Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Finally got a couple of new photos.

Here’s a Senator in all its fancy glory! The corners on the bolsters on this knife are crazy sharp and it felt like they were digging into a nerve in my palm. Rounded them out with a diamond stone and flitzed it all back to a nice polish. I can actually grip it now without wincing. Ready for a patina!

Well this thread continues to chug along, doesn't it? 'Tis a good thing.

I've never used this function of Google Maps, but maybe it'll work for this?

Guardian's of the Lambsfoot THE MAP

For those of you who only specified "Northern California" or "South Texas", I just dropped the pin wherever. If you want something more accurate, let me know. (If not, that's completely understandable, too. :D) And of course, any other Guardians who want to be added to the list, give me a location (as general or specific as you'd like) and I'll add you to the map.

Nice idea, Barrett. You can put me down over Salem, Oregon.

Am enjoying a tasty beverage a bit early, not the easiest work day. Cigar might have to wait though, the rain apparently decided it was time.

^ That's a real nice one. Looks especially rich - maybe a rain enhancement. Ebony?

Thanks for the map Barrett, pin me down in Texarkana AR. SW corner of AR.

I keep clicking on your link to the map, but it just takes me to my google map app. Don't see any pins. Am I doing something wrong, Barrett?

Last time I did a "comprehensive" post here was Saturday, and I was flabbergasted to find I was something like 15 pages behind! Inconceivable!!:rolleyes: In my last major post I limited myself to 2018 GELFs; here I think I'll feature only horn lambsfoots (hereafter abbreviated HLF), since that's what I'm carrying this week. ;) (it's ALL about ME. :() I picked out these posts this afternoon, and thought I responded to them right away, but discovered after supper tonight that I hadn't replied at all!:thumbsdown:

[ALERT]HLF EXCEPTION!!
I'm already breaking my rule, because I tend to enjoy the "I carry a lambsfoot" series that Greg (@WhittlinAway) started, and Vince has a really cool one here with the Spam double entendre!:cool::D
Jack's is also very clever in its use of the mountain climber's raison d'être.:thumbsup::p
Good morning, Guardians! Must start the day out right.

How 'bout you?
I carry a Lambsfoot...

Because it's there! ;)

How 'bout you?

[/ALERT]

Yeah, my old man was a life-long chess obsessive, so I remember it well!...
I'm not chess-obsessive, and I'm not a good player, but I've certainly spent lots of time reading chess books, playing games, etc. I could see myself devoting some time to chess a couple of times per week in my Golden Years. ;)

Gary I was not a baseball player or any other sport either! I went to work when I was 14 delivering papers after school. I mowed lawns in the summer. When I was in high school I worked in the afternoon and on weekends in a grocery store! Did I mention how much I am enjoying my retirement!!! ;) Actually this beautiful Jet Black beauty came from Jack! His back was hurting back several years ago and he gave me this Lambsfoot to make it feel better!!!;):D
Hint: emphasis on the word hurting!
I had forgotten all about that GAW, and that you had won it, Ron (even though I entered and even made some suggestions about what had helped me with back ailments)! Congrats, again!:cool::cool::) When I was young, my brothers and I always had chores before and after school and lots of farm work on weekends and through the summer, but our Dad would let us play in a weekly church league for kids one evening a week. And my grade school had 3 recesses each day IIRC, and we'd play softball at each one until the snow got too deep, and then we'd throw snowballs all winter to keep our arms in shape, I guess!

That ebony knife is cracker, too, Gary.
Well said, and I'm a sucker for Ebony.
Thanks for the ebony enthusiasm, Vince and John. :)

Thanks for all the kind words GT :) I learned to drive in a LHD Willis Jeep with a broken hand-brake :D Hey, you're right about odd numbered waist sizes, I remember moving up to a 31", and then later a 33". I'm up to an even 38" now! But hoping to move down to a 36" :D ;) Great-looking '18 GELF my friend :D :)
...
Jack, I appreciate your always humoring my random musings. :)

...
I think your dad might be right, GT! :D The last summer we lived in Arizona, we had the hottest day we'd experienced since we'd been there: 120°F. I remember being disappointed because the forecast had called for 123°F.
...
I don't want to get reprimanded for not posting any Lambsfoot content, so here's my Ashley's Choice along with my new Big 'Un that Jack recently gifted me.

