Grind-In at Ethan's, Spring 2014

I'll be observing and learning, donno about grinding though.

Don't worry, this is open to people who've never even touched a bar of raw steel before - that's kind of the whole idea. (minors will need permission from their parents, of course)

If you make a goof, I or someone else will help you fix it.
If for some reason a person cannot physically do their own grinding, I will do it for them to their requested pattern.

Looky-lous are welcome, but please don't be intimidated or afraid to try. We're a pretty friendly bunch, I promise :)

Well in that case, count me in! Thanks! The extent of my experience is squaring off the spine of all my Beckers, and an incident will a file and an angle grinder. :D

It occurs to me that I might be able to help with some sort of sharpening segment/masterclass/station as well (since that seems to have come up). Have access to DMT aligner, Lansky, KME, freehand on stones or rods, many strops, and sandpaper pads. Have put a slack belt edge or two on a knife or two as well.

Also, I'm hatching a plan for a knife build if there's enough time left on the grinder.

By all means, please do! If you bring your gear and share your expertise, surely someone will benefit. :)

Again and anon, all credit goes to Ethan, his hospitality, and the community he's built, allowing us to share this sort of thing together.

Should I bring my 55lb harbor freight anvil?
(won't be bringing it if I ride in on the motorcycle.)

Man this thing is on page four and the gathering is only 3 weeks away!

Anyway, Picked up some leather to make a few stops this week. Just wondering how long you think they should be or prefer them?
I am going to put a rough side on on one side of the board and a smooth side on the other unless you want something different. I have enough to make four really nice strops for sure, maybe more if you think they should be shorter than I think.

Also gonna leave them clean, meaning no compound, and just bring my three different sticks of compound and we can load them up as we see fit, and that way we can try other peoples compounds as well if needed.

I can also bring my work sharps too if you all want to see and try them out. I have both models now and man the Ken Onion edition is 100 times better than the original.

Please let me know if there is anything else I might need to bring.

Whatever works for you, man. Your ideas all sound good to me! :)

Beer. Plenty of beer. As soon as the power tools are turned off, there's gonna be a couple thirsty makers scrounging around... :p

Bring any tools you feel like bringing folks. Heat treat ovens, anvils, whatever. Worst case scenario we forget about it because we are busy with other stuff or keeled over by the fire with laughter.

I don't see why not. There's really no such thing as "too many tools and materials" (especially when I don't have to lug 'em around :p) Some of the other guys are talking about doing some forging, so hey! Run it up the flag pole and see who salutes :)

Blood moons, weird weather, and Trade being serious. The world's not going to last much longer.......:D

That may be true. But we're gonna have a blast on the way to the apocalypse! ;)

I would love to try my hand at making a small knife. I have used 30" grinders at a iron foundry before and have all my fingers.

I was very much looking forward to attending. I've had some lingering health issues for awhile that have been getting progressively worse. I had a leg injury 10 years ago that developed into a clot. Things were okay until about 6 months ago when I started having some circulation issues. I'm scheduled to have outpatient surgery (venogram and stent) right before this excursion and my fear is that I may not be well enough to attend. I really want to, I'm just not sure what kind of shape I'll be in.

I've offered to donate time and some materials to this, and want don't want my absence to negatively affect anyone. Please let me know what I can do in the event that I am unable to attend.

Thanks. Fingers crossed, and a prayer, and hopefully I'll still be able to attend.
