Great Eastern Cutlery

If that was the style they wanted, then it should be the same on both sides of the knife. I've 2 knives and it ranges from non-existant to very deep. Not consistant results at all.

well thats not good is it-

I'd write an email or letter to Great Eastern & let them know what you think.
Maybe even cut & paste from here, (but that might be too intense for
starters).

I'd like to see if they stand behind their product; - accept it back and send
you a different one.

One you're really pleased to own.

I sent an email asking about fixing the problems with this knife & was told "We have no knife to replace it with. It is fine with me if you send it back I have people on a list waiting to buy it for alot more money"

What a freakin answer

I'd send it back - after a few more of those "waiting list" people
see it up close and send theirs back too, the news will get out

If Great Eastern doesn't take care of its customers it soon won't have any

Wow, that's just an awful reply for any business to come back with, let alone one that is trying to make a name for themselves.

Won't be seeing any business from me anytime soon.

That is not a good reply for a new knife company or even a dealer selling their products. Do they even have a customer service phone available?

Hope someone at GEC gets to read these posts, they need to remedy these problems or they will become Gone South Cutlery.

Well, thank you to those who did purchase one of these things. At least you performed a service for the rest of us.

Jigging running into the bolsters? Ridiculous. That email response? Totally and completely unforgivable.

I recently purchased a new pistol based (quite a bit) on a very positive interaction with the maker's Tech Support people. That's turned into a $500 sale due to good customer management. I wonder how many thousands of dollars GEC has now lost due to this. Idiots.

I spoke on the phone with Bill Howard of Great Eastern this morning and I am sending the knives back to him for repair, if they can. He told me that if a customer has a complaint, he's usually correct. So, I got a different response by calling to the top. I just used the number on the tube the knives came in and was able to talk to him. I don't know what the rules are for posting to other forums, but I thought I should show some pictures of the knives I received, you may think my grading from an earlier post is generous.

http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_forum/viewtopic.php?t=3507 This is a long post and quite informative. Click on the pictures on this site to get a better view of what I can see. My apologies if I'm crossing the line by posting this link.

However, Bill Howard said Great Eastern is willing to work with me. By my count 2 blades need to be replaced. Please feel free to disagree or agree. QC seems to be severely lacking. The pictures in this forum are titled and self explanitory.

I sent a copy of my evaluation with pictures as well as a link to the site above to Bill Howard. A new company needs constructive feedback in a neutral tone, which I hope I did. It's far more effective that way. I will keep everyone updated if there is an interest.

I do not believe the knives that I recieved represent the standard quality of Great Eastern Cutlery, but rather an anomaly, 1 guy getting worst case in fit and finish on 2 knives.

If they are willing to work with me, that's a step in the right direction and shows that they are being responsible.

Just to clarify: Did this response come from GEC itself, or from the dealer you bought the knife through?

What a shame. I was waiting to hear about them and looking forward to maybe buying to support a new US company - I can count 4-5 others just on this thread that seemed to be chomping at the bit to get one that are backing off. I had even emailed Bill Horn at Cumberland to see if he was already sold out a few weeks ago before they first arrived. Glad I waited too.

It wouldn't have been out of the question for the top guy and owner to take a few days and check every knife personally of his first shipments. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and they seem to have totally blown it. So quick and easy to lose the huge interest that had been generated but it will literally take years to get back to square one - if they ever do.

the first ones should be flawless-and the first try at customer service tells me i wont buy another no matter how this is resolved-just not a good way to treat your customers-

i wonder how well ill be taken care of if my knife isnt any better than his,i dont want to find out-

I know we have heard about the problems associated with first offerings from GEC, I understand also that GEC need to know of problematic issues with what they are producing, and the first runs should pobably be error free, has anyone had the feeling though, that because these knives are the first offerings from a new company they are wanted as collectors pieces regardless of flaws. Now if only I could get my hands on a Amber Horse Cut No 23 cannot find one anywhere, help if you can.
Thanks

a collector piece from a first offering shouldnt be flawed-
makes me wonder if the money is short so the rushed out some knives to get the payroll made or something-

Hey, Microsoft produces crap and people run right out to buy it... Could be a new business model! I wonder if the first versions of Vista (or Win95/NT/98/Me/2k/XP) are "collectors items" these days?

The email I received came from the sales manager of GEC.
And I've saved all my correspondence with them.

Just to clairfy I'm not out to impugn GEC's name, I to would love to see an American Co. thrive. 98% of all knives I have are American made. And I'm only 1 collector, they have bigger fish to fry. I think most eveyone here knows this Co. heritage & would LOVE to see them succeed. But I prepaid for the 1st 3 knives (2 months ago) & I expect to get what I paid for. Just seems like good business practice to me.
