good knife for a cop?

Spyderco Paramilitary 2 - any version - ergos and "lock-in grip" are superb.

i'd have to go with a sog flash 2 or maybe a sog aegis... there fairly lightweight, zytel handle, nice and grippy, good blade steel, fast assisted opening, great pocket clip, and they last forever... the only thing i cant stand about them is there is blade play with almost every sog, at least everyone i've ever played around with... but usually a pivot screw tightening will take care of that no problem!

A doughnut cutter! The only knife I don't carry!

Im also a cop - a state Ranger actually so I get out in the woods.

Some great comments. I agree that your knife should be very tough, an effective defensive tool that can be accessed quickly (why WOULDN'T you carry an additional lethal force option?) I agree that more than one knife is a good idea - especially for rural cops/Rangers. Many departments won't let you open carry a fixed blade.

So, I carry a small, stout, 5160 fixed blade I made on my boot (out of sight) and a Spyderco Chinook with a wave on my off-side top pocket. COPS: Many people strongly advise against wearing a knife clipped just under your sidearm. Think about your weapon retention DTs and how accessible it is to the suspect. I might loose my knife, but I get paid a fair amount and I want the cutting tools I use most to be high quality.

I just got a ZT 5160 and added a wave to her as well. Also carry off-side to my off-duty pistol. It would be my hands-down choice if I could only carry 1 knife. I haven't handled another folder that I'd be more comfortable actually fighting with than the 5160.

Edit: I actually forgot about it since i never use it (hopefully never will) I also carry a HideAway at my back on the inside of my inner belt.

Imo thin tips on cop knives aren't the issue. Dumbasses using their knives as screw drivers are the problem. I carry a spyderco millie and a SAK trekker. Many guys I work with have multi tools on their belt, I leave mine in my car. Axis lock is no problem either. If you're doing something with a knife that causes an axis lock to fail, you have bigger problems.

Im not a cop but i have a ZT301 Ranger green & its a very solidly built knife! I think it can do almost anything i ask of it! I also own a Kershaw Blur Tanto serrated blade which is also a great feeling knife. Just depends on how much money your wanting to spend. The Blur i got at Walmart & it opened my eyes to knife world & now cant get enough of them. Dont know if that helped or not but either way dont think you can go wrong!

the kershaw tremor is nice cheap sharp outta box same lifetime warenty kida heavy at 6 ounce but not too bad hack get 3 keep two as spares lol!

Spyderco endura wave. Great knife for a cop. It's light, tough, grips well inthe hand and has easy one hand opening with the wave from the pocket while using the pocket clip. Plain edge or other is your choice.

If you are a cop, why waste time on a knife? get a backup handgun like the M&P Shield single stack in 9mm or 40, for $379. and get a budget folder for small tasks, like a Skyline or Delica 4

Folding knife: stryder SMF or SNG

Otf switchblade: non flashy best durability-microtech scarab, style and better durability than microtech scarab would be piranha excalibur.

lol what kinda cop carries a Ummanzaan or whatever its called.
Para2 is good knife for light duty, the tip is too weak.

Get a CQC7, a new one goes around $130.

lol what kinda cop carries a Ummanzaan or whatever its called.

It's called an Umnumzaan.
And if I can get one with my lucrative part-time minimum wage earnings, I'm pretty sure a cop can afford one as well.

Bottom line, pick any quality knife that you like, and it'll work fine for regular "coply" duty.

As a cop, I would say that a multi-tool will be more useful to you than a knife. I currently carry a Gerber suspension plier-type multitool and a Emerson A100 on duty. I use the multi-tool at least twice as much as the knife.

A Cold Steel Large Voyager might suit you pretty well. It's a tough knife and it's also relatively cheap. You can thrash on it and it probably won't fail on you and if it does fail (don't count on it :D) you could always get a replacement without breaking the bank. If the Voyagers don't suit you, the other Cold Steel offerings might suit you better.

Also, a multi-tool would be very handy as a backup and for the extra functions they offer.

I carry a Sypderco Mariner in my left front pocket, this one is really only used for airbags and seatbelts. I carry a Hogue 3.5" in my left front pocket and a ZT 350 in between the buttons on my shirt. This one is mostly used for cutting citations off of the printer but can be easily grabbed in a hurry or a struggle. All of the knives can be opened one handed. I like to have one knife with in reach.

Stay away from gimmicks like seat belt cutters and glass breakers. You will have plenty of other tools to that will handle those jobs better.

I would take a look at the emerson prodcut line up. Great knives and great warranty.

Emerson actually makes a few knives espeacially for LEO applications. PUK and PSARK in particular.
