Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Glad to see you still enjoy the Blackwell Jack :)

Yeah, I remember when there were lots of peanuts at the bottom of the box. My favorite part. And the prizes used to be toys, e.g., a plastic pinball machine. Now it's just paper c**p!
Amen on the peanuts, PJohn; I thought they went a little light on the peanuts in the old days, but TWO in a box is scandalous!:thumbsdown: My favorite Cracker Jack prize was always the little plastic magnifiers. ;)

It's hard to make out, but they are the names of the knights of the round table.
I think it's a trivet. My sister bought it for me in London.
Thanks for the explanation :cool:; that's very cool, but I was struggling with the "font"!

Thanks, GT :) I always wondered why the Canadian Thanksgiving was so much earlier than the USA. Wikipedia said, because are harvest is earlier than our neighbors to the South amongst other tidbits, I'll go with that. Besides it spreads out the Turkey feast a little farther apart. :p
Makes sense to me, Dave. ;)

...
Sorry to hear that GT, battling bureaucracy can feel like trying to run through porridge :( Nice to hear about the other exercise though :)
...
Thanks for the heads-up GT, I wonder if others are seeing them :( I have been using PB again due to the recent BF upload fiasco o_O

Nice review my friend :)
...
I hope everyone had a great weekend :) I was rather busy, so wasn't able to spend as much time on The Porch as I would have liked. I'm actually off to see a tailor today, with a pal of mine who is getting married soon, as we both want a waistcoat making up. Just hope the feller has enough cloth in stock! :D Have a good week folks

My waistcoat pocket choice today ;)

Thanks for the replies, Jack. :)
I'm happy to be getting in more than 6 miles of walking most days; very enjoyable when I don't have to feel guilty about the time it takes. ;)
Today, I could see all the pics that were not viewable by me yesterday, so that's progress!:thumbsup::rolleyes:
A waistcoat is just the ticket if you try out braces to hold your pants up! :) Apparently, cultured men realize that suspenders are actually an undergarment that shouldn't be seen, but belong under a jacket, vest, or waistcoat. Who knew??
Your AC looks Absolutely Charming in front of the big wheel!:cool::thumbsup:

This wee stag ,a gift from JackBlack, never leaves my pocket.Does all I ask of it .
Your stag lambsfoot is boffo, @bonzodog !:thumbsup::cool:

I'm liking Imgur, so far. It's fast, and I can shuffle my pictures into different folders without losing the link in earlier posts. Of course, since it's working so well, they will probably "upgrade" soon.
0WmMrli.jpg
Compelling colors on your stag, Rachel!:cool::thumbsup: Do you know how to post Imgur photos from inside an "album"? I spent time when I first started with Imgur organizing my pics into meaningful albums to make it easier for me to find the image I wanted, but choosing an image inside an album doesn't give me the various posting options that make Imgur so easy to use from the entire un-albumed collection. :(

...
Thanks for the tip :) I do have an Imgur account, but haven't used it much. I've also posted in the past using Google. I was lulled into complacency by the ease with which it WAS possible to upload directly using the BF software...
Yeah, I seem to be regularly running into size problems with the direct uploads to BF. :( I've been spending a little time each day reducing the sizes of my photos. That takes me only 3 clicks per pic, but it gets tedious fast. Eventually, I'm sure I'll get my pics all smaller than 500 KB without too much pain, but I sure hope the size limit per image doesn't shrink AGAIN later!

Yesterday I finally got around to sharpening my new rosewood lambsfoot. I like small edge angles and have both of my buffalo horn models profiled in the ballpark of 13 DPS. I decided to start with 15 DPS for this one to see whether I notice a difference.

I’m still building my Tormek skills and the bevel I ended up with is not perfectly uniform, but it is better than I likely would have done freehand. The important thing is that the edge is sharp, probably the sharpest I’ve gotten a lambsfoot. I’m looking forward to putting it through its paces and seeing how I like that angle and how the edge holds up. Stay tuned.
Looks good, Greg!:thumbsup: Glad to hear that you have a Tormek and are learning how to use it effectively!:cool:;) I'm still trying to get comfortable with my DMT Magnaguide system.

