Goodbye my friend....

@OP - nice outcome. I'm late to this thread, but my advice would have been to contact them, even though you weren't looking for a warranty claim. I was thinking that it would be interesting to see how they responded, and if they would be interested enough to have you send in the knife for analysis.
Well, your outcome has prompted me to add an F1 to my kit. I'm pretty new to the world of BF, but have been reading a fair bit, and was considering an F1; you're experience has clinched it for me. Now, I just have to save up the required coinage.
Good news for you! You get a replacement, and still get to buy a new knife!
Cheers

At some point I was concerned that I am damaging the good name of Fallkniven, although it was never my intention. And even though it was defective, this knife outlasted many of my previous ones.

As I said, this thread was just to have some fun, read comments, see some knife porn etc.

Thank you for your good words. If you are active in the outdoors, I am sure the F1 will be to your liking.

George

Congrats on the resolution -- that's great news -- and great customer service!
Enjoy the new knife!

Good to hear that, George. I always shake my head, when some people complain about the "limited" 2 year warranty that Fallkniven offers. I didnt doubt for a second, they'd take care of knife if it was defective, and i was proved right. Fallkniven makes strong dependable cutting tools and even the best company can put out a lemon every now and then.

To Eric and Peter: Good on you taking care of this matter. And I really hope youll consider starting a Fallkniven subforum here on Bladeforums.

I suspect the problem might be that you where using a flat ground, stainless steel, laminated blade in freezing conditions on hardwood. You have to remember that steel behaves differently at -14c than it would at room temperature, the steel becomes more brittle and stress fractures form more quickly and easily.

Regardless, I hope you have better luck in the future regardless of your next knife choice.

Excellent result for you, excellent service by Falkniven, and a nice report to close out the topic - thanks!

If anything, I'd say this thread has bolstered the good name/reputation of Fallkniven. I am very impressed by the company's concern for both you, the customer, and the quality of their product. Top notch, in my book!

+1 I couldn't agree more. I have been on the fence about getting one but this has convinced me to get one. Thanks

You are not the first one to mention this. So maybe I should take it under serious consideration. I didn't know that stainless steel is inferior to carbon as a general rule when it comes to strength, thought only it had to do with sharpness. However, keep in mind that the knife had defects, so a proper one could probably deliver without a sweat. Just saying...

Just my $0.02 worth regarding warranties.

A lifetime no-quibble warranty is no guarantee your knife won't break. All it guarantees is you'll get a replacement.
It's like when precision parts get outsourced to more eastern countries, occasionally you get a box of 200 rather than the 100 you ordered. When you ask why they sent double the reply is "Because we knew you specified +/- 3 microns, we cannot guarantee that precision so we sent double on the basis that half of them will be right. If you need any more we'll be happy to supply".
If I was making Mora's and selling them at Fallkniven prices, I'd offer no-quibble warranty as well. The increased volume from the punters and the fact that most of my customer base aren't likely to ever put the knife through its paces means I gain anyway. Even if I replace the knife 10 times, I'm still ahead because that customer will tell his friends about the really great warranty and they'll buy one too.
Toyota has some cars where you can't access the engine without completely stripping the bodywork. They have a little bay for checking and topping up oil & water, that's it. When asked why they did this, "isn't it a bit short-sighted?" The reply was "Our engines never go wrong". This philosophy is also the reason why you sometimes have to wait 3 months for certain spare parts to come from Japan, because they "never break".
Different manufacturers have different philosophies, and sometimes you don't know the reasons behind certain decisions. If you could buy a car where every part could be changed without lying underneath the car, would you think, "clever engineering they really care about the people who have to work on it"? Or would you think " They expect everything to fail on this car and want to minimise the time spent in the garage by making it all really easy to replace"?
Without insight into those decisions, we'll never know for sure.
Mora makes great knives, but to cover a full range of bushcraft tasks including a lot of battoning I wouldn't like to rely taking just one with me. I'd be happy with my falkie though.

Decided to 'put my money where my mouth is' and ordered up my first Fallkniven... the U2 folder. I have full confidence in the company, especially after reading this very thread.

Just arrived today.

Included in the box, a fallkniven sticker....and 5 FALLKNIVEN BAND-AIDS!!!! lol

Hope this is a standard policy and there is not a hidden message from mr. Hjortberger regarding my knife skills :P

Go for it. We need to convince them to start a subforum on here. It would be good for the community. ;)
