Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Forgive me for having forgotten your previous posts Greg, but I forget a lot of things these days :D Thank you my friend, now I really am blushing! Great pic

Don't worry, Jack, I'd forgotten about them, too! ;)

Good Morning Guardians and Happy Saint Patrick's Day
Package of corned beef ready to go. Throwing it in the crock pot along with a bottle of Guinness. Let it cook all day.

That's the stuff, John! Mine went into the slow cooker around 6 AM. Good things come to us early risers come dinner time.

I couldn't resist taking this picture today...

And now I hope your blade is as clean as a whistle! 🤣

Fabulous read. Cheers!

Thank you kindly, Harvey!

You don't know what you're missing.:p:p:p

I don’t know, a good corned beef sandwich is pretty hard to beat. 😉😁

I'm with cudgee cudgee on this one. I'll take corned beef and cabbage over a sandwich any day. But, you know what the best way is? Serving the leftovers for breakfast as corned beef hash with poached eggs and a side of hashbrowns. Yum!

Meanwhile, here's how dinner looked here. :)

Pàdruig Pàdruig not an entry for me, Dylan, as I’m already fortunate enough to have a very nice example of the 2019 Ironwood Guardians Lambsfoot.

I will, however, participate in sharing my favorite story about Jack.

From 2016 to 2019, my brother and his family lived in Bath, in the southwest of England. We were fortunate enough to visit them twice during the time they lived there, first in the summer of 2017, and again for Christmas in 2018.

Before our 2018 visit, I reached out to Jack and asked if he might be able to meet up if I were to make my way up to Sheffield, to which he kindly agreed. We flew into London overnight (left Minneapolis in the evening and arrived in London the next morning), I put my wife and daughter on a coach to Bath, then took the Tube into London to catch a train to Sheffield.

Jack had sent me some directions (with pictures!) from the train station to my hotel, which proved to be very helpful, as I was unable to charge my phone on the train and it was nearly dead by the time I arrived in Sheffield. After checking in at the hotel, I sought out an adapter (so I could charge my phone) and some food (Nando’s), then crashed pretty early.

Jack and I met up the next morning in the hotel lobby, where we chatted for a bit and exchanged a couple gifts. Jack, of course, gave me two different Lambsfoot knives — a horn Big ‘Un and a rosewood model which has proven to be one of my favorites — among several other wonderful gifts. I left my bags with the hotel desk, and we headed out to see Sheffield.

After a nice café breakfast, we stopped in at Wright’s, where Jack had some important business: picking up a prototype for the 2019 Ironwood Guardians knife!

As we walked around Sheffield, Jack provided an endless amount of interesting information and humorous anecdotes about Sheffield’s various neighborhoods, buildings and, of course, old cutlery and steel works. I had such a wonderful time walking around and chatting with Jack that I often forgot to take photos of the things we were seeing. 😵‍💫

Throughout the day we stopped in at some local shops, a couple museums, several pubs, and one coffee shop (while I had crashed early the night before, jet lag also had me up again around 2 am, so a midday coffee was much appreciated).

We spent a good bit of time at the Kelham Island Museum, which was full of interesting exhibits (if a bit short on Sheffield cutlery content), and even got to peek through the widow of Stan Shaw’s workshop, although Stan was out for the holidays, as this was less than a week before Christmas.

One of my favorite parts of our day was the various pubs we visited, which included The Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern, The Bath Hotel and the Sheffield Tap. I could've sworn there were one or two others, but those are the pubs I remember specifically.

Now I don’t say that the pubs were one of my favorite parts just because I absolutely love sitting down to a pint in a real English pub (which, of course, I do). It’s actually because these were the moments when got Jack and I got to sit down and just talk as friends. We talked about our lives, we talked about movies, we talked about knives, of course. Several of y’all came up in conversation (mostly good things, I promise). 😉 Jack is 100% the genuine, wonderful person you get here on the forum, and I’m still so thankful that we got to spend the day together. Thanks again, Jack!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Somehow, of all the pubs we visited, the only one I took any pictures in was The Fat Cat, which is a shame, too, because all of the pubs we stopped in were absolutely fantastic.

Alright, Guardians.

'Tis time for a giveaway.

I thought a wee bit on how I wanted to conduct this giveaway and wondered if I should present it within the confines of this special thread or in the forums abroad. Since this involves a special knife, I opted to keep it here and though folks who tune in here now and then are welcome to participate, this is by and large, for the Guardians proper.

Like myself, some of you have been here for awhile, a few quite a bit longer than myself. My first post in this thread was back in 2017, on page #56 - frankly, with all that has gone on, it feels like a lifetime ago. In the words of the glam rock band, Cinderella, "The more things change, the more they seem the same". In essence, despite all the changes and events over the last few years, one of the things that has remained a constant is my fondness for the Lambsfoot.

