good knife for a cop?

Ok so if i was a cop, what would be the best knife for me? it needs to be tough. id be using it to do all kinds of things so it would have to have good grip too. what knife would be best? any zt or kershaws out there?
here's an old geezer's thoughts: i'm not a serviceman, and i've never had to pull a knife in a fight. but dicey situations i've been in are enough to fill a grandson's bedtime stories. and my opinion is: GET THE KNIFE YOU'RE MOST COMFORTABLE WITH. 'comfort' goes beyond good ergonomics, handling, and known reliability. it also has something to do with a weapon's mistique and warm familiarity. from all these you derive strenght and courage.

to best illustrate what i'm talking about, let me say i'm leaning towards "modern" utility and tactical knives these days. but after all the online shopping, testimonies, and sound forumer advise, i have settled on the knife i want to carry with me to the wilderness, my hideaway, or in any tense situation. this is a knife i'm well familiar with in terms of handling and performance. for that, i'm willing to trade light weight, one-hand opening, clipits, and steels that go past rc 60:

If you are a cop, why waste time on a knife? get a backup handgun like the M&P Shield single stack in 9mm or 40, for $379. and get a budget folder for small tasks, like a Skyline or Delica 4

Why waste time? Please. I am a cop, 35 years. Every rookie I teach on patrol is:Main weapon(Glock22), backup gun(Kahr pm9 for me), good folder(ZT350), utility device (Boker CopTool). They all have their uses in my line of work. You better be prepared for anything on the street. You can't go out with just a firearm anymore.

Most of the cops I know use sub $100 knives. The knives get sweaty wet, dropped in the mud/ gravel/ asphalt, and cops have the ability to destroy any gear in record time if they didn't loose it first. It's just not a job for an expensive knife. Their tac vests are different but what stays clipped in their uniform is usually a mid sized inexpensive folder.

I work with a lot of cops and the above statement is true....if not sub $75 dollar knives. I see a lot of Kershaws and Gerbers.....the cops I know don't make a lot of money.

Get a cheap knife. When I worked patrol the one thing I constantly used my knife for was opening gates by sliding the blade down at an angle to get the latch to open. Rarely did I actually use it to cut anything. Those Smith and Wesson assisted opening knives are perfect.

SOG Spec Elite 2 or Pentagon Elite 2

locks have been tested to 1000 lbs, can be opened 4 different ways, razor sharp, Spec Elite is an excellent piercer, Pentagon Elite has a shark tooth tip for piercing through metal, handle is very ample, end of handle is perfect as a pummel, bead blasted blade, vg10 steel.

edit: and a pocket clip

I'm not a LEO...is stabbing metal something LEOs find themselves doing a lot?

I would just warn against buying something clearly steeped in tacti-spec-ops-awesome marketing nonsense. "For professionals only!" kinda stuff.

A LEO will want something fairly compact, quick to deploy, tough as nails, with a lock that is highly unlikely to fail. It should be small enough not to scare the public, yet long enough for a 'last ditch' skirmish weapon. I would suggest a look at an American Lawman from Cold Steel, a Recon 1 from Cold Steel, a Spyderco Military or a Spyderco Endura, in no particular order.

Probably not but its nice to know you have a knife that has a tip that wont break, when you need it to perform, and i do not see anything in the SOG website that labels it "tacti-spec-ops-awesome marketing nonsense"

From SOG website:

"Since its debut, the Pentagon Elite series has achieved great popularity among the military and law enforcement community, as well as the general marketplace. The Pentagon Elite knives are impeccably balanced and feature ergonomic glass-reinforced nylon (GRN) handles, ambidextrous slotted thumb studs, machine screw construction, a low-reflective bead-blasted blade and clip, SOG’s Arc-Lock system, and a reversible military-style clip that enhances gripping. Spearheading the Pentagon Elite is a shark tooth tip that increases point strength."

The pocket clip is also the best one i have come across.

I never said SOG was "...steeped in tacti-spec-ops-awesome marketing nonsense... ." Though..."low-reflective blade" and "military-style clip"....

I go along with Infidel13 who suggested the Emerson CQC-7. Mine is tougher than ...gosh, I don't know, but it sure is tough. A good tanto blade, nice and thick, and could be used as a prybar if necessary, without breaking.
That's the easiest choice in my book, although Colt Steel Lawman seems to get around a lot also.

This is nice, to see something from a guy who's "there" every day of the week. Thanks.

CS Recon 1 tanto if you want tough and cheap.
Any of the ZT's would be fine I'm sure. Maybe an Endura with the emerson opener (wave) since its fast to deploy.

If you cant appreciate a non reflective blade and why its important thats a pretty good indication of your limited knowledge...have a nice day.

As far as the clip, its obvious you havent had experience with very many clipped knives, and how bad some of them suck.

No, he didn't. He just warned against ANYTHING that is...

Not just SOG.

What advantages does a non reflective blade have? I'd say Marcinek has wide experience with using knives and I would value advice from him.

No...I didn't...read the post.

Maybe you can explain to us why a LEO would need a nonreflective blade.

And I have experience with quite a few knives, folding and fixed. I'm not prone to blindly buying knives with crappy clips. The knives I own with functional clips...none claimed to be "military style." I do own "military style" shoelaces and and a "spec ops" banjo, however.

Have a nice day.

What about a benchmade 915 Triage?

There's no need to be rude.

+1 for ZT 350. I know a couple of military contractors that have used it overseas and came back as if it were in mint condition after the abuse.

ah i see - pigs stick together, you can always tell when a pig is a pig.

have a nice day.
