An age-old story of man's inhumanity to manMy girlfriend's father's family fled to Cuba to escape the horrors of the Spanish civil war. A generation later her father, with his wife and infant daughter (my girlfriend's older sister) fled back to Spain to escape the horrors of the Cuban revolution. Fearing a further revolution in Spain upon the demise of Francisco Franco, he left Spain for Miami, FL, USA. Though he barely spoke English at the time, he secured a position at Anheuser-Busch as a delivery driver and worked his way up to a fleet supervisor position from which he eventually retired.
Before escaping to Spain, his family was stripped of all property and possessions by Fidel Castro's illegitimate and barbaric regime, and his father (a policeman under the former regime) was imprisoned - his profession being his only crime.
During his first escape attempt, engine problems struck their boat and he and four others were arrested, imprisoned, and tortured in the murderous Che Guevara's "La Cabaña" prison, a converted Spanish Fortress on one end of Havana Bay, in "El Morro" the even older, and even more inhospitable, Spanish fortress on the other side of the harbor, and various other unsavory locations spread over the majority of the country.
We hang out a lot - shooting pool, going bowling, or just sitting, talking, and drinking coffee. Today, we were talking about pocket knives and I brought up the lambsfoot pattern. He was unfamiliar, asked to see one - and I asked to take a pic. He agreed.
Here y'all go:

I moved the snow last night and this morning. I don't do it more than once in a day unless I fear it will rise up and overwhelm me. Tomorrow I'll get out and do it again before work.
About 40 years ago, I lived in an apartment in Sheffield, and twice, I had water coming through the bathroom ceiling, because the guy upstairs had let the bath overflow. He was a short, round, jolly man, and when he apologised, it was impossible to get angry with him. Later, I learned that he had been badly tortured under Pinochet's regime, and was actually quite famous because of it, so I was glad I didn't shout at himThank you, Duncan! He's definitely seen a lot and talking to him is certainly educational - and entertaining! He used to present a fairly stern disposition but he's become quite the comedian in his later years!![]()
Captured nicely WillI'm certain he'd be interested in learning about New Zealand as well - another island with a complex, tumultuous, and sometimes bloody past!
Here's another shot of the knife - minus those distracting, hard-worn hands!

Good evening, guardians. We pruned and juiced the fruit of our calamansi trees. I made a nice cocktail out of some frozen juice and some English gin.
Looking good Mitch
Not losing your marbles, you just have a slow leakGood morning Guardians, I nearly forgot to say Hi! Losing my marbles rapidly!I hope everyone is well, and that your week has been good, or at least tolerable. Mine has been quiet, not too much work on, and if I didn't have a dressing stapled to the middle of my forehead, I might have gone somewhere, or done something interesting
I think I'm going to be having a quiet weekend too, as I feel a bit like a dog, with one of those plastic 'cones' around its neck!
Really enjoying Charlie's new Lambsfoot, and hope to get some better pics of it, at some point, preferably while it still has the etch
Have a good Friday Guardians, and I hope you are looking forward to the weekend

Spent this Friday evening sitting down with my father in law knocking out the final details of our fishing trip together in the NT next month over a few red wines. Hopefully barramundi, mud crabs and who knows what else to come!
At one point Hannah said “hang on, he’s my dad why is he taking you for a holiday instead of me?”

I haven't eaten yet. This would probably be as good a day as I'm going to get before Wednesday to have my bloodwork done. On the other hand, my doctor won't kill me if I show up with bloodwork still pending.
I'll see how I feel after snow-blowing.
[I'll eat. A1C doesn't need fasting, and if there's more, I have another arm for later.]

I don't know what possessed me, except it was free. I got a self-medical test through work, which came with a device for sawing off my own arm. They didn't like that blood sample, so they sent me another kit without asking me.I had to give some yesterday. They never get back to me with the results. Probably a case of 'No news is good news', but with the current state of the NHS, who knows![]()
I'm glad to hear that you've had a more relaxing week . Have a great day
Great picture of that beauty !
Great picture buddy !
Looks great! While I reached my quota in my mid-twenties and now abstain from alcohol - I would certainly slurp up all that Calamansi juice, minus The Queen's Tears, of course!View attachment 2790097

BeautifulGood Friday morning to you. It’s not light here but it’s getting there. Yesterday we had a lot of needed rain. And when there was a break in the rain yesterday I found some mossy rocks for some knife pics. But this morning for no reason whatsoever I was thinking of UK cuisine I have never partaken in. For some odd reason Welsh Rarebit came to mind. A simple dish pretty close to the center of my Venn Diagram of unhealthy food I would really like. And now I’m thinking of the Galloping Gourmet, Graham Kerr and his cooking show way back when. He loved Spotted Dick. Maybe I’ll have a Chip Butty today.

Very interesting WillLooks great! While I reached my quota in my mid-twenties and now abstain from alcohol - I would certainly slurp up all that Calamansi juice, minus The Queen's Tears, of course!
I think I've mentioned it before but I grow, what I call, Calamondins - which turned out, upon further research, to be the exact same species as Calamansi. For some reason, when they first began to be imported to the US (I believe at least partially through the effort of David Fairchild as two of the original imported specimens still grow, AFAIK, on the property of the Vizcaya estate - the former home of Fairchild's friend, James Deering, of the Deering-McCormick-International Harvester fortune) the name "Calamondin" stuck in this small regional bubble. Now that the rest of the world seems to call them "Calamansi," we down here in South Florida just sound like a bunch of weirdos.
I've eaten these things my whole life as my parents also had a tree due to their home being built by another local horticulturist, who I also believe was friends with Mr. Fairchild and likely also received a specimen from that original import - and if you don't know, let me tell you - they are very, very tart! Tart may even be an understatement. Sour might be more accurate. But here's the thing - I recently discovered that, unlike mandarins that have the majority of their sweetness and acidity nicely balanced within the meat of the fruit itself, Calamondins (or Calamansi) sequester all of their acidity within the meat and all their sweetness in the peel!!! Since acquiring this knowledge, I now just pop the whole thing in my mouth, peel and all, and it's a much more pleasant and balanced experience than eating the interior on it's own as one would do with the majority of common citrus fruits!![]()
Thank you DavidHope your day goes well Jack![]()
