestion. When I go into Chicago (2.5" blade limit") I carry a Spyderco dragonfly. But for high school, especially in this day and age, an SAK or leatherman would be your safest bet. I graduated high school nearly 20 years ago, and even then my high school frowned upon people carrying any kind of knife, though there was no rule against it.

I would just stay knifeless. Perhaps not every teacher is aware that you can carry a knife, and it may cause some headaches down the road.

Besides, a knife is not needed in high school. In all of my years going to school, I don't ever think I've said "I sure could have used my knife today in class!"

Spyderco Cat if you want a one-hand opening liner-lock. Otherwise a Spyderco Dragonfly. Spyderco Techno has 2.55" blade...
For a slip joint I suggest a Victorinox Cadet or Compact, Case Sway Back Jack or Sway Back Gent.

I went to school with a Model 94 30/30 in the rifle rack of my 68 F100 parked in the school parking lot, and a fixed blade hunting knife on my belt because I always hunted right after school on my way home. The parking lot always had three to five other pickups with the same sort of thing going on. Gone are those days... I am afraid forever.

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in H1... Razor edge, YELLOW HANDLES, not threatening. I cut coupons in BJ's with it all the time

I'm thinking if I do get something, I will probably get a leather man... And for whoever said they never thought "I could really use a knife in this class" the class where I most wish that is my technical theater. Wiring lights/speakers, building sets, opening boxes for new props/equipment... Yeah scissors don't cut it (no pun intended)

We were allowed to carry knives when I was in High School as long as the blades were 3.5" or under, but enforcement had less to do with the length and more to do with how much they looked like weapons. Teachers would often borrow knives off students, and one kid even stabbed his cousin on accident, and there was no uproar. Columbine happened around that time, and the year after I graduated I noticed that there was a lot of restrictions (they started drug testing kids that drove to school or played sports, beefed up check in and check out procedures, and a few other things). Even though half the boys carried some kind of pocket knife (Case hawkbills and Sharks Tooth, Hammer head or Makos were popular), no one even dared to think that they would use a knife in a fight. Maybe some desks got vandalized, but the policy wasn't a problem.
