Good movies?

Not 100% sure about the titles...

Boondock saints (not the sequel): nice action with a cool (no, make that very cool) twist.

Delicatessen (same guys as Amelie, A very long engagement and City of the lost children if my memory serves me right): Twisted reality with an interesting (weird) plot.

Solaris (the original B/W not the US remake, also check out Ivan and Stalker from the same director): Might be a bit "artsy". Profound thoughts. One of the greatest scenes (ever) is taken from a car while travelling, no one says a word while it travels through tunnels and roads, and the trip feels like it takes forever - ballsy shot. It has that "Lawrence of Arabia" feel (the scene with the rider in the dunes) - you just have to wait to see what is going to happen and why.

Oldboy (funny, dramatic and creepy): A revenge movie. Gonin (nice one with a nasty Takeshi): Good, bad, cops, bandits. Battle royale (Takeshi again, a bit of splatter but well done), Tropa de elite (the first, I didn´t like the sequel as much): Nice plot.

If you think your family is a bit on the weird side, check out Ettore Scolas "Ugly, dirty and bad". So funny - I love the daycare center... and the familys love for their grandmother - once a month, when the pension gets collected at the post office.

Another "artsy" move is La dernier combat by Luc Besson. A world with mute humans - artsy enough for you? Like the movie Delicatessen mentioned before it gives a hint of what was in store for the future (Le grand bleu anyone?).

And if you have a weekend to indulge in movies and you like Sci-Fi. Go for a Doctor Who marathon, the most recent seasons five and six are good choices (damn those angels are creepy).

/C.

Recent movies I just rented:

Get the Gringo, with Mel Gibson, was actually really good. One of his best movies in recent years (even before his initial psycho meltdown).

One that I just rented for the hell of it, was Lockout. Looked like it was going to be pretty bad. It wasn't the scifi event of the summer, but it was good. I wouldn't buy it, but yeah, go ahead and rent it or watch it on cable.

I liked Horrible Bosses, 50 50, Lord of War, and Man on Fire, Glory, and basically any Denzel Washington movie. XD

Yeah, Amelie is arguably one of the best "chick flicks" of the last 15 or so years. Makes you want to go out and try to find some neurotic, geeky French girlfriend.:D
Any good movies to recommend? I was reading the best knife fight in a movie thread and am going to the video rental place tomorrow and rather than spending twenty minutes staring at the shelves I would try and get some suggestions.

I loved The Man From Nowhere. The Raid Redemption is coming out Aug. 16. To make it so it is not all fighting I guess I'll go with A Perfect World.

City of Lost Children, the original Le Femme Nakita, and turning in my man card with Amele (good one for date night).

Leon the Proffesional, the original The Italian Job (michael Cain, Benny Hill), and along those lines the original Oceans 11 with Frank Sinatra

1. Blade Runner (1993 Director's Cut)
2. Stalker (Tarkovskiy)
3. Solaris (Tarkovskiy)
4. Alien
5. To Live And Die In L.A.

Only the first two are in order.

Colinz, you have impeccable taste!

All on top of my head. . .

1. Action/MA = +1 on Raid Redemption; the Indonesian "Ong Bak" so to speak (then again get Tony Jaa's Ong Bak films as well!)
2. Inspirational = October Sky (based on a true story)
3. Classic = Casablanca
4. Chick flick (best watched with significant other) = Serendipity
5. Horror = The Ring (Original Japanese version); anythin old school John Carpenter (Prince of Darkness, The Thing, The Fog)
6. Comedy = Mystery Men, Galaxy Quest
7. Guy flicks = Black Hawk Down, Last of the Mohicans, anything by Michael Mann

I Saw the Devil is a great Korean suspense film. It's a long movie and very intense, one of the best.

Another excellent Korean film is War of the Arrows.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out Oldboy, a well-know Korean cult favorite.

My favorite helicopter movie was the early-'80s movie Blue Thunder, starring Roy Scheider.