Apologies for the late reply GT I've been off the forums for a bit due to work.
Yip I fixed the tip of my lambsfoot using gentle pressure applied by a G clamp. I'm convinced I've lost a miniscule piece of the tip  but if I did it's not visible. ...

Yes I believe the LDS Temple does reference the Temple of Solomon. It also references the 12 tribes of Israel, especially in the construction of their baptismal font which is supported by twelve oxon.

Thanks for the update on the bent tip saga, David; glad you got it straightened, and I'm sure you'll get an even more satisfying patina back in no time with all your pies!:cool::D
Thanks also for the LDS info.

...Thanks for the compliment too, I'm not sure about the age of the AB, it has been cleaned quite a bit, 1950's maybe, possibly a little earlier? ...
Another pic of my Lambsfoot today ;)

Whatever the age, that's an intriguing knife, Jack!:cool::thumbsup:

Glad to see you still enjoy the Blackwell Jack :)

I have only posted pictures from Imgur on a desktop computer, so it may be different if you're using a phone, but it's the same whether I'm selecting a picture from "all images" or inside an album.

r8shell - that is an extremely handsome knife.
r8shell r8shell - I echo this. You are on a roll. I'm sticking with the ivory as number 1 though just cause it looks so classic and elegant.
Thank you! :)

Thanks Jack. In case it wasn’t obvious in the original post, the top one is my everyday buffalo horn lambsfoot, which sports a ~13 DPS edge I set with a KME a long time ago and have maintained with frequent stropping and occasional light freehand touchups on an ultrafine DiaSharp stone.

I’m looking forward to doing some side-by-side comparisons. You use 15 DPS, correct? I know that Cambertree Cambertree puts a lot of care into sharpening. I wonder what bevel angle he prefers...

I did realise that Greg, I hope my post didn't confuse things

I only have one Lambsfoot that is 15 DPS, most of them are closer to 20, which works OK for me. I should perhaps give the 15 DPS another try though. I think Cambertree Cambertree generally uses 15 DPS too (though he has LF knives which are sharpened differently I believe). About time we saw him here, and he loves a good chat about sharpening I think :)

Hey my fellow Guardians! Nice to see you got a Tormek, Greg. I’ve played with a friends one a bit, and it seems you can achieve really great results with it. You’re right, it’s an especially handy device to have for sharpening tools like chisels, axes and larger blades with. Did you get the ‘Japanese Waterstone’ finishing wheel. Very nice results too - I daresay the uneven bevel height is more a product of the blade flats than the Tormek or your sharpening technique.

Yes, I’ve experimented with different ways of sharpening my wee LF flock - Japanese waterstone (Naniwa Chosera) progressions, SiC sandpaper convexing, as well as the trusty Sharpmaker.

My favoured technique for ease of resharpening is just to use the Sharpmaker diamond rods to set the edge at 15dps, then clean up the bevel with the finer rods. Resharpening is then easy to do at 15dps, finishing with a few light 20dps passes on the finest stone, and a light strop on CBN pasted (1 and 0.25 micron) smooth leather.

I’m digging the diverse conversational threads here at the moment.

Had the ol’ ebony out along with a few other knives to do a batch of hot chilli sauce recently. The lambsfoot works great for cutting the stalk ends off lots of chillis before blending them.

Thanks for the explanation :cool:; that's very cool, but I was struggling with the "font"!
I believe the font is called "blackletter." The same or similar to that used in the first edition of the 1611 Authorised Version of the Holy Bible. The lettering around the roses in the center says something like: "This is the round table of King Arthur with all of his many knights." I could make out Sir Laucelot and Sir Kay. The white rose in the center should be familiar to the Guardians of the Lambsfoot!