L09U1Ob.jpg

That Big 'Un is a prime example of what Jack was saying about Wright's only putting the premium horn on the mark side of the knife, and not bothering to even attempt matching the pile side. While that mark side horn is a lovely creamy caramel, the back side is just plain black. :D
I have to agree with you, Barrett, that a high of 123˚ has much more "sequential cachet" than does 120˚.
Congrats on the big HLF; the mark side horn certainly has alluring figuring!:cool::thumbsup:

Both have a delightful silky smoothness. :)

View attachment 1053264
@herder, your HLF is as sweet and intoxicating as your caramel! ;):cool:

LOL! :D Thanks GT, I have certainly made plenty of ERRORS of judgement - sometimes I've even gotten some exercise out of that! :D

Another great pic of Cracker Jack my friend
Cracker Jack thanks you for the prize compliment, Jack. :) So there have been incidents in your life, too, that included someone yelling, "Run for it, boys!" :D:thumbsup::rolleyes:

A few size/weight pictures...
Xz1NRZy.jpg
Thanks for those cool comparisons among your new old lambsfoot, your AC, and this finely-feathered HLF!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

That's refreshing in a time where the internet meme is seen as useful communication.
I thank you for your time and energy in digging up the history and passing it along. My love of knives is more of a hobby and an interest, not so much a passion. But it's very enjoyable for me to see people poor themselves into their passions with integrity. Keep up the noble work.
Saturday, we had dinner at the house of married friends of my daughter, and at one point we were discussing Thinking, Fast and Slow by Kahneman, a book really relevant to John's first remark.
And I second everything John says in his second paragraph! Thanks, Jack and other impassioned knife nuts on The Porch!:thumbsup::cool::)

...
Thanks GT, not been a tractor rally for awhile now. :( Sounds like you had a much larger farm than ours . Two tractors (plus the combine) sufficed for harvest of arable crops. Though as late as the 1960's my dad (and many farms in general) would harvest the grass crop the old fashioned way. The crop would be forked into a hay wain, then that would pull up beside the steam powered thresher. They then stood on top of the thresher and forked it into the top.
Oh and in answer to your lettuce query.
Errr....no.... :D
...
No lettuce with your pork pies? Pity. ;) I've found myself eating far more sliced/diced vegetables since I became enamored with pocket knives!:p
My Dad bought our farm from his father, and it was originally 160 acres (a quarter-section, a fairly common farm size in the Midwest US originally). We used to rent land from an old man in our church who had a farm about 2 miles from ours but didn't farm it himself anymore. Eventually, my Dad bought a second, smaller, farm only about a mile from our farmstead, so he had a total of 300 acres. The method for "making hay" you describe was something my Dad did when he was a kid, but I never saw anything but hay baled in the field and carried to the barn.

(I have to split my post; sorry for the verbosity. :()

What I can't tolerate is when they put the nice stuff on the pile side. I've got a Case with very nice pile side stag and a very smooth and plain mark side. That always makes me scratch my head and wonder why they'd do that, especially on a knife with a shield. Probably because it's easier to set a shield in smooth material... Lazy Buggers :D
I wonder if this is a matter of different tastes between you and the cutler, John. My AC lambsfoot (and most of the others in that run) has quite different types of stag on the two sides, and I much prefer the gnarly, groovy, popcorn stag on the pile side, but I'm sure there are plenty of folks who'd prefer the smoother, more uniformly colored stag on the mark side.

...
Mentioned I was going to a hockey game last night. [Although knives were not allowed at the game, there will be knife content.] It was a blast. My daughter enjoys the hockey games much more than the baseball....May the puck be with you!
Glad you and your daughter had a great time, Vince, and thanks for the pics and detailed report!:cool::thumbsup: Not a huge hockey fan myself (probably because of the fights), and when it comes to sporting event "entertainment", I'm an old fuddy-duddy: Shut up (and kill the ear-shattering music), quit messing around, and let me watch THE GAME - stay off my lawn while you're at it!:thumbsdown::rolleyes:

...
Plenty of good tacos around these parts but, ya know, I can't find a proper meat pie to save my life.
...
High in iron, that's for sure. :D
Those tacos were so good I had to go and get more yesterday....and I might go today too, different taco truck though because variety is the spice of life.:D
"GELF", I like it! Soon we will need a Guardian's glossary thread. :D
...
Yeah, I suppose ALL knives are nutritious in the high-iron sense! :p:thumbsup::thumbsup:
GELF = Guardians ebony lambsfoot
AC = Ashley's Choice
HLF = horn lambsfoot (at least in this post)
But I'm not really excited about 2017/2018 GHLF = 2017/2018 Guardians horn lambsfoot, or various things I've tried so far for rosewood lambsfoots, or different sizes, etc. Although in the near future, I hope to use GILF = Guardians ironwood lambsfoot! :D:thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:

[ALERT]HLF EXCEPTION!!
Just because of "old friend" lambsfoots with names that inspired me!:cool::cool:

Betty rode shotgun today.