I have had the good fortune to be able to participate in most (if not all) of Jack Black's "official" SFOs. Through Jack's hard work and diligence in holding A Wright & Son to his standards, we have had the great pleasure to experience the finest knives produced from that particular factory. If you have not experienced one of Jack's SFOs, this will be your chance to gain the opportunity.

I will keep the rules simple:
1. Please be a member in good standing (not just here, but throughout BF proper)
2. I would prefer that you have at least posted here in the Guardians or will attest to lurking. I will take you at your word.
3. If you are fortunate to have won and you end up not liking the knife, please consider offering it to a fellow Guardian (I can help facilitate if needed). Obviously, I can't enforce this - it is simply a request.
4. This is a giveaway in Jack's honor. To enter - share a story, memory, or thought with Jack in mind. You all know I like pictures, so please include one with your entry as well
5. Feel free to share as many as you would like - it will still remain 1 entry per person.

I am not putting geographical limits on this. If you win, I will work with you to get the knife to you as soon as prudently possible regardless of locale.

I will let this go for a couple of weeks and will link the giveaway in my signature. I will log the entrants and will devise some manner of picking a winner - it will be randomized in some way.

On to the prize.

I came into this knife without intending to. I won't get into the details but simply put, I was trying to help out and ended up with a knife, one that I already have an excellent example of. This is Jack's 2019 Guardians Exclusive SFO, dressed up in beautiful Ironwood, fluted bolsters, and a high carbon steel Lambsfoot blade. Some have said this is one of Jack's finest - it is a matter of preference (I am partial to Ebony and Stag myself) but it is an incredibly fine knife all the same.

It is used and you will see some patina on the blade and the Ironwood has darkened some. The gorgeous grain shines through beautifully though and despite my attempts to capture it, my pictures do it no justice.

Best of luck to you all!

Wonderful giveaway, Dylan. Not an entry. My ironwood lambsfoot might be my favourite, but haven't used it much. Too pretty! Think I'll start carrying it and using it.
I don't spend as much time on the forum as I used to, but when I check in I have to look in on the Guardians thread. It feels like...home.

Serving the leftovers for breakfast as corned beef hash with poached eggs and a side of hashbrowns. Yum!
YES SIREE BOB, 🤩🤩🤩 Now we are talking A league breakfast there.😍
Meanwhile, here's how dinner looked here.
I was going to ask for a photo, you beat me to it. Looks magnificent. If you can get a good recipe for home made mustard sauce, takes it to a new level.
Mine fell apart before i could slice it... Tender stuff.
The " TRENDIES " would call that, Pulled Corned Beef in a restaurant, and add 25% to the price. o_Oo_Oo_O:rolleyes:🤠🤑
and a rosewood model which has proven to be one of my favorites
Another tick to add to my thoughts on Rosewood. Rosewood is the most under rated and under recognised wood in the cutlery industry. Just does not get the credit it deserves, it's like if you say Rosewood, people associate it with being cheap and cutting corners. 😧

Cool pic Pete
I would like to enter please.
I know of Jack through the forums as most, but I would say he holds a unique position amongst us. Look at this thread that he started years ago that is still going. Jack is definitely an influencer of this community. He has taken his enthusiasm for the pattern and civic pride from his and the knife’s home to another level that has benefited all of us who have participated in this thread. It is because of him that most all of us have been able to enjoy a useful, affordable and available knife.
Thanks for the kind words Jon :)
Sounds like all the old timers that would sit around at the donut shop in my hometown, except they seemed to be there every morning. 😁
Just like that I reckon Barrett, and if my mate did his tool-stall every day, they'd be down there every day! :D There are usually far more people standing behind the stall 'gassing', than in front of it, looking at the tools :D
That’s great, Greg! 🙂 Can I suggest an alternate title for your series?

😎🤣
🤣 🤣
I had a similar tweed flat cap that belonged to my dad, but I’m not sure what happened to it (and it never fit me, despite the fact that we had equally large heads). Great photo, Jack!
You definitely have to get the right size when it comes to a flat-cap I think Barrett :) I got mine (and the previous two) from a very old-fashioned gent's clothing shop, where they can just look at you, and know exactly what size cap you wear :D Sadly, they have 'modernized' since then :(
That's a very cool pic my friend :)
Yeah, JUST like that! 🤣
You don't know what you're missing.:p:p:p

Mmmmmm :)
It's definitely the luck of the draw here. I've had incredibly helpful clerks, and I've had some much like you describe. I walked in one phone store, and they had music playing very loudly. That alone I can deal with, but the front of the store and the back had different music playing, with the tech help desk situated right where the sound overlapped. I had a somewhat complicated question to ask and I couldn't think straight. The fellow I was speaking to had his own music blaring out of his earbuds. I've never felt so old.

