Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

a size down from my usual Mechanix gloves, and I don't think the steel liner is going to stretch

I'm hanging onto my Hartshead Barlow :)

Good morning Guardians. Another scorcher today here in southern coastal NC. Contractor is starting the construction of our gas fire pit and patio extension today. It will be fun to have for the fall, winter and spring months. I have my Senator in the pocket once again.

Yeah, expensive mistake :( I have loads of Mechanix gloves, and these are the only ones which have had inconsistent sizing, but they cost twice as much as the others  It's always nice to see OYW Jer :)

Hope it goes well Bill, nice stag there  It started off dull here, but has now brightened up, and is reasonably arm. I had some lunch in my local cafe, and then picked up some groceries. I'm sure I can find a few chores to do  ;)

The texture of your stag handles matches the texture of the rock perfectly. 🤠
I hope you have a great Friday and it leads to a fantastic weekend, my friend.
Thank you my friend, I keep thinking it's Saturday! :D Hope you have a good one too John :)

Thanks Jack. Yes, always chores to do. Hope your lunch at the cafe was good. We have friends staying with us (just two days) and I picked up some take-out breakfast. I was skeptical about it but the food wasn't bad at all.😊 All the workmen for our fire pit project showed up this morning and right now there is organized chaos😄

Happy to listen to your reasoning my friend
Well, my reasoning was The blade tapers from tang to point and the spine of the blade is not parallel with the spine of the handle. HOWEVER - You, my friend, have forgotten more about lamb foot blades than I would know if I studied the subject until I was 100 yrs old. The image is removed and all is well. No worries brother. ;)

I got a pair of these cut-resistant Mechanix gloves, mainly because I know my size. XL came, and it's a size down from my usual Mechanix gloves, and I don't think the steel liner is going to stretch
Nice gloves, nice Barlow. What led you to get the cut resistant version? Have a good one Jack.
Good Morning Guardians.
I'm Totin' the Charlie Lamb for Black Friday
A nice sheen on the haft, John. Do you polish the hafts as a part of maintenance?

Good Morning Guardians

Today is National Doughnut Day🎉

I can't keep up with them Bill  Lunch was excellent, though they rather over-feed me there! :D I'm glad you managed to find some nice take-out, and hope that your guests enjoyed it too :) Hope something good comes out of the chaos! 🤣

Dapper and debonair my friend :)

If you look back at the tang, at the 'grinder's notch', you can get an idea of how much steel has been lost through sharpening, and the line of the original edge, which I think, coupled with the shape of the spine, and the placement of the point, indicates a Spearpoint blade. We'd generally see a thousand of those for every Lambsfoot blade on a Barlow, and it's very much the default blade on old Sheffield Barlows. That one may even pre-date Wostenholm using the Lambsfoot on a Barlow. It isn't always possible to tell, with a heavily worn, or modified blade, and knives can look older than they are, but I don't see anything to indicate a Lambsfoot. Take this Abram Brooksbank though, I would never have guessed this had once been a Lambsfoot, but this is a blade which has been damaged, worn, and then drastically modified to make it back into a useable blade.

I don't usually show it here, because it varies from a Lambsfoot so much now that I don't really think it can be considered one anymore, even though it started out as one. While Lambsfoot knives were very common in Sheffield, throughout the 20th century, they usually, (not always), adhere to certain forms, while Spearpoint blades can be found on a much greater variety of patterns. In this case, the maker is obscure, but it's always worth having a good look online to see if you can pick up images of another in better condition, or better still, a catalogue cut. Thank you for your kind words Dwight, it has made for an interesting discussion

Thanks Harvey :) When I bought them, I wanted some leather work gloves for gardening (including dealing with my brambles), and for bushcraft, and they were one of the very few leather Mechanix gloves I could find here at the time. I thought they would be handy for whittling, and for my stick-making too. I've always found Mechanix gloves very good, but most importantly, I have big hands, and I thought I knew their sizing. They're tight all round, and short in the fingers unfortunately :( I'll get some use out of them I expect, but they're not as comfortable as they might be. A shame, because otherwise they seem to be very well-made gloves

Cool pic! I wish I'd known that earlier, I'd have stretched it to International Doughnut Day! 🤣 Great-looking Lambsfoot, and once again, we see how much Sheffield Lambsfoot knives can vary, even those made by the same company sometimes. Am I right in thinking that is a William Rodgers Lambsfoot Dwight? Here's a few I have
