There must be a story behind Brookes dying in the paupers' looney bin.
I carry a lambsfoot...

...to, among other things, slit the crusts of my pies.
How 'bout you?
Thanks, Jack. It's frozen, but I'm going to eat it with homemade mashed potatoes with plenty of butter! Debating whether to have a glass of water with it or a beer.Great-looking pie my friend![]()

Because sometimes it's the only way I can open a bag of liquorice!

According to the good Prof. Tweedale, the company had its roots in the activities of John Brookes (1825-1865), the son of Jonathan Brookes, a cutler living in Broomhall Street, Sheffield.
I couldn't "like" that. Poor fellow. He died from 'apoplexy and chronic disease of the brain'. He didn't leave a lot of money - under £800 - but that would have scarcely made him a pauper in those days![]()
I'm guessing water, at this hour, and you a responsible respectable galoot..Debating whether to have a glass of water with it or a beer.![]()

That was wonderful Jack, thank you for taking the time to post it!
And oh, I don't know about sausage rolls, but I used to get sausages in batter at that Greek Fish n Chips by the Ladbroke Grove Tube Station.

I think the difference between our meat pot pies and the meat pies of Britain is that ours are soupy and theirs have gelatinned stock instead of soup, allowing a blockier shape and picnic portability. I'm lazy, but I think I have to get out my Jane Garmey Great British Cooking A Well-kept Secret, unfurl my apron, and have at it.
And why is it so long since I had hot dogs incised for cheese and wrapped in crescent roll dough?

Pics to come. Featuring lambsfoots.
[Edited to change my beverage prophecy; I'm just sensing water now.]

Yep, went with the water for now.
Not an English pie, but on an English plate with an English knife!

Thanks for that Jack. Like most history, it's both interesting and sad, all at the same time.
