Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Beautiful knife! Love the look of it. This is a novice question, but what type of steal did they use back in the day?
Hi,
This is a new knife using 1095 carbon with American Elk. There are many steels available to cutlers today
I don't know for sure the predominate steel used on older lambs. Now you have given me something to research.

Bob

Tasty looking samich Jack ! 😍
Thanks pal 😊👍
Good morning Guardians !

Carrying my Holborn Agricare Lamb today 👍

You have a fantastic collection of vintage Lambs Steve, thank you for the great photographs of them 😎👍

The history of steel in Sheffield is a LONG one. The older knives here will have forged blades, made from the finest Sheffield steel, by men who were the best in the business. Stan Shaw, (an old Sheffield cutler), was asked a lot about what steel he used. He found the question exasperating. "I use GOOD steel!" 😉👍

I find this super interesting.

On a side note, I have an older Sheffield Bowie blade that I’m trying to find out more about. I made the handle for it, but the blade I got from a buddy’s neighbour, who found it at a garage sale.
But that doesn’t belong in this thread I think.

Thank you Mitch, I sure did take a LOT! 😲 I'm afraid not mate, I don't even have a back shed! 😪 Yeah, I read that you have a lot of camels there, and that there is even talk of culling the wild camels in the interior. I lived in the Middle East for 2 years, and only saw one camel :D

! Cool pic Jer! :D I found this old pair of dental pliers a few years back

Yeah, Lanzarote is the driest of the Canary Islands, with 3 1/2" of rain per year

Here is Wright's, in contrast

Sadly not :( I had hoped to do a Camel Bone SFO, and I don't think I have a single knife with it
Yeah I don't have a back shed anymore either.
Australia has the largest population of wild camels in the world, estimated of over a million
Even listed in the guiness world records.

First introduced in the 1840s, Afghan cameleers and camels were a large part of exploration of the interior of Australia. The Ghan train still travels roughly the original route from Adelaide to the Northern Territory.
Yep they can be culled, also being farmed for dairy and meat.
Good morning all. Just spent 20 minutes in post office waiting for clerk to figure out how to enter info for package going to Australia!!!

Bob I feel for you. Our local post office put a sign up before Christmas closed permanently, due to unforeseen circumstances....huh?
The PO in the next suburb over closed also about a month before ours. Yet they are all about quality of service and increasing parcel delivery service 🙄

It's a fascinating subject :) Yes, this is definitely not the thread, but have a look around, there are plenty of others, which are more appropriate
I just noticed you are a new member. Welcome to the thread. 👋
As others will tell you, it's good to go to page 1 and familiarize yourself with the true nature of this thread.

Bob
Great advice Bob. Thanks

Sorry to hear that mate, it's a terrible thing for a man to not have a shed 😢

Wow, I didn't realise the camel population was THAT big Mitch! Fascinating  I've you tasted the milk or the meat, I've eaten a lot of things, but not camel

Terrible! :( My local PO closed 20 years ago. They are closing all the time here :(
A different era back then mate, and all the best for the New Year. 🍾 🤝
Definitely Leon. Thanks mate, the same to you :)

Hope the new year is off to a good start for everyone. Chilly and gusty Wisconsin day today. BOB (bright orange ball) is nowhere to be found. Regular work day for me. Hope a few guardians were able to nab one of Eric’s blue rope lambs yesterday. Smooth stag lamb in the pocket.

Thanks Barrett.
I can't imagine the heart stopping feeling you had.😱 Glad it worked out and all had a good time.

It was not a good feeling, Bob. 😳 I think we got extremely lucky that things worked out the way they did. I got the names of two ladies who helped us out, and am overdue in writing some glowing praise to the theater.

Wow, I love a happy ending !

Me too, Steve! 🙂

Very cool Barrett. I really enjoy seeing the myriad venues and sites in your fine city. Wonderful pic of Miss Eleanor!

Thanks, Dwight! There’s definitely some cool history in Minneapolis, especially there along the river.

Good morning Guardians, Seems that was quite a storm we flew through last night! 😱 Storm Gerrit brought hail, thunder, lightning, 80mph winds, snow, torrential rain, power blackouts, and a tornado! The area we flew through was among the worst affected! There's more Weather to come over the next few days - what a welcome home! 🙄😱🥶

Wow, Jack! 😲 I’m glad you made it back on the ground safely!

My brain hurts every time I see that one. It can’t compute such beauty 🤣🤣

Steve, if you keep posting that one, we’re going to have to get Paul a supply of smelling salts. 😉😁

Good afternoon Guardians !

The last day of the year and it's finally looking like winter around here. We got about an inch or so of snow overnight buty the ice is still dangerously thin. Not good for all the ice fisherman.

I'm carrying Gidget today 👍

Happy New Year to those who are already in 2024 and Happy New Years eve to the rest of us !

Nice pics, Steve. The larger parts of Minnetonka still don’t have any ice! Definitely a first for January since we’ve lived here.

Happy New Year guardians!

Nice mod, Brian.

Happy New Year to all the participants in the Guardians thread.   🍾🍾🍾. Also Year of the Dragon, bit of useless info for you. 🐉🐉🐉🐲🐲🐲

Happy New Year to you, Leon. I knew it was the Year of the Dragon thanks a special package of Hershey’s chocolate I saw at Costco the other day. What mediocre American chocolate has to do with the Chinese New Year, I have no idea…

Well…..I am a full Apple convert. Never thought I would like a wrist computer but I love this thing. My wife gifted it to me for Christmas and now I don’t know how I resisted for so long. Like I told Pete….Skynet is taking over 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

My wife loves her Apple Watch, but I’ve passed on getting one for myself. I’m content with my normal old analog watch that just tells the time. 😉

Enjoying New Years Eve with the family. It also happens to be my oldest son’s Birthday. Took him to see Ferrari at the theater. What a cool movie about a very interesting man. Took him to eat at the Japanese grill after. I am a sucker for some hibachi!!!!

