Got a Buck 119 from my dad, from vietnam era?

My mistake DM, I was always under the impression that the hilt was just the portion of the handle that protected your hand. Thanks for the correction in terminolgy...

Think nothing of it. I'm checking and I think I miss read on these Group 3 knives. Ok, post #35 looks better and post #40 looks good . DM

Buck's Group 2 1973-1980 is what we are talking about. Which is exactly what I was talking about "the total number of spacers" . The hilt is not the finger guard, its the total handle. So, to not confuse lets use the terms finger guard and pommel which is where these spacers are . The models I stated that have this number of spacers 2 & 2 (2 micarta spacers in the finger guard and 2 micarta spacers in the pommel) which is exactly what I was saying. From Joe's writing these models do exist in this configuration (2&2) with up right 3 line stamp. I have a seen a 119 and 120 with this spacer pattern and I have a witness, Skyhorse at the Nov. Las Cruces Gun and Knife Show. I own a 121 and 103 with this pattern. I may have others I'll have to check. DM

David:

I am fascinated that you have seen a 120 and a 119 with the 4 spacers. I, too, have a few 3 liners with 4 spacers but they are the 121 and 105. In my prior posts I was referring only to the 120. Now you have a 103. That suggests rather clearly that the 4 spacers [thanks, DM] probably exist in the entire line of 100 series 1973 BUCKs. With you having seen a 120 and a 119, that leaves only the 102 and the 118.

Yes, 1973 Bucks Group 2. In your 2nd sentence you wrote 4 liners, I think you mean 4 spacers. I'm checking for one of these. DM

Ok, I've checked every model, except a few I couldn't find and I have two more with this spacing configuration. A model 105 and another 121 both have the 2&2 micarta spacers in the finger guard and pommel. Joe noted of the Group 3 models he "had only seen the 119, 120, 121 and 118 in this configuration and it is likely that the other models skipped this and went straight to the next version." (these are the 1&2 models) The models we're talking about are the Group 2 models. I think all these have the 2&2 spacers. So, if someone has a 3 line upright stamped 102 or 118 with 4 micarta spacers (2 in the pommel and 2 in the finger guard) please let us know as this is a item of interest. Thanks, DM

Well, David, these are bad pictures. But istn't the 118 one of the knives you want to see?
And the 102 you may find in the third photo.

Best,
Haebbie

Haebbie, Yes, those are the ones . Thank you very much. I noticed you have a 103 as well with this spacer configuration. Thats all of them! I believe the only 100 series fixed blades that were NOT offered with this spacer configuration was the 122, 124 & 107. Well, these models didn't have spacers incorporated into their finger guards. Man, a 2 line 124! You have some nice Buck models. DM

Now all we need are pictures of the 119 and the 120. presumably DM has pics of the 121 and the 105. Haebbie has provided pics of the 103, 102 and the 118. Someone here must have a 4 spacered 119 and a 120 to complete the set.

David: here are all the 2 line 124s through 1971, the last year that they were made. I have excluded the serrated versions from this display.

May be that I have the 119 you search.
But the knive is well packed in Boxes, After the moving in the last year
I don't have the space for showing my beauties.

Best,
Haebbie

Tele, Man those are handsome 124's. No, I don't have a picture of my 105 & 121--2&2 spacers but I could make one should this be required. DM

The 119 and 120 are out there, like I said before but they are hard to come buy. I know a couple of guys that have them. They won't post here though.

Welcome, Beta. What he's meaning is there have been articles written on Vietnam knives that said the ones, 'Seals and Special Forces carried' were not stamped or had the stamp filed off. Because should they be captured or were studied as they were infiltrating the knife stamping could compromise this effort . Thus, endangering their lives. Some of these articles appear in Tatical Knives from time to time. DM

This wasnt used in vietnam, the story was told to me that it was bought in japan on the way back from vietnam. so it was a civilian purchase

Sounds a little far fetched, Dave. The enemy was not so stupid they could not ID an American knife like the 119--stamp or no stamp.

Your life was already extremely endangered.

Not like you could pretend to be a Swiss tourist who took a wrong turn in the jungle wearing a big knife with the stamp filed off.

;)
