Grind-In at Ethan's, Spring 2014

Everything is packed up and ready to go. I am too lazy to list it all... but suffice to say, I'm bringing everything necessary to grind a knife... hopefully our friends show up with the HT stuff... those cats are generally more reliable than me so I don't think that will be a problem...

This is gonna be a hoot, folks! Thanks so much to all of you for participating and helping put this together. Pics coming soon....

things went pretty well, I think - did the folks who slept in and hung around for breakfast get to do more grinding Sunday?

I'm incredibly pleased with how well it went! Thank you SO much to Todd Matt and Vik for all your help, Pointy for leading the sharpening seminar, and of course to all the participants. If y'all enjoyed it half as much as I did, it was a success. :D

I'm not sure of the final count, but somewhere around 12-15 blades got ground and/or forged, drilled, heat-treated tempered and sharpened, in about 9 hours of shoptime. That's really pretty amazing. Plus I'm pretty sure almost everyone got pins and scale material cut/drilled so they can finish their handles when they get home.

Special thanks to Ethan for his hospitality, of course. We couldn't have done it without you, Boss! :)

for anyone who was wondering how hot the coal fire got -- when cleaning the clinkers out yesterday I noticed we melted a hole in the 1/2" thick cast iron drain grate I was using in the fire pit.

I melted - and broke - the tip of the knife I was banging :D hey Erik what coal is that and where can I get some? I need to do that setup!

I had such a blast, thanks guys, it felt like we had known each other for a long time!! Terrio, Vik, Tacket, Pointy, Psyop, Murph, Todd and everybody, I had a helluva weekend for sure!

Dang, so sorry I missed this one.
Looks like a great time, guys.

centaur forge I suspect - definitely crushed down to a good size for forging.

That coal was hot. At one point, we had five of us taking heats just as fast as we could trade tongs and hammer, it was kind of symphonic in its own way.
The shop was a hive of activity in all disciplines and in all directions; and I had the kind of fun that leaves you walking funny, yet longing for more :D.

Thanks so much to everyone who made this a reality: Ethan, Mr Terrio, Tackett, Hunt, the steel and abrasive suppliers who donated consumables, those who listened to my disjointed ramblings on sharpening, and to all of those who got to turn a pile of assorted things into something useful, thanks!!!

I did manage to snap a shot of some blades cooling right after quench, and a very brief video of Matt quenching a blade. Sorry I didn't get more... I was kinda busy ;)

Does anyone have any more pics? Pics would be cool or people will think we made it all up :D

It helps grain refinement if you perform the "two step" pre quench. ;)
