Good serrated folder for hard use?

There's plenty of people who are quite disappointed with serrated h1. It's been well documented. Most people who defend it have never used it and just repeat what has been said over and over.
Most people do not share your experience or opinion. And the old, "you don't use your knives" is a poor excuse for the overwhelming majority here not agreeing with you.

H1 is not heat treated in the traditional way. The steel is work hardened in the manufacturing and processing of blades. Edge retention in the plain edge config would be about the steels that you listed. It does sharpen easily, and gets very sharp. In the serrated config, it will stay sharper longer than anything we've tested to date.

That's a quote from Sal Glesser himself about serrated H1. One of the few knife folks I hesitate to argue with.

Exactly. Not only do I trust my own experience with h1, I also trust what spyderco and sal say about it.

I use it and am not disappointed. It's entirely palonej palonej 's fault I will add.

Maybe after all the hype I was surprised to see it completely trashed after a day at work.

You're right I totally skipped that part of the ask! I thought we we cutting fibrous plants here!

Never tried a serrated H1 salt but am just curious: if it is hardened at 68hrc as claimed, won't the teeth be prone to chipping?

Just remember that the knife that is chosen WILL be cutting dirt and potentially hitting hard material like rocks in tree or shrub balls. That's why you want good and cheap. I want one of the fully serrated Salt Series knives, but I wouldn't use it for this purpose unless it was an emergency. I know they are good knives as people rave about them.

Another excellent point, and if that's the case, the Byrd Caracara serrated is an awesome choice. I use a CaraCara Rescue as my dedicated boating knife (freshwater).
Cheap enough that if I falls out of my pocket and I lose it, I won't be heartbroken.

Just a thought. If you are doing a lot of sawing, may be you should look into a small folding saw? Silky pocketboy 130 for example. You can have it for $30 more or less.

It is arguable as to whether or not H1 is a steel. It certainly will not behave in the way you think a steel blade would. The H1 Pacific Salt would be my choice for this kind of work and I would use it and never worry about it...at all.

I agree that H1 behaves differently...at least differently than any steel I've ever used. But it IS a steel. Put a magnet to it and the magnet will 'stick' to it like any other steel.

Several years ago, someone posted that H1 is actually a 'glass', which is absurd.

After some thought I've come to the conclusion that serrated blades aren't very good for true hard use. The teeth are very susceptible to chipping, rolling and really don't hold up as well as a conventional blades. I still view h1 steel the same thought.

How about mora rope knife?

Found mine from discount bin for 3eur but you might have to spend ten(!) for it.
Good rubbery grip with guard that wont slip your hand. I have mine as dedicated work knife at my working place.
