Good morning Guardians, it's bright and sunny here, but cold no doubt. It's Remembrance Day weekend, and today is called Armistice Day here, when, on the 11th hour of the 11th day, in November, the WW1 guns fell silent. The generals liked the symmetry, but after the ceasefire was agreed, a lot of men continued to needlessly lose their lives, including a miner from Leeds
The Sheffield Regiment was decimated on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Three of my great grandfathers, (two of whom were Irish), did not return from WW1, and the fourth, who had re-enlisted, was wounded. If the war had been a couple of years earlier, I might not be here. Here's a photo of my surviving grandfather, I hadn't known he was wounded until I was researching one of my grandfathers who didn't make it, and came across a press report, quite by chance.
Both my grandfathers made it through WW2, but of course many good, young men, from all over the world, didn't
Carrying my Needham Lamb today, it has an unusual feature
I'm going to be working all weekend, but I'll go into town for the two minute's silence we have here. Have a great weekend Guardians