Thanks!
Oh no! That would have really annoyed me too! :D There was one phone shop here, years ago, which had a small Tech section upstairs, which dealt with repairs, and I found them knowledgeable and helpful. Downstairs, it was much like Barrett's pic! :D I once approached one of their employees, who was slouched against one of the displays, tapping away on his phone. He was younger than my kids, and he didn't even look up, just slurred "What can I do for you pal?" ! In my most headmaster-like voice, I told him, "You can stand up straight son, and put your phone in your pocket!" 🤣 I was in another phone shop, enquiring about a lap-top, and the guy who was supposed to be assisting me started arguing with his manager. This then developed into a full-on punch-up! Entertaining as it was, I left the shop before the police arrived, and I had to spend the rest of the morning giving a witness statement! :D
A working hat and a working knife  :)
I don’t know, a good corned beef sandwich is pretty hard to beat. 😉😁

Wow! :)
Understandable. Everyone has their own preferred level of anonymity on a place like this. I’m always happy to redact the city from my post if you’d like.
I think it was me who introduced that, so sincere apologies if I've done wrong, and I'll get my post cleared up
I would also like to enter Pàdruig Pàdruig , thank you for the opportunity. I haven’t been around long enough to go back too far but I remember sending Jack a PM right after joining the forum. I was asking about the guardians and where I might look to pick up a Lambsfoot. He took the time to write a very informative and gracious response to which I was very grateful, and still am to this day. 😊👍View attachment 1769142
Always happy to help the 'new folk' Todd! :D ;) I'm glad you're still around buddy, great pic there :) I do miss the days when I could just send folks a Lambsfoot (going to be doing a few more giveaways again this year though)
Don't worry, Jack, I'd forgotten about them, too! ;)

Thank you for bringing back memories of our wonderful day together Barrett, it was an absolute delight to spend time with you :) For those not familiar with English geography, I should point out that, after flying in with his family, Barrett made a HUGE detour from London to Sheffield, so that we could meet up, before another long train journey to Bath. You certainly showed some stamina my friend, and I am very grateful for the effort you made. I hope we can meet again one day :)

I think that is very true Leon

Good morning Guardians, I was glad to get a good night's sleep last night, and not be woken up numerous times by the whining of my boiler! Getting it fixed is a big weight off my shoulders, and I am glad not to be tied-down waiting in for guys coming to fix it. I didn't have time to get out, and get some decent bread, for my morning toast, yesterday, but I did manage to find some cinnamon and raisin bagels :) I usually meet up with a pal on Friday mornings, but his missus put washing-up liquid in their dishwasher, so he is waiting in for delivery of a new one! I'm going to get a shave, mess around with the new phone, and hopefully head out for a coffee, and depending on the time, perhaps a little 'forenoon drinkin''! ;) :D Have a great day Guardians, thanks for putting up with all my grumbling :)

Must've been the Guinness it drank in the crockpot.
Sloppy Drunk. 🤣
The " TRENDIES " would call that, Pulled Corned Beef
Ya, once it started falling aparts it just made sense to pull it instead of cutting it. 🤣
Great pic John
Thank you, Jack.
Being the only person with Irish blood in my family (adopted), my parents always went way out for Saint Patrick's Day for me. The rest of the year was full of Italian and Basque heritage. Both my parents were Italian, and my dad's step mom was Basque. I'm not complaining, I think the Italians and Basque eat better than the Irish. 🤣
What a delicious repast
It was very good and my wife's potatoes stole the show. :)
That bagel looks delicious.
I'm glad your boiler got fixed so you could enjoy your new pillow to its fullest.
Can't wait to see what you come up with for second breakfast or forenoon-drinking.

Good Morning Guardians and TGIF
I have a pretty minimal day of virtual teaching ahead, so lots of playing with the puppy and running some errands will keep me busy.
Carrying the Charlie Lamb because it's Black Friday... and I carry Lambsfoot knives daily. Just doesn't feel right not to have one in my pocket.

Thank you, Jack.

Sounds like a good in-road into the weekend John, I hope you have a good day :) My girlfriend works from home on Fridays too, and she appreciates the break from her students I think - there was a large brawl at her college the other day, and she had to take a badly beaten teenage girl to the hospital! Some of the classes are smaller now though  That's a classy Black Friday choice my friend :)
Not to worry. I've moved to Poughkeepsie NY as a precaution. (You can tell by the way I pronounce chipmunk.)

Thanks Jack!

Good morning Guardians, with pleasure I would like to introduce a new Lamb to the flock. This is a M. May I received last night in O1 and bog oak…

View attachment 1769450View attachment 1769451View attachment 1769453
That looks nice Pete, congratulations :) I wonder if Mr May is subcontracting ALL his work to Wright's now? I still find it interesting about these O1 blades, a steel they flatly refused to use for pocket-knife blades in the past
Jack Black Jack Black what are the blades typically made of? Ive noticed some spots on my the blade of my ironwood that developed since i took it out of the box and put it in my pocket.
C70 carbon Jack  About time you carried that one! :D ;)

That looks amazing. Great choices for Second Breakfast.
I had Oatmeal for Second Breakfast. I'll be having Clam Chowder for Elevenses, and Fish Filets for Luncheon. 😃

That's crazy. Things have gotten bad out there in the real world.
