Grimsmo Norseman, what's the deal? and others...

I’m in for both lotteries and will pull the trigger IF I get the call and IF the knife is under $1K CDN ($700-ish USD).

Grimsmo is less than an hour from my office and they do make nice knives. Are they overpriced? $700 for a few pieces of machined metal can be considered overpriced by many, but I would pay the extra $$$ to buy from a local company that makes great knives that are fairly rare.

To each their own.

I thought they were like $950 each now...

I assumed that the prices listed at Grimsmo are CAD, meaning the cheapest knife they make is around $750 USD plus shipping. I'm not sure if they collect any sales tax or not.

That’s what I am thinking. If that is the case, I’m interested as a CRK or Hinderer with a couple of bells and whistles is within a couple hundred bucks in Canada currently.

They do come up all fancy smancy for up to $1750 from time to time. That’s not my thing...

Well, the posted price in CAD isn't the end of it. Ontario has a fairly high sales tax, I think 13%? Add that in and probably another $30-40 CAD shipping and the cheapest Grimsmo is going to lay in at around $850-870 USD.

No thanks.

From a personal standpoint, I don't think I'd be in for one even if they sold in their natural competitive range of $400-500 USD. In my opinion the Norseman is butt-ugly with a blade that's the knife-world equivalent of a platypus and the Rask is just boring.

The one I won was 975usd and I had to pay tax which made the total over 1000usd. Which sucks but I already had that in my PayPal saved so no real issue. They haven't sent any tracking info yet but that's to be expected because I got the email Thursday night just before the long weekend

Which model did you get and how pimped was it? Maybe the prices quoted on the website are in USD...

I would say the average price of a Norseman new from Grimsmo is ~$800 USD which isn't too bad I think it is still too steep. I think they are more in line at a base line price of ~$450 for the Rask and ~$500 for the Norseman then anodizing, inlays, damascus vs ss, finishing options, etc would be the stuff to bring it up into the $800-$1k range. I do wish they would find a slightly more premium steel to work with but I don't know much about what all is available in Canada to suggest anything specific.

so...you "won" (paid) over 1K$ for a knife which you don't even like the color of the scales?

so they will change the color for you? I'm just trying to wrap my head around the idea of paying so much for a knife that is not 100% to your liking.

No idea never asked, but I always wanted to try one and didn't want to buy from secondary market with quite a bit of them state side and with or cbsa mess right now. I know someone that has an anodizing set up. He's done a few things for me before so should i acually feel like having the color changed I'd just send it to him. beside the color doesn't really bother me I'd just prefer purple. many companies at different prices make products I'd wish they changed the color or material but I buy them anyway because I like the design.

I almost bought one recently from a member on BF, but I myself couldn't justify the $1300 price tag which seems to be the price on the secondary market for them NIB. I have no problem spending top dollar for a quality knife but there were too many concerns regarding the knife justifying its own price. I agree the Grimsmo knives should be significantly less. They are basically utilizing small batched runs to limit the supply of their knives in the marketplace to bring a premium for their knives.

Is RWL 34 and CPM 154 similar in performance, edge retention, toughness?

No, the prices posted on the Grimsmo site are in USD, so the the cheapest Norseman starts at $950 USD plus tax and shipping. That's kinda whack.

C captainsb965 I am no expert on steels but I have been given the impression that RWL-34 is essentially CPM-154
Hackenslash Hackenslash I will concede the last time I checked their prices was probably 8 months ago and it is certainly possible they have gone up.

For 950$ I'd get a personalized custom folder from Brian Nadeau / Sharp by Design, at least I could decide how my knife looks and it's on par quality wise. But hey, if you want a Norseman you have to go Grimsmo.

Would need to hold one with my own hands to decide if it's cost justified. I'd like to think there is a "next level" of craftsmanship that can command the asking price.

That's what I have heard as well regarding RWL 34. Assuming it's very similar to CPM 154, I don't think the steels performance can justify the price. I think CPM 154 is a great steel, but there are certainty higher performing steel.