I love all kinds of movies, but I have a collection that falls predominantly outside of the American mainstream. I'm not really sure which others to mention, since everybody's tastes differ. On the foreign films, I always prefer the original language with English subtitles. After awhile, you don't even notice you're reading the subs anymore.

if you like science fiction then try watching the canceled tv series 'firefly'. they also made a movie called 'serenity'. good, corny 70s science fiction; 'logans run'. made when everyone thought the future was domed cities. also the original 'planet of the apes'. if youre watching charlton heston you might as well see 'the omega man'. 'mad max' might do you for more post-apocalypse. might also try the original 'tron' and 'the black hole'. 'attack the block' is a good british science fiction about aliens attacking a poor london neighborhood.
if you like fantsy movies you might try 'excalibur'. theres also some 80s movies like 'willow', 'labyrinth' and ;legend' although those last three are sort of pg-rated. labyrinth features david bowie, a teenage jennifer connelly and a bunch of muppet monsters.
i like nearly anything with humphrey bogart. especially 'the big sleep' and 'dark passage' which feature lauren bacall. 'the roaring twenties' is a good bogart movie that also stars james cagney. 'white heat' is a real classic james cagney gangster movie.
my favorite hong kong action movie is 'the killer' with chow yun fat.
try 'five deadly venoms' if you like old kung fu movies. also 'last hurrah for chivalry'.
if you like world war two movies then try 'tora!tora!tora!', 'a bridge too far' and 'the longest day'.
my all-time favorite comedy is 'raising arizona'.
if you like westerns then a good one is 'the man who shot liberty valance' with john wayne and jimmy stewart.
the new 'muppets' movie made in the last couple years is very good if you like the muppets.
'#1 ladies detective agency' is an oddball tv series starring singer jill scott set in botswana about a woman who sets up a private investigation service. my wife liked it very much. most of my above selections she did not like. lol

A good recent Thai martial arts movie is Chocolate, about an autistic girl who is a natural martial arts prodigy and gangsters.

My favorite old-school Kung fu movies include:
Disciples of Shaolin;
Shaolin Martial Arts (the 2nd set of training scenes in this film were clear inspirations for Kill Bill Vol. 2);
Heroes two;
Martial Club;
Knockabout;
The Prodigal Son;
The Kid From Kwangtung (this last film has some poor comedy scenes, but the action is outstanding, especially the villain played by Hwang Jang Lee, known as cinema's greatest kicker).

Favorite 1980s Hong Kong new wave action films:

Wheels on Meals;
Dragons Forever.

Some great westerns:
The Outlaw Josey Wales;
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Great horror:
Carrie (original 1976 version);
Suspiria (IMO, still one of the creepiest);
Dawn of the dead (original 1978 version).

Dubbed movies are sometimes unbearable. What is weird is to check out the difference of putting the voice over and subtitle and see the difference. But subtitles are infinitely better.

Bronson is another good movie about Englands most notorious prisoner

If you like quirky: Second Hand Lions and Big Fish were great for my wife and I.

Untouchables, True Romance, Grosse Pointe Blank, Man on Fire (+1), "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels", Hero, Once Upon a Time in the West, "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly", Shaun of the Dead, Army of Darkness, Miracle at St. Anna, The Dirty Dozen, Red Dawn, The Outsiders, Ten Little Indians, Rear Window, American History X, No Country for Old Men

BTW...+1 also for Firefly (and Serenity)...thoroughly enjoyed that series. if you have Netflix, they have it. also...really liked Sons of Anarchy. they have the first 3 seasons.

it's also almost time to rewatch the LOTR trilogy. bring on The Hobbit.

300!
That whole damn movie is a knife fight. :D
The Shining is my favorite movie. Not a whole lot of knives, but there is a famous scene with a door and an axe.....
Hmmmm.....
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The beginning
Devil (quite scary and edge-of-your-seat)
Cujo
The Book Of Eli :thumbup:
Inception

If you like quirky: Second Hand Lions and Big Fish were great for my wife and I.

You might like Worlds Fastest Indian. My gf thought she would hate it and after watching it she said it was really good.

Snatch is a good one about two detectives, a mobster, some blubbering thugs, an old russian who never dies, and a hitman all trying to get some diamonds. Jason Statham, Brad Pitt as a Gypsy boxer, can't remember the others.
