Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

A ho-hum photo from me today:

Also, I am a bit heartbroken. I discovered a crack that goes all the way through and 1/4 way across the width of the tang:

dKNFgMb.jpeg

No doubt this is related to my habit of letting the blade snap close.

I have had this knife for less than 3 weeks, but I have carried it every day and it has grown on me very quickly. Will it crack more? If so, can I repair it?

Tough break, but my two cents… that crack was probably there from production. The way it’s darker inside the crack looks like it has some scale from heat treating left in the crack. I could be incorrect or just seeing the picture wrong, but I’d expect a crack from use to still be clean and shiny-ish inside.

If it were me, I’d probably just continue to use it and see what happens. Worst case, it’s an excuse to buy a new knife if it breaks 😁

Bummer, maybe contact the seller and see if he'll replace it.
You beat me.
Shouldn't be happening, get a replacement. You will always worry about it .
Good luck 👍

How can you tell that it goes all the way through? No possibility it could just be on the surface and wraps around?

I generally let all my knives snap closed, except the finicky hothouse-flower French ones, and I've not experienced blades cracking. I think there may yet be doubt that the practice and the crack are related.

From the little I know of steel, a few things could happen:

- It could remain just as it is.
- It could fail catastrophically in use, especially if the flaw runs through the whole tang, or is indicative of a less than ideal heat treat.
- The increased surface area and unpolished surface within the crack could promote corrosion which would structurally weaken the area gradually until it failed catastrophically in use.

If it were me, and the manufacturer wouldn't replace, I think I'd try to determine how deep the flaw ran exactly and let those findings dictate how I used the knife going forward. Maybe some gentle polishing of the area in question would reveal more detail.

I agree with the other Guardians Adam, contact the seller. That crack didn't come from snapping the knife closed, Stan Shaw used to berate anyone he saw NOT closing a knife like that!
Snowing all day. Real heavy slushy stuff too. Cant wait for it to get warm. Last work night this week and got the 93 tonight.

Hope Spring comes soon buddy, and that you enjoy your break :)

Good morning Guardians, pretty busy right now, but I'll try to call in at the market if I get time. I expect a whiney phonecall from Tool Man at some point  Hope everyone has a good day

Unfortunately, the crack is visible on three sides of the tang:

The third item you mentioned did not occur to me yesterday. If I don't try to have the knife replaced then an attempt at repair should be tried in my opinion. In this case, I am not sure it is worth the effort to have it replaced.

I do agree that snapping the knife shut did not cause the crack. It merely helped to expose the flaw in the tang. It is good to know this is a very uncommon event.

With some of the rubbish coming out of that factory, it's easy to see how that would get out the door. I'd still contact your vendor Adam
Fine pic of your Ebony '18 Jer
Good day Jack,

Thank you Bob, I hope you had a successful day yourself my friend
That a smasher! :)

Thanks Steve, I had about 45 minutes! :D
Good morning, Guardians! Thanks to my brilliant guess in Generous Bob’s count-the-steel-balls contest, my 🐑’s now have a lovely new Gerstner barn complete with mirrored rooftop salon for staging. Thanks again Rufus1949 Rufus1949 🥃View attachment 2824370

Looking good Steve, great pics :)
Nice :)
I’m looking forward to Jack’s Market Report. Maybe we’ll get a the classic picture of the Tool Man chomping down on a sandwich. In light of the Tool Man’s momentous return I took a picture of my lamb with mammoth covers.

Those covers are stunning! Great pic Kurt

Good evening Guardians, just coming up to 6pm here, and I'm hoping I've just knocked off work for the night! I got to the market about 11am or so, and while Tool Man said he had plenty of folks browsing his re-vamped, he hadn't had a single sale. I did ask how he managed to get set-up, and he told me, "Got Boring Ray to do it." I suspect that might be the future! :D Tool Man's short-sighted business plan basically involves selling off the family silver. I bought a couple of things off him, which put some money in his pocket, and also gave him a couple of knives, which he quickly made £70 on, which is more than he's taken in a long time! :D I showed him my FCB Lamb, which he was very impressed by, and I made sure it went back in my pocket afterwards! ;)