Old Black Betty. Bam-ba-Lamb!! :D
Good to see you've got your bearings. ;)

A blast from the past, a pic of Rosie. Waaaaaay back in '17.:D

"Goodbye to Rosie, the queen of Corona":cool::thumbsup:
I've never seen this awesome video before!! Amazing cameos by "famous" people, and some of the kids in the schoolyard are awesome performers!:eek::thumbsup::thumbsup::D

GT, you have a good eye, my friend - that’s the same knife I picked out, back when I was visiting Sheffield.
...
Is that also the one that went missing for a time, Chin?? Enjoyed your hot pepper pics!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thank you very much Mark, I took advantage of this piece of street furniture ;) ...
3Wa1f9I.jpg

Oops! Posted the wrong pic!
At first, I thought the chair was a psychedelically upholstered left-over from the 1960s, and couldn't see how it could survive outside in the weather for so long. Eventually I realized that it's all tile and grout - really quite impressive!!:thumbsup::cool::p

Love that chair! Reminds me of some furniture I surprised my wife with when we were newly married. (Never surprised her with furniture again!)
:p:thumbsup:

Some would call that kitsch!
Je ne parle pas allemand. ;)
So cute! :D...
I enjoyed this exchange, although my bilingual daughter with a little knowledge of French had to explain it to me! ;):cool::thumbsup: Very clever, Vince! :D:D

...
Prester John Prester John : I also meant to add my experience to your earlier question about horn as a cover material.

The weather here rarely drops below 0C/32f, with wet winters, and hot dry summers with usually a lot of days around 30C/85f, and a handful of days each year getting up to around 42C/108f. Although I have felt tiny dimensional changes over the time I’ve had the horn Guardians knife, and my golden Ox horn Lambsfoot knife, both of them are currently perfectly flush, as they were when they were new.

All I’ve done to treat them is apply a bit of mineral oil according to the old woodworkers’ rule of “once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year, and once a year for life”.

Now, if I happen to have mineral oil left on my hands after oiling another knife, instead of wiping it off with a rag, I just wipe it on one of my horn handled knives.

...
Thanks for your thoughts (and lovely pics) on the care of horn handles, Chin!:thumbsup::cool: I really wish I had seen that bolded, easy-to-remember advice earlier! ;):thumbsup:

Thanks, Chin. I may get a horn knife some day and see how it does. They do look nice.
Do it, Vince!:thumbsup: You're on the Gulf Coast and quite humid, right? I think that would be perfect for horn handles (but I'm not a horn expert, and don't even play one on TV )!

[ALERT]HLF EXCEPTION!!

Welcome to a new recruit to the Guardians of the Lambsfoot!! Congrats, John, and you sure have Jack accurately pegged!!:cool::thumbsup::)
I carry a Lambsfoot...

Because Jack is a very generous man!!!

I couldn't wait to post that
Jack, thank you so very much. I am so excited to get to know my new Lambsfoot knife. First impressions are wonderful, now I get why everybody is so fond of them. It is a little pocket-sized BEAST of a knife. You can tell these were meant to be used. Thanks again for the very generous gift. I will be sure to post reviews in the coming days as I get to know my new knife better. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I keep clicking on your link to the map, but it just takes me to my google map app. Don't see any pins. Am I doing something wrong, Barrett?

I’ve only been working with it on my computer so far, so I just played around on my phone to see if I could figure it out. If I just click on the link, it does exactly what you’re saying, redirects to the Google Maps app, no pins or anything. If, instead, I copy the link, open a new browser window, paste it there and go, it keeps the map open in the browser and I can see the pins/info. I would give that a try.

(It may also be accessible in the Google Maps app if you click the three lines to the left of the search bar, then click “Your Places,” then “Maps”, but no promises. I think that depends a lot on your Google login being synched between your browser and Maps app.)

I had the same problem on my iPad, but the link worked fine on my PC. I solved it by doing this. Open your google app on your iPad, copy this link into the web address minus the ()marks, (https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1qlqB0gllY9N1yOFGKmqalS0nCIHmFS-j&hl=en_US&ll=42.113768966793934,-62.34038955&z=2) it will open to the map then you can save it as a favorite. I hope this helps.

For those of you who only specified "Northern California" or "South Texas", I just dropped the pin wherever. If you want something more accurate, let me know. I initially preferred the pile side stag of my AC, but have come to love the mark side too.

It worked fine on my desktop, though. But I often read the forum on my phone.
