My girlfriend's father's family fled to Cuba to escape the horrors of the Spanish civil war. A generation later her father, with his wife and infant daughter (my girlfriend's older sister) fled back to Spain to escape the horrors of the Cuban revolution. Fearing a further revolution in Spain upon the demise of Francisco Franco, he left Spain for Miami, FL, USA. Though he barely spoke English at the time, he secured a position at Anheuser-Busch as a delivery driver and worked his way up to a fleet supervisor position from which he eventually retired.
Before escaping to Spain, his family was stripped of all property and possessions by Fidel Castro's illegitimate and barbaric regime, and his father (a policeman under the former regime) was imprisoned - his profession being his only crime.
During his first escape attempt, engine problems struck their boat and he and four others were arrested, imprisoned, and tortured in the murderous Che Guevara's "La Cabaña" prison, a converted Spanish Fortress on one end of Havana Bay, in "El Morro" the even older, and even more inhospitable, Spanish fortress on the other side of the harbor, and various other unsavory locations spread over the majority of the country.
