Gransfors Bruks vs. Wetterlings?

I absolutely believe they would. I've had sheaths damaged in shipment (the blade cut through the rivets because the axe wasn't packed snugly enough and bounced around in the box) and GB sent me a new sheath right away, no charge. I think their phone number is somewhere on the www.gransfors.com website.

did you call GB? Just wondering if thatd be $$$ because i have Wetterlings axes and ive been wanting to call them.

Where did you get a 19" Wetterlings for $39?

I grabbed one from Smoky mountain but they are out of stock. Take a look at the Snow & Neally Kindling axe as well. But honestly a 19" is too big for one handed use and slightly too small for two-handed use..IMHO. Someone else told me that here and I feel they pretty right on. For around the house do at least a 24" This is a pretty nice one and pretty easy to get:

The extra length will make things easier and the weight isnt as big of a difference as you think.

I'd been waiting for them to come back in for close to a year!:D

I grabbed a 19" (Waited 9 months on it) and was eye balling a 32" as well. Smokey seemed to have had these for a little while. I hate how long it takes to get one. I was considering a S&N 30" 3.5lb but I have zero experience with them and do not know how well it will chop compared to the wetterlings. I believe they are lesser quality but since I have no experience I cant judge. I dont even know what the hardness is or if they come razor sharp or not. With the wetterlings the prices are all over the map on these. Knifecenter is expensive and some of the other shops are as well. Many place have them but some for almost double smokey price.

I ordered the 32 this AM. Wasnt too bad...75 bucks. Smokey was out of them for 59. I couldnt find it cheaper. I waited too long...smokey had them last week and I just waited...DAMN IT!

I am looking around for a GB mini hatchet. I've read many good reviews and have decided to spring for it. The cheapest I have seen has been around 150. Where would I find the best price? I here stories of people getting them for 100. But I can't find anything like that anywhere. Seems like a wonderful tool and I am excited about getting it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any reason why you dont want to do a wetterlings? The GB are really expensive, good but expensive! The Wildlife or Small Axe are under 70 bucks! Yeah the Small Axe is more weight but it is 55 bucks and has a razor sharp edge on that hand forged head!

You might want to check out the Husqvarna line of axes too, I believe I read they are made by Wetterlings and they look very similar but I dont know that for a fact. I purchased this husqvarna hatchet off of ebay for $40 bucks, the specs looks pretty similar to the Gransfor mini hatchet at close to 1/4 the price. It's pretty nice and came with a leather sheath. Leaves you with enough money for another larger axe from Wetterlings, just a thought. Trevor~

Totally agree

Understand about the Wetterlings. They sound great, but I am still planning to go with the Gransfors. I am willing to spend the money on a hatchet I will probably have for a very long time. I do a lot of camping and fishing and will use this well. The GB seems like a great hatchet and they are custom made to the best of my knowledge. I have a nice knife collection and recently I have been trading or selling quantity for quality, trying to find one nice knife for each use. (fishing, camping, construction, ect.) It seems like I would just buy the nice one in the long run anyway. (My logic for owning a Sebenza.)

Should I be considering the Wetterlings though? You guys seem to like it. What do you think?

Yes you should strongly consider Wetterlings, GB bought Wetterlings a short time ago. They are both Swedish companies. Very similar processes. Both Heads are Hand Forged in nearly the exact same way. Same hardness, both razor sharp edges, both made in just about the same manor. Also both are swedish. The GBs are finished a little better but from a use, performance, and which one will last longer. Both are dead equal. Both use hickory handles but the GB will be finished nicer this to me do not justify more than double the cost. GB do seems to typically have a narrower head and will stick more then the Wetterlings (not all but most). Also Husqvarna are wetterlings as well. They are also awesome. I put these 3 in a league by themselves. You will never hear anyone knock them. Also with the money you will spend you can get (2) Wetterlings or (2) Husqvarna. Trust me they are all made to last a lifetime. And you will not be disappointed. Berland (my local store) carries the GBs and I considered it till I got my first Wetterlings. The difference wasnt as dramatic as I thought. I was glad I save the money for I have a Long Hunting and a Swedish 32" for the price of one Small Forest Axe from GB.

This guy puts them to the test. This is a good review and read. In the end he picks the Wetterlings. It performed better.

As someone who would be doing lot of walking around with my gear, weight is an issue. Seems the Small Axe is substantially heavier. 11 oz. for the GB versus 24 oz.. More than double.

Des the Wetterlings feel heavy on your belt? At 11 oz. it must be like the GB is not even there.

You make some great points. Did not realize the Wetterlings were handmade.

Just as a FYI, the husqvarna hatchet I linked to his hand forged as well. It's the perfect pack hatcket. imo.Trevor~

Not sure on the weight. It really depends what you are going to do with it. Weight is a good bad issue. Too light and it will not be very good or at least extremely limited. Plus the length is another huge factor. I have not used these small hatchets yet. But my take is this, at just over 10" a hatchet that weights 11oz i going to have an extremely limited application or at least it would seem. I could be completely wrong on this. But, even one that weights 2x that, at that length it will only be useable for somethings. But more weight in the head will make things easier...chopping and hammering, pounding...etc. I could be off but I would soon carry a bigger knife. 7"+. More uses. I think it would be far more versatile. I would be curious how an A2 vs Mini hatch for chopping would compare even an A1 Fallkniven. This is Apples to oranges but batoning is like splitting, chopping is chopping....so the uses do overlap and can be achieved by both without much sacrifice.

You seem like weight is a big factor. I just think at such a small size for a hatch and light weight you amount of practical use is very low. I could be off because my camping axe is 19" and it is pretty good for a lot of stuff but once again limited so I still carry an A1 and a folding saw (Bahco). To be honest I could skip the Axe on many of my trips. I have taken a Sven Saw and my A1 and never missed the weight and the limited use of the axe but the 19" is capable of a lot. If every oz counts I would re-evaluate the Hatchet. It size and weight limit its use compared to something else that you could carry that could do a very similar task. Just my $0.02, I might be off so feel free to make change. HA

I carry a smaller fixed blade (Busse game warden) and one of those pocket chain saws. I am buying the hatchet out of necessity. The saw is great for bigger stuff, but the hatchet is perfect for small diameter kindling. Too big for the knife, too small for the saw. Fills a great void.

Remember I would only be using it for probably 4 " max. What Ive read, the Gb goes through that like butter. Saw would too, but is pain for cutting up a lot of firewood, as it works better on one big piece.

Not a big fan of carrying a monster knife in the woods. Unless there are Zombies around ...
