Cell Pic Snowy Overcast Outside

Paging Johnny TwoShoes :)

I finally broke down and got my 71 REAL deep in food prep. It was covered. For a while. Gotta say, now it won't be so annoying keeping it shiny.

An observation on the liners, though they are low carbon, they are not taking hardly any patina.

I have to wonder how low carbon :)

That looks beautiful Kevin.
The blade looks like it's enjoying all the food prep, it's starting to get that feel to it I bet. My blade is enjoying all the work I've thrown it's way, it has a little bit more of a patina going.

The liners on mine shine like Stainless Steel blades, they are just as good as the day I got them. The spring on the other hand has started to get that real light patina going. I really have enjoyed this knife immensely, I think that it was a great choice for Mike when picking a pattern to offer at a discount price. I just hope they can get to that discount point. I would pay the money for this knife again, it just feels great.

I love comparing our #71s, especially since they are walking through different lives. I'm hoping to get some skinning done with this knife, but the weather has turned and I don't plan on going out for a while.

Yours is looking good too. Sounds like we are coming up with the same thing on the liners. I have been using mine everyday, but not on anything that would give it a patina. The bad part is my oils in my hands will really go after carbon steel if it doesn't stay oiled. It was getting fingerprint etches and crud, so I said time to put it on food prep duty. As soon as i do that I don't stop, so it ends up being the knife passed around at bull roasts and picnics and such. Nice not to worry so much with a patina.

Yes, the feel of the patina is an even better reason though, your right. Tons of grip and no reason to use that nail nick unless you feel like it.

If they made this run again even at the same price I would find a way to order about 4 of them for back up and family and friends. Much less discounted. But, I just wanted to update you on mine and let you see what You have to look forward to. Looks great with a patina getting started IMO :)

Enjoy your 71 Johnny.

There you two go posting nice pic's of this knife again! Stuck over here as the dealer doesn't ship to the UK!

Could the liners be stainless? The liners on my Fruitport don't patina either. I read on a thread that it may be better to have stainless liners against carbon steel to prevent them bonding? Sound familiar or have I got up too early;)

Sam

I've been watching this thread, and I'm still wondering about the liners. Thinking they are stainless, especially in light of the comments mentioning lack of patina. The identification of the steel as '125 low carbon cold rolled' sort of baffles me. Haven't been able to find any reference to this steel type anywhere in my web searches. 'Low carbon', in itself, doesn't clarify whether it's stainless or not. The chromium content is the mystery which would clear that up. Many or most of the 300-series stainless steels, which are very often used for liners/bolsters in many knives, are also classified as 'low carbon', but have huge amounts of chromium (18-20%). That's extreme rust-resistance.

Sam, not trying to make you feel left out! From what I understand, Mike did a great job getting this one put together for the first run, and it sounds like they are working out details to try for another. IDK exactly :) Still Hopeful.

David, I was hoping someone more knowledgeable on steel composition would chime in. I couldn't find much either. All I can say is it does not seem to take a patina.

Getting the tooling in place and the black delrin on order.... I'm guessing a month out.
They will be a little more refined as tooling will have closer tolerances than pulling the factory test together.

All the same materials, just permanent tooling.

That sounds like AWESOME news to me Mike! Thanks for putting this one together! No easy task.

Will there be anymore orange ones? I would to get one of those.

We got a lot of snow today so it was a perfect afternoon to enjoy a pocket knife. The edge on my Bull Nose is really holding up, it's tackled some cardboard cutting and food prep with ease. I look forward to some serious cutting test this spring. I suggest you guys who like a sod buster and who don't already have a Bull Nose to go get one when they are available next month. These knives are a different breed than your #73s, they really do feel different. This is the closest I have been to the "one" in a while and I'm really shocked by this. Not my all time favorite blade, I like other frames better, I'm usually a two blade guy, or a single blade locker, but this knife does it for me.

I think GEC did something to this batch of knives, they just seem all too awesome.

I agree Johnny. Anyone that wants a sodbuster, these things are sweet. Get in on them. They did do something special to this run, I agree. They are NOT the 73. Such a different feel in hand, in use, and walk and talk.

Great shots Johnny, it snowed over night here too. Lots of sleet and rain though making it all a frozen mess.

Still very beautiful.

Where can I find one of these?

Knifeswapper, AKA Mike Latham, is a BF dealer member. Therefore, I will let Mike do the talking:

GEC did a factory test run of these for us and they are long gone. We are looking into a way to produce these at a price ($50 or less) that is a good value to our customers. If we can accomplish our goal I will post a schedule on our forum. The most likely next handle will be black delrin; if this is something you want to reserve you can CLICK THIS to send me an email that will be kept in the event the project comes to fruition you will be one of the first to place an order on them. Please don't email asking for updates, as they will be supplied at the New Products board at the above forum link. Many thanks for your interest.
Update: Black is in the works!!
