Grind-In at Ethan's, Spring 2014

I just got off the phone with the fine folks at New Jersey Steel Baron, and more 1084 steel is on the way. In addition to the 1080 steel we've already got from Alpha Knife Supply, and the very generous support of the many makers and sponsors who are chipping in for belts and tools and instruction/guidance, and of course Ethan's hospitality... we're ready to rock!

There will be a brief safety talk before any power tools are fired up. I can definitely bring a couple pairs of safety glasses for folks to wear. Murph may be able to bring some dust masks. I very strongly recommend that all who plan to participate wear closed-toe shoes and a shirt that they don't mind getting dirty. Minors are very welcome as far as I'm concerned, but they will need an adult parent/guardian with them.

I'll be rolling in to Ethan's compound sometime Friday evening, so I'm hoping to get this Grind-In started around Saturday noon-ish. It will take as long as it takes.

This is going to be a whole lot of fun, folks. I'm really excited about it. Thank you all very much for your interest and support! :)

Any of the makers going to the gathering that can do a 9" 1095 heat treat? Save some shipping if I could just pick it up there. Just let me know how much if you can. Thanks.

Lists in the original post are updated again. If anyone has any questions or concerns, please call me direct at 865-253-7378 or e-mail me at james@terrionknives.com.

This is gonna be a boat-load of fun, folks! Thank you in advance to everyone participating and chipping in!! :)

ok, question: I have finished 4 knives to be sent to Peter's for HT. 3 will be sold, the fourth is my version of a brute for me. Now, if I send it with the others I don't think it will get back to me on time to take to the gathering. Would it be possible to take it and do the ht and tempering over there? I really wanna show it to the peeps and Uncle E! It is 1084 and a hair under 14" overall.

That's entirely up to the cats doing the HT stuff... mainly 1066vik and tackett13; so I'll let them answer. It sure wouldn't hurt to bring 'em along and find out... everybody loves looking at blades in-progress :)

well, it is done, just missing the ht and some sanding afterwards. It will have becker scales until I finish making some dyed canvas micarta scales and pin them on.

Cool

I just spoke with Ethan. He seems very pleased and excited about this little project :)

He mentioned moving his grinder outside to help with cleanliness and allowing more room for folks to gather around it and watch what's going on. He also said he has a bunch of 220-grit belts we can use, which is a very good thing

I'll be packing up the steel, belts and various tools tonight and tomorrow, and will post a list of what I'm bringing. Let me know if there's anything I'm forgetting...

You're in, Psy  List updated.

I'll bring my propane forge Zulu we can harden it for you as long as whoever it was brings that little toaster oven along to temper it.

So just to be sure folks.
I got a forge. I have some quench oil I can bring or better yet, I can bring an old supply of canola oil which be less likely to flare up and/or break or warp a knife on us.
Or if somebody else is bringing some type of quenchant already I'll leave mine behind.

We will also need a toaster oven to temper. I think someone mentioned one before and if that's still a go then post here.

Matt - I was going to bring some peanut oil - but if you have canola that works just as well and has lessof a chance of making a mess in my truck! :D
I'll bring some masks, too.
also - I have a bunch of 150 grit 1x42 AO belts I can bring for shaping handles if someone closer has a sander they would fit on.

I'll snatch up some safety glasses tonight before I split. Anything else? Earplugs?

I will bring mine Eric save you the mess. Tell ya what though if you have some type of metal dunk tank that will handle larger blades bring it. My tanks don't move. I will bring the canola in a ammo can but it is only capable of handling a 10-11" blade.
