Paul I was thinking of your shadow in bone with the great jigging. One of the reasons I wanted a shadow right there. That is a sweet lamb, Kurt. Hard to beat a shadow lamb and I know first hand how well Cosimo constructs his shadow pattern knives. Congrats my friend.
Happy birthday Jack! I very much enjoyed the tour, and hope that you did even more!I just realised I never concluded my birthday road-trip! Sorry Guardians
It was my 64th birthday, and we drove south across the North Yorkshire Moors, with Wolfie fidgeting about in the back of the car, like a worm on a pin. Even though we arranged the itinerary a couple of months back, and he'd even booked Sunday lunch for 1pm, SWMBO clearly had a hair or nail appointment, or probably nothing at all. Matt had already told me he'd been petitioning for an early return, and so I teased with the idea of some new diversion along the way.

It was still only 10.30am, so we stopped in the old market town of Pontefract, and had a coffee in the station, at the southern terminus of the North York Moors Steam Railway. Wolfie bought a couple of gifts, his thumbs leaving his mobile phone for a few seconds.

Wolfie went missing again before we left Pontefract, and turned up 10 minutes later, with his phone burning his ear, and a pitiful look on his face. We set off to Malton, where we were lunching. Wolfie started mumblin that maybe we could get served an hour early, which neither Matt nor I wanted. The restaurant was busy, and I didn't think he'd a chance, but he humiliated himself anyway. With an hour to kill, we had a stroll around the pretty town, and then me and Matt had a pint, while Wolfie sipped a soda water.
Malton has seen some gentrification over the past decade, but they still have a weekly cattle market.

This is the old Shambles (a place for the cutting up of meat), which slopes down to the market square from the cattle market.

Bang on 1.00pm, we crossed the market square to the restaurant. Wolfie, who earns twice what I earn, and whose missus earns 5 times as much, hadn't had his wallet out all weekend. I doubt he'd spent Β£20. I said I'd pay again, which allowed me to order the dearest bottle of red on the (not particularly good) wine list, and saved any embarrassing stinginess with the bill. Matt had a small glass of wine, but for some reason Wolfie wouldn't have a sip. The Sunday roasts were HUGE, and accompanied by all manner of side dishes, it really was a feast, and there was certainly enough food for six. The bill was about Β£120, and Wolfie generously offered to get the tip, but then did exactly what he did after my birthday dinner last year, and threw in a measly fiver, before bolting out the door![]()

Thank you very much my friendAs others have said, happy belated birthday, Jack! Iβm annoyed with myself for not remembering on the day, or, more accurately, with my phone for not reminding me, as I have it in my calendar.

Hope you enjoyed your trip. Thanks for taking us along with you and sharing all the great pics! Sounds like Wolfie may be deserving of a not-particularly-flattering Leeds-market-style nickname.![]()
