Not 100% sure about the titles...
Boondock saints (not the sequel): nice action with a cool (no, make that very cool) twist.
Delicatessen (same guys as Amelie, A very long engagement and City of the lost children if my memory serves me right): Twisted reality with an interesting (weird) plot.
Solaris (the original B/W not the US remake, also check out Ivan and Stalker from the same director): Might be a bit "artsy". Profound thoughts. One of the greatest scenes (ever) is taken from a car while travelling, no one says a word while it travels through tunnels and roads, and the trip feels like it takes forever - ballsy shot. It has that "Lawrence of Arabia" feel (the scene with the rider in the dunes) - you just have to wait to see what is going to happen and why.
Oldboy (funny, dramatic and creepy): A revenge movie. Gonin (nice one with a nasty Takeshi): Good, bad, cops, bandits. Battle royale (Takeshi again, a bit of splatter but well done), Tropa de elite (the first, I didn´t like the sequel as much): Nice plot.
If you think your family is a bit on the weird side, check out Ettore Scolas "Ugly, dirty and bad". So funny - I love the daycare center... and the familys love for their grandmother - once a month, when the pension gets collected at the post office.
Another "artsy" move is La dernier combat by Luc Besson. A world with mute humans - artsy enough for you? Like the movie Delicatessen mentioned before it gives a hint of what was in store for the future (Le grand bleu anyone?).
And if you have a weekend to indulge in movies and you like Sci-Fi. Go for a Doctor Who marathon, the most recent seasons five and six are good choices (damn those angels are creepy).
/C.
