Great Eastern Cutlery Missouri Trader #42

You guys are the best! Always cheering me up and making me laugh :)

Roland, I had wondered how much difference there really can be in the grinds.

Well, since Ed is on me for pics I got a start :D

Just a couple point and shoot shots but one comparison with my other EDC knives.

Another of the knife

Im going to hold off until I get a chance to take my camera out :)

I have it in my pocket and will continue to for a good while unless something odd happens. Initial impressions would be I can't notice my 85 but the 42 is occasionally reminding me of its presence in my pocket.

The handle is about 1/2" thick and the blade is about 3 1/4" measured from the plunge line.

I will get more pics and thanks guys for making my day :)

Only one way that knife could be any sweeter Kevin. Gotta put that black patina on it

I would also be very interested in a comparison to a #72 lockback. I have the little brother of your knife the #72 in ebony and I wonder if there is a significant difference in the feel of the two knives in hand and pocket.

Thanks! A patina is going to be a little slower than normal since I got some kitchen knives, but it will end up with one :)

I don't own a 72 but I have handled a few. I can't provide a comparison pic but I would say from memory this is a little larger and a little heavier. Nothing scientific at all.

It's 6:20 AM here and were headed out the door to Redding, CA (150) miles away for Drs. appointments today so, hopefully you'll have some great pictures up when we get back tonight. I have held off ordering/buying this knife because of the length (4 1/4") which will be a pocketfull. Hopefully, you'll carry this knife with you today and give us your impression on whether it will make a good pocket EDC or make a good sheath EDC.

From the looks of it, the size and most importantly, the thickness is similar to the (shaking my head in disbelief) discontinued Buck 500 Duke.

Buck 500 Duke by Pinnah, on Flickr

Here's my take on the Duke.... All pocket carry issues are highly personal, depending a great deal on one's prefs and the type of clothes one wears. I generally wear baggy carpenters jeans, but occasionally wear dressier, closer fitting dress slacks (can one call Dickie's chinos dress slacks?) Anyway, I find that the flat profile of the Duke matters more to me than it's length or weight.

I have an Ulster Camper/BSA knife. I notice it more in my pocket than my Duke, largely because of the girth and square-ish profile of the slip joint. In fact, I'm bother by my Camillus Peanut/Serpentine jack for the same reason. In contrast, the flat profile of the Duke just slides right in the pocket and moves well as it rides there, sort of like a big canoe. It's also the easiest knife I have for sliding out in the car or when crossing my legs at church. Ka-THUNK! Sort of makes me wish for wooden pews, but I digress.

Another contrast, occasionally I carry my Buck 112. Same length as the 500 but totally different, both in terms of weight but more importantly, the 112 has the big blocky square profile.

The Duke is more weight and length than my shorter Buck 501-sized Schrade 5OT. That is easily among my most easily carried knives, even more so than my super light Opinels.

I like carrying my Duke and could see carrying this new GEC based on that, but I don't mind a bit of weight in my pocket so long as it moves well.

Well, I'm runnin down the road
Tryin to lighten my load
I've got seven knives on my mind
Now I'm standin on a corner
In Blade Inforumsa
Look over and its a fine site to see
Its another GEC in a flat-bed Ford
And its got a hold on me

Oh-oh... I'm so in trouble.

Man... I just never log on to this site. Never. Looks like some Bucks are going to get sold off.

You know, the darn shame for Buck is that there are folks (some on this site) making thinned out 112s and filling the void left by the loss of the Duke and Buck knows this. Then, here you go, GEC comes and picks up what should have been Bucks to fill and knocks it out of the park. Shame on Buck. Kudos to GEC.

Any chance you could reshoot that with the 42, 72 and 5OT?

Thanks Guys :)

Pinnah,

I would have to borrow a friends 72 to get it in a shot. Its possible, but I can't make any promises.

I have no idea but anyone that does please feel free to post whatever in this thread. The more info the better IMHO.

Thanks Trand! Its the proto. I have only had one other proto in the 23 pattern. It was my only option sticking with the dealer I am loyal to.

I wondered if the grind was so awesome due to it being the proto?

Thoughts?

I haven't gotten a proto yet so I'm not sure... I hope the answer is 'no' and they are all just as awesome!!

Thats what I am hoping for too! I could see recommending these to a few friends, and the guys here on the forum, and I would never want them to end up with something different.

Comment for Ed,

Hope your trip was safe :)

After today I can say it is no different than having a 73 in my pocket. Nothing like a 23, which by the dimensions on paper seems odd.