Now we are just sitting around and enjoying each other’s company until the ball drop. Wife picked out some pink moscato champagne for the toast. Never had it but I despise Champagne so hopefully it is better😂😂.

That sounds great, Paul. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a good hibachi place. I hope y’all had a nice New Year celebration.

Evening all
Kristy had to go to the Cafe, to start getting things prepared for reopen in a couple of days. Got me to go along and top soil the plants and feed them.
So I thought I'd take you along!

Looks like a nice spot, Mitch.

I've also enjoyed every season of Fargo, it always reminds me of btb01 btb01 and herder ! 😆;)

Oh, you betcha, yah. 😁 It’s fun being an outsider here, I get to appreciate all the Fargo-like accents the locals say they don’t have. 😉 When my brother and I were at the Vikings game on Christmas Eve, we were enjoying the guys complaining behind us every time the referee threw a “flayg.” 🤣

Julie and I are a few episodes behind on Fargo right now.

I am just giving my arthritic thumbs a break from editing my photos, while I wait for Wolfie to come round to collect his kids' presents  This is actually a postcard from the Timanfaya National Park. Hard to believe that, just over a week ago, I was leading a camel train across the Volcanic terrain. Camels are great beasts of burden in low-water environments, but they are very truculent animals. Even though they are universally known as camels in the Canary Islands, the beasts are in fact dromedaries, the first of which arrived on Lanzarote more than 200 years ago. If there'd been anything else to do at this stage on our tour, (as the website had promised), I would probably have forsaken a ride, and hung onto my 22 Euros, but the website lied, and we were frog-marched onto the camels, who must earn their owners a small fortune. Travellers are seated on either side of the dromedaries single hump, and I ended up with a pleasant, but very chatty, young divorcee, called Vicky, whose two damaged children rode on the camel behind. Being as Vicky was a fraction of my weight, they had to load her seat up with ballast, which they did very discreetly I thought :D The other four-legged animals were all female, but each 'train' is led by a male. Vicky ascertained that our camel was called 'Abdul'. Abdul seemed rather disinterested in his work, but reluctantly lurched into the air, with his passengers clinging on. Being at the front meant I got the least interesting photographs unfortunately, and Vicky (bless her), chattered throughout, apparently not having had an adult conversation for some time. Abdul plodded along the short, circular route, which took less than ten minutes to complete, but at one point, he stopped, and lowered his head, swaying, as if he was going to lie down again. This put us in quite a precarious position, and Vicky was already panicking. It was undoubtedly an extremely foolish gamble, but I assertively commanded Abdul "Hut! Hut!" Incredibly, it worked, and he commenced his slow march. Vicky was amazed, and asked where I had learned the trick. I told her, truthfully, I had seen it in Lawrence of Arabia! :D Thankfully, it went well, and I was spared being pictured on the front of the next day's Lanzarote Gazette, with a headline reading something like: "CAMEL TRAIN RUNS AMOK! Mad Yorkshireman Charged With Recklessness While in Charge of a Camel!"

ofIog7I.jpg

Sounds like you had quite an adventure with the camels, Jack. 😁 The camel business must be pretty lucrative; when Eleanor rode one at the zoo on her birthday a couple years back, I think it was $8 and the ride lasted about a minute. 🙄

Unless Barrett is posting pizza pics, it's rare that I have cravings, but when I do, I usually give into them. I can't remember the last time I made chicken fried rice, but that's what I'm having now. Made it extra spicy! 😋🥵

Sounds tasty, Jack!

I've eaten a lot of things, but not camel

I’d stick with chicken fried rice, personally. 🤣

(Had to split my post in two. I’ve seen the warning before about no more than 20 photos in a post, but I think this was the first time the forum reprimanded me for trying to make a post with more than 10,000 characters. I even edited some text out of some of the quotes, but it didn’t make a difference.)

For lunch today, I finished off the last of the pulled pork I made for Christmas Day. (We had six adults and three kids, so I smoked two 9 pound pork butts. We ended up with a lot leftover.) 😁

I’d been meaning to try this Arthur Bryant’s BBQ sauce for a while now, and of course I had to put it up against my old favorite, Gate’s Extra Hot, for a Kansas City showdown.

I’ve gotta say, I don’t really get all the hype around this one. I know Arthur Bryant’s is a KC institution, and I’m sure the meat is good there, but the sauce just doesn’t do anything for me. The flavor is odd, and unlike any BBQ sauce I’ve ever had before. Honestly it doesn’t even taste like BBQ sauce. It’s lacking any sweetness (I’m not looking for a sugary BBQ sauce, but this one needs something). There’s also no hint of spice/heat, and I found the texture unpleasant and sort of gritty. Sadly, this one won’t be getting the Guardians of the Condiments seal of approval, at least not from me.

My Albers Katalox has been in my pocket for most of the holidays. I think it was unhappy about being beat out for my KOTY by its Afzelia Burl brother. 🤣

Happy New Year all!

Been slacking off on my Guardian duties of late...My work life has been kicking me around the block!

Needless to say, my trusty EDC has been...

I hope there is light at the end of that work tunnel. Very handsome lamb today.👍🏻

Always good to know what is not up to porch standards Barrett.
Meal does look delicious in spite of substandard sauce.
As for your KOTY, you did have a tough decision, though I agree with your final choice.👌

A friend of ours gave us a bottle of Arthur Bryant's last year, and we were pretty underwhelmed by it - I think most of it is still in our fridge, and I'm not sure when we'll ever use it up.