Glad to see you still enjoy the Blackwell Jack :)

That's good exercise my friend, thanks for the compliment on my AC :) When I was a kid, I had a friend whose mother, despite their modest standing, was a terrible snob. The main butt of this seemed to be her poor husband, who was just a nice, ordinary bloke. I went on holiday for a week with them as a teenager, and I always remember one particularly cutting remark, aimed at her long-suffering spouse, "Don't show your braces Alec, it looks common."

Yes, I re-sized mine below the original limit, but the whole system seems ill-considered, inconsistent, and the administration of it totally unreliable. Who knows if it'll shrink again, or be scrapped altogether :(

Whatever the age, that's an intriguing knife, Jack!:cool::thumbsup:

2023 is a fair old wait! :D Thanks for the great pics and link David, I've never actually visited Darlington. I'll have to make up for that sometime :) Thanks for the compliment too, I'm not sure about the age of the AB, it has been cleaned quite a bit, 1950's maybe, possibly a little earlier? Nice composition my friend, good of you for helping your mum. Hope you have a nice day David :)

Another pic of my Lambsfoot today ;)

A quality looking knife anyways which looked like it was well loved.
The NRM revamp is a big project. At least 3 years for phase 1. But the second phase requires the permanent closure of Leeman Road. That can only occur when the access routes to the York Eye development (the huge old railway site) are all complete. Sounds like a waste of £55million if you ask me :D

Reminds me of my mum and dad. My mum is working class from Liverpool, but her family had bigger ideas. My dad was a not so well off working class farmer from Lancashire. I remember my mum telling my dad once, after he'd not done some job or other she'd been bothering him about, that she'd "married below her station".

Ebony looks ready for action there.
A bit of work for me first then off into the wilds of Cheshire with the rosewood.

There were 150 seats at the round table, if I correctly recall my Mallory. I'm pretty sure even Mallory doesn't name anywhere near that many knights.

Thanks, it was a very nice gift :)

£55 Million is a heck of a lot of money isn't it?

For all their many faults, my extended family were never in any doubt about their social position! :D

Hope you have a great afternoon David, and that the weather is as good in Cheshire as it is in Leeds, where it is absolutely glorious today :)

Hello fellow Guardians! :) I am regretfully without a Lambsfoot this week, however, I have been dropping in for a visit several times daily. ;) I just wanted to share a little of nature’s beauty this morning and since it’s Wooden Wednesday I’m posting a photo of the “Three Amigos”, my three Ebony Lambsfoot knives. :D

Looks good, Greg!:thumbsup: Glad to hear that you have a Tormek and are learning how to use it effectively!:cool:;) I'm still trying to get comfortable with my DMT Magnaguide system.

Thanks GT. Learning is the operative word there. There's quite a bit to learn about using the Tormek and I have a long way to go before I'd consider myself proficient. It's fun, though. :)

Nice to see you got a Tormek, Greg. I’ve played with a friends one a bit, and it seems you can achieve really great results with it. I'm impressed with it and am looking forward to what I'll be able to do with it once I'm more comfortable with it. I don't have the Japanese waterstone. The stone that comes with it is plenty for my needs. My main use for it will be my carving hatchet, larger carving knives, and kitchen knives, but I do plan to experiment more with it for pocket knives. Once I decide between the 13 and 15 DPS angle, I plan to use it to sharpen my 2018 Ebony Guardians Edition lambsfoot, which has been sitting mostly idle waiting for me to put a really sharp edge on it.

Speaking of edge angles, initial impressions are that I prefer the 13 DPS edge I have on my buffalo lambsfoot over the 15 DPS edge I have on the rosewood. Both are very sharp, but I'm finding that the 13 DPS edge moves through cardboard with less effort than the 15 DPS edge does. I guess that's consistent with what @jacknife often says about thin blades. Breaking down cardboard boxes is one of my main uses for a pocket knife and I haven't had any problems with the edge rolling, so I'll probably settle on that. But, I'll keep the 15 DPS edge on the rosewood for a while longer and use it for a week or two more before deciding for sure.
