Good Job!!!!! Here's your next clue!

How do I contact Jerry? I think I have it and can support my reasoning with clues, but I don't know how to contact him for confirmation.

Mr Busse,

How can I contact you. I can't e-mail through the forums and I can't send a private message either. It says action not allowed or something like that. I am bursting at the seams here and making travel plans, if I am right then I am leaving tomorrow or as soon as I can find out if I am right.

Thaks,
James

UH.....No

I guess my excitment has caused my already strained cognitive skills to drop down to that a fingernail. Thanks, i'll try that address.

Hello All, I did get an e-mail back and here is a big suprise...
ALL my reasoning was wrong. As an example of what it is not here is a copy of the email I sent and the responses. Lets get this thing found. I want it so bad I think I can taste INFI.

James,

I have put my responses below. . . preceded by a row of *****

Good luck,

Jerry

P.S. Keep at it. . . you are close on a couple.

I was bold enough to hazard a couple of solutions. In the spirit of teamwork, here is what I have learned. Good luck guys.

Ed,

Wow!!! Close on one!!!!!

Good Luck!

Jerry

I believe that the x is a reference to the quarry site.

******* NO ********

I also have thought about where else the royalty would be. You would find the king and queen in a chess set. The king usually has a cross on the piece. It is a reference to one of the churches.

******* NO *******

The rhododendrons (sp?) can have lemon scent. Take the rhododendron trail north toward the church.

******Partly *********

Am I getting closer, or do I need to up the dosage on my antipsychotic?

In order to be king and queen, you have to be married. Take the rhodedendron trail north past the falls. Change into your dry socks. Continue north, not towards a church, but rather look for a sign or a trail toward's Howard's Chapel.
And then look for????

Please let us know here as I would share anyway. Being from Washington and all, there is little likelyhood that I will find myself in Alabama soon.

Ed T

Editted to add that Col. Milford Howard, the builder of the Chapel was a U.S. Representative. As close as we get to royalty.

****editted to reflect being wrong on both counts.

Only thing we brought back were some bird feathers and photos. I'm thinking you guys clear across the country are closer to solving it than I am. Tried pimping some intel from the park staff, per orders of the Park Superintendent no answers. Seems they have been getting phone calls and inquiries for a couple of days. Checked around the Azalea Cascades, noticed some fragrance in the air but no other clues seemed apparent. Did see deer in the area around the Boardwalk Trail which was surprising cause it was very heavily traveled. The Needle Eye Rock area is cool but pretty close to the road and had lots of folks around. Spent lots of time around the old quarry and along the white trail on the north side of the park. Super area to hike and just the kinda place I would stash something. Didn't get any time in on the eastern side around the Rhodendron Trails or the Laurel Falls/Creek trails on the south side. I had gotten hungup on the color clues being flower references but it might be trail colors. Tip-o-the-hat to Jerry for getting us motivated to go, it really is a nice Park. The small town of Mentone was a hoot also!

Clyde

Mentone Rocks!

Beautiful country isn't it? Glad you had fun. Keep at it!

Good luck!

Jerry

I didn't have time to write last night because I was too busy messing with my computer. It just about blew up on me. I had to deal with that. Anywhoooo...I went to Fort Payne. Yes indeedy. No, I didn't find the treasure, but I heard stories from all over the park about people there on a scavenger hunt. Park Rangers, attendants and what not were well informed of the hunt from all of the emails and the phone calls. I didn't get any help from them.

So, what did I learn on the trip? I'm really not sure. I'll take a stab though. "There's gold in them thar hills" Was that a clue. I think so. There's a trail between the campground and the store designated as the "gold" trail. There's a blue, red, and so on. Oh, and this wasn't the yellow trail. There was another trail that was marked as "yellow" This was the gold trail. Any significance there Jerry or just pure coincidence?

I also learned that they have several wildflowers that grow in the area that have a lemon scent. Arnica, Lemon Verbana (sp?) and Lemon Chiffon. Maybe that was the scent of the lemons....

The king and the queen in the garden? I heard Lookout Mountain referred to (and rightfully so) as a rock garden. From what I could tell, the two rocks forming the "needle's eye" seemed to be the biggest. Could that be the king and queen Jerry?

The royals wondering who they are? Couldn't figure that one except for the display including the Monarch butterfly in the nature center. Monarch? Not wondering who they are? Maybe going through the metamorphosis early in their lives? Is that it or am I way off the base here?

The queen with the huge floppy white hat just stumped me. No clue there. Hate to say it folks, but this is about as good as I could come up with. Maybe I just missed something when I was up there. Don't know.

Jerry, the little ditty about buying socks. I thought that was a clue for a moment. But, I was actually pondering it driving through town and just came upon this old building called "Socks It Is" which sells nothing but, you guessed it, socks. Was that what you meant Jerry? If so, what a tease!

But, even though I didn't find the treasure, I still had a great time and took some fantastic pictures. I visited DeSoto Falls, and I went down into Little River Canyon and got some shots of Little River Falls. Too bad it was summertime. The falls were not what they normally are. We had a little excitement while in the canyon. Some guy fell off of the rocks in one place and had a head injury. It took them about an hour to get him taken care of and out to a point where the rescue chopper could lift him out. I hate it for him. It was beautiful there this weekend. It was warm, probably in the high 80's, but it wasn't unbearable.

I think that's about every place that I went to besides town itself. I just spent a lot of time in the park.

So, Jerry, are we doomed to wait forever for someone to come along and get all of the clues right, or how does that work? When do we get another one? Do all of the clues have to be answered before you give in and give us a little more?

Just curious. I've got this weekend off too!!

cgd160, Ed T, G-Man, and the rest of you guys. . . . I can't answer publicly. . . If you want to email me your stuff I'd be glad to respond privately. Then, if you want, you can publicly post it.

Nuke on!

Jerry

Good work G-man!
I think I may be on to a few things. Will let you know. Received some bad news tonight, so I will be checking in and out.

Jerry,
Thanks for confirming that. I had kind of figured. I will be sending you some mail soon!

Don't let up guys, I can almost see the posted pictures now!

Was it the Azaleas that had the lemon scent?
There was a scent around the Azalea Cascade area and around the rock quarry. It wasn't as much lemon to me as it was a Spruce/Fir scent. Course it has been very dry in the area with little rainfall so that would have an effect.

I didn't cross paths with any gardens but I did run across some food plots on the northside of the park. It is a negative on the Lemon Verbane, I already asked Jerry. The sock reference might be to Ft. Payne, the "Hosiery Capital of the World". The royals lost, or maybe forgotten might be something from the early CCC days.

In the spirit of cooperation (or a nuclear dose of misdirection!) I was wondering if the color references are to trail colors also. The other references are to rock formations...course maybe not, I dunno.
Note of caution: They have done some timber harvesting on the north/east side and it cuts across some of the orange/white trails so be on the lookout for the surveyors tape in addition to the tree blazes. Good luck fellows!!

Clyde

G-Man, I don't think Jerry's sock comment was a clue. He was simply referring to the fact that Fort Payne is known as the "Sock capitol of the world".

I thought the lemon smell was lemon mint or lemon grass, but Jerry said no.

Does anyone else beside me find this to be a rather odd statement:

"Boy, those royals wonder who they are!"

This has to be a clue.

Did anyone hike near the Rock Bridge Church? Could you see the rock garden from there?
