I have a lot of catching up to do here but in the meantime, I'll check in with a pic.

I hope everyone is well and I look forward to getting all caught up.

There was once a family of cutlers in Stannington, on the edge of Sheffield, with the surname Furness, to whom I am related through the marriage of my auntie and Godmother, my father's younger sister. The Furness clan go back a long way, but originally made their way to Sheffield from the Derbyshire village of Eyam. Today, Eyam is a small, pretty village, but it is best known here in England for the selfless decision of the inhabitants, in 1665, to isolate themselves, after plague broke out, having arrived in a bundle of rags transported from London. A stark contrast to the situation here today, where infected people risk the lives of others, rather than miss a single day's pay

I thought you might like to see some photos of Eyam I took on a visit a couple of years back. I can remember visiting Eyam Hall, the grand-looking building, as little more than a toddler, on a Mother's Union trip with my mother and grandmother :)

Jack, fantastic pictures and very cool to hear that you have a bloodline connected to the Furness cutlery legacy. Furness Barlow knives were sold at least as early as 1877 in the United States as described in an American hardware catalog from that time. Very interesting and selfless story of the people from Eyam. I'm always in awe of the beautiful pictures that both you and Donn send of English scenery and architecture.

Pretty grim great house.
Sweet church. How old is the standing cross?

The Anglo-Saxon cross is from the 8th-9th century, and was originally ten feet high, as opposed to eight, as now. It was a wayside preaching cross set up the nearby moors, and was moved to the churchyard in the 18th century

Evening Guardians !

Looking good Dan :)

Thanks Jack. She's gotten some mileage in the last few months. Someday she might catch up with your hhb, but I doubt it.View attachment 1310064 I saw your GAW, I've been racking my brain to come up with a way to enter but I'm afraid most all of my jokes aren't porch friendly. ;)

Thanks Willie, I think I got a head start there :) Good luck! :D

I feel like watching The Seventh Seal. You know, in honour of Max von Sydow.

By coincidence, some scenes popped up in my YouTube feed a couple of weeks ago, which I watched, and I was reminiscing about seeing it back in 1982

Thank you Harvey, you have a great eye for an imaginative photo, extraordinary my friend :)

Great to see you here Dylan, nice choice for Black Friday ;)

Many thanks my friend :)

Morning Guardians, looks like a rather overcast day here, but at least it's not raining! :D I hope everyone is doing OK, and staying safe

Another photo from my short walk yesterday, showing the old, and currently derelict, church down the road.

Yeah, it wouldn't stand out anymore would it? I only have a standard-size mallet, so my tennis-elbow has flared up, so no slingshot for a few days :(

I think it is beautiful Dan, and often find myself absent-mindedly looking at it :) I'm sure your stick would be a work of art :D :)

Very thoughtful Jer ;) The Last Man on Earth popped up recently in my YouTube feed, I don't think I've seen it since I was a kid :)

Here's Mitchell's Jazz Kings Hep! from 1922...

...and Eddy Arnold's Hep Cat Baby from 1954

For anyone interested in the etymology of slang words, I thoroughly recommend Max Decharne's Vulgar Tongues

Thank you Harvey :) Me too, I haven't seen it for some years, and it has always been one of my favourite films, so it was a treat. I enjoyed the story about the time machine prop itself, presented by Rod Taylor, in the special features :) I can see the parallels my friend! :D Another fantastic photo Harvey, if nothing else, hopefully there'll be a big reduction in food-poisoning incidents  :D

Morning Guardians, I hope everyone is managing OK, and staying well :) How you doing Mark Ramrodmb Ramrodmb ? It's a sunny day here, and I will be making a trip to the pharmacy this morning to pick up some new medication, which I'm hoping will put paid to my long-standing cough :) Take care Guardians

Hi Jack. Still struggling, my friend. Thanks for thinking of me.
I hope you find relief with your new meds.

IMG_20200327_121549.jpgJust picked up this delight. It has been at my mother's house for two weeks and due to a spot of self-isolation i have only just collected it. I think I have got a good one, the wood is beautiful and the fit and finish is not half bad. After turning away from an hour and a half queue just to get into the local supermarket it cheered me up no end. I hope everyone is well.

Forcing myself to learn new technologies so I can hold classes online.
I'm a very traditional type of teacher, white boards and lectures, so learning new tricks has this old dog scratching his head a bit.
But I'm learning with the help of my Wife and Kids, and my students are excited to get reconnected with me and their classmates.

Hey look, my first "knife stuck in a tree" picture... :D

No trees were harmed. ;)

Sorry to hear that Mark, I was thinking of you again this morning. Hope you're going to be better again soon. Thanks my friend, I'm not that confident about them at the moment, but we'll see :)

That's sad. It would make a groovy bachelor pad/artist's haven, provide employment for local young women. Maybe if Publishers Clearing House comes through this time...

Church Architecture vol 2 by Petit.

It is sad Jer, after it was a church (Baptist - built in 1887) it was a synagogue, then a Sikh temple, then the Sikhs got a new place, and it has been empty ever since, more than 20 years. Until a few years ago, there was a ruined area at the back, where there had once been a fire, but that was demolished. I wish they'd find something to do with it :( Here it is many years ago

My girlfriend is having to do the same John, she reckons it's more work than teaching a normal class  Nice photo my friend, I'd say for every six knife-stuck-in-a-tree photos I take, one is in focus (if I'm lucky)! :D

I had half an hour sat outside in my deck chair :)

Tell her i feel bad for her, it's definitely more time consuming than teaching to live students.

Thanks John, I will do :) She seems to spend as much time in video conferences with her managers as teaching at the moment

I’ve been spending some time helping Pam setup for working at home. She’s going to be in the office on certain days and home on other’s. I’ve got this Ebony beauty for Black Friday! Y’all stay safe out there!

Nice ebony Ron :) I'm used to working from home, to a greater or lesser extent, I've been doing it a long time now - though I do a lot less work than I once did  ;)

My old press pass (from 1993 this one)
