Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Good evening Guardians, hope this finds you well. We have a broad membership base here and i have a question without notice for you. Have any of you ever seen potato on the menu at a Chinese restaurant ??? We all have a love of food here, and a broad liking of different foods, just like to see your answers, there is method in my madness. ;) :)
There's Sichuan stir fried shredded potatoes. Round these parts we might call the potatoes matchsticked.

I don't believe I've ever seen potatoes on the menu at our Chinese restaurants... but to be honest, I haven't looked that hard for them.

More great info, as expected from you knowledgeable Guardians! I spent several more minutes whacking at the blade/tang and managed to move it over the tiniest bit. I think I’ll stop here (yes, yes, I’ve said that before 🙄) as I’d truly hate to damage this knife. Particularly concerned about the bone scales, as they’re already cracked down at the butt-end pin. The edge is no longer in danger of hitting a liner, and frankly that’s good enough for me.

Good to see daylight between blade and liner! I had the thought of putting a tiny drop of super glue in/on the scale cracks, but also thought that may just make things uglier without adding much/any strength. Any thoughts?

Superglue works great for stabilizing and filling cracks in bone. I've done it more than a few times with old knives. Just take your time and don't apply too much at one time, you can do it in layers.

Interesting question, I don't think I have. Common on Thai menus, but not on Chinese. We do get 'Salt and pepper chips', but I doubt that is authentic Chinese cuisine :thumbsup:

I prefer epoxy, for the most part, gives a little more time, and you can dye and texture it, to match the bone :thumbsup:

My latest acquisition and my first old Lambsfoot. It is was made by John Blyde, Sheffield. The seller’s photos were awful and when it arrived someone had decided to take a Dremel or worse to the blade and so it took some effort to remove the gouges. Absolutely my new pocket favorite - rock solid blade, centered with great snap and lovely age to the scales. I haven’t done any homework on the interweb re it’s possible age but if anyone out there has a guesstimate I would love to know….

Good morning Guardians. Got a day off for the election. It’s 45 degrees, and there’s a calm breeze, perfect fire weather. Going to vote and then take the boat to be winterized. I was getting something out of the freezer last night, and accidentally left some falafel out, so I had them with pitta bread, salad, sweet chilli hummus, and some habanero sauce. My Hartshead Barlow was perfect for splitting the pitta :)

After tea, I decided to do some work on my crossbow, fitting a different laser, adding a flashlight, changing to a better trigger, and drilling some holes for side picatinny rails. Barlow proved a big help :thumbsup:

4” handle with about 3” of cutting edge. Scales would appear to be bone and not composite, so I’m guessing based on the little information I’ve come across that it was manufactured sometime between WWI and WWII? Would love any insight anyone may have. I’ve oiled and sharpened it up and am really enjoying carrying this piece of Sheffield history!

It's always good to see a returning Guardian, particularly when they come bearing treasure like that! :D Nice find :) It's a great-looking Lambsfoot, covers are certainly bone, strange to see such an off-centre blade though :thumbsup:

John Nowill & Sons have history going back to !700 when one their 2 longstanding marks (* over D) was granted to Thomas Nowill (1676-1704). The mark subsequently passed to his younger brother, William, and then to his son David. In 1786, David's son, Thomas Nowill, co-founded Hague & Nowill, a partnership which lasted until 1797. After Thomas Hague retired, the business became Thomas Nowill & Co, and in 1811, Thomas Nowill & Son, employing between ten and thirty men.

In 1825, Thomas retired himself, and his sons Thomas and William worked together, manufacturing silver fruit & dessert knives, penknives, pocketknives, fancy knives, and desk knives, along with various other items. Following their father's death though, they went their separate ways, each running their own cutlery business.

In 1842, John Nowill acquired the 'Krosskeys' mark. He died in 1847, leaving 8 sons, (with 5 joining the business). The youngest, Arthur, died in 1896, but the 4 brothers continued to run the business jointly. John, the oldest brother, was the senior partner, and the business continued to expand under his watch, employing a hundred men by 1881, as well as 10 boys, and 15 women. After John's death in 1900, his own sons ran the business, along with their uncle, Jack.

In 1928, Nowill's became a limited company, with Jack's son William Esmond Nowill as the senior partner. In 1947, the business was sold to F.E. & J.R Hopkinson Ltd, which continued to use the Nowill marks. They are still in use by Jack Adams Ltd, who subsequently acquired Hopkinson.

That's bad about the blade, and unusual. I think it would be worth you getting it fixed, not too hard for something with cuttlin' skills I'm told :thumbsup:

Leon i've eaten in Chinese restaurants from Bolivia to Canada and I've never seen potatoes.
