I've had classic chip butties - white bread, hot fries, butter. I've had them with wheat and sourdough; I've added mayo or mustard or cheese or bacon; I've made them with sweet potato fries or tater tots; i almost always add either A1 or HP Sauce, depending on which one I have handy. All of these are pretty dang good. (I think this week's butties will be with tater tots and Henderson's - not sure what bread we'll use yet.)
I have never put ketchup on one, but I'm not much of a ketchup fan.

I like ketchup on chips and fries, (and sausage/bacon sammiches), but I think that if you are making a chip butty for the first time, you need to appreciate it, as it is meant to be, with proper chips, and only salt and vinegar, at most. it was on account of me being a smart ass and not getting off at paddington station where our airbnb was. i didnt know there was a difference in the line and the station!
I used to stay round there quite a bit in the 70's Jack. Travelling is often affected by the unexpected!
