Guardians of The Lambsfoot!

Have a fine Valentines Day, Guardians!

Nothing better on Valentines Day than Roses.

Thanks for the input, gents! I've done another mockup with your suggestions in mind. (I included a few other "bonuses" that I think will be good selling points, as well.)

If that knife ain't cool, I don't know what is!

Jack, I'll keep an eye on my inbox for an official Guardians Expulsion Notification. :D
It may be heresy to many, but it would probably be quite practical. Just do away with the thumb stud.

Did I compare the speed of this thread to an express train?

I’ll need to amend that to a Lambsfoot Space Shuttle knife engaging its hyperdrive engines and launching into warp space!

Have we really clocked up 75 pages since the start of this month?!

Ok, a bit of quick catchup first:

Donn and Jack: I thoroughly enjoyed your conversation about Stanage Edge. Is that where those abandoned millstones were quarried from, Jack? I remember you saying they were gritstone.

@donn : Yes Toyotas are definitely the 4WD of choice here in Australia, mostly Hiluxes, Landcruisers and Troopys. Nissan (Patrols) come a distant second, and anything else is usually seen either as a quirky affectation, or unfit for real off road conditions. Range Rovers and Discoverys are called ‘Toorak Tractors’ after the affluent suburb ‘over the wrong side of the Yarra’ river.

Land Rovers were very common on farms though when I was a kid. Who doesn’t love a 4WD with firing ports thoughtfully provided for both the driver and passenger under the front windscreen?!

GT @5K Qs : no worries about being a reluctant Food Correspondent, my friend, we come here to enjoy ourselves, so I’m sure someone else will pick up the mantle, in time.

But did you just say that, then launch straight into a detailed description of your elaborate and tasty sounding breakfast makins’? LOL! I’m glad to see your OJ seems to be finding its way into your cereal these days, instead of your coffee cup!;)

@Mescladis : I hope your thumb heals quickly. I agree, cuts from really sharp blades seem to knit together much more swiftly than ragged cuts from dull knives. That’s very interesting, what you were saying about the taste of carbon steel blade residue on food. I understand the part of the brain which has to do with scent and taste tends to be heavier (presumably from more neural activity) and more developed in women than it is in men, on average. The only time I can really notice it myself is on red onions.

Barrett @btb01 : Oh I’m still laughing, my friend, what a great design! While I’m glad to see you’ve included a tasteful radioactive puke green blade stamp, you may have overlooked that your knife would therefore be legally classified as a Zombie-Foot Knife - and I believe they have laws to deal with such travesties in the UK! And where’s the combo-edge serrations! Get with it, man!:D;):)

Every one of these Ironwood Lambsfoot knives shown so far, has been absolutely amazing to look at. As they’ve been rolling into the thread courtesy of their new owners, I’ve been studying the group pic like GT, and wondering which one of those left is my one.

In truth, the one that arrived in my mailbox this morning wasn’t one I had really studied that closely. (Like others here, I copied the group pics to the camera roll on my Ipad, so I could zoom in and scrutinise them in more detail!)
I had to actually identify its position by referring to the pile side, as the mark side appears very dark.

Here’s the mark side:
fDwFtHz.jpg

The dark burl actually has a beautiful, complex figuring to it, when you look into it.

If the mark side is to be looked ‘into’ to bring out its intricate detail, the pile side jumps straight out at you with its bold striping and lovely tawny red-gold shimmer.

jbImM4l.jpg

But look at both sides in the sunlight, and wow, that luminous shimmer is incredible!

I’ll comment a bit more on the knife itself later on - it’s late here now - but suffice to say I think this is the finest Guardians knife so far.

And I’ve found a place for the tin in my kit already, thanks for that Jack!

Oh, and my knife is just below Donn’s one, and above Prestons.

I've been receiving updates from Timothy La Combre about the custom knife I ordered from him. This morning he sent me pictures of the finished product. This is the first custom knife of my own design that I've ordered, and without a full schematic, I was expecting there to be some variation due to the nature of having Tim eyeball it and then figure out how to make it work. Plus, getting to collaborate on something unique was part of the fun in the first place.

I don't think he ended up getting the lambsfoot profile, but I do think he has made a beautiful knife that will be a workhorse. He mentioned that he double pinned the knife, pinning the liners first and then the scales. We ended up using all brass on the liners and bolster, and keeping the bolster smooth to stick with a more classic look. Ironwood ended up being the cover, and he found a really nice small piece of fine looking burlish wood that just barely fit. The shield was going to be too expensive since it would have to be outsourced, so I went without. The blade is M390, which he cold forged before doing his own heat treat. It looks really rustic, which I like. It is pinchable, so I went without the nick. I'll be interested to hear honest feedback from the Guardians about what you think.

Well-loved line-up Taylor

Lol... That would be one horrendous looking knife, but somebody would just "Have to have it!" :D

Wouldn't they just?!

Thanks Jack! They have made me feel better but not cured yet!

Hope you're back to dancing 'til dawn with your sweetheart soon Ron ;)

Some pile side love...super dark and dense grain on this side.

How do you spell "swoony" (where is @pertinux)?! ;)

I carry a Lambsfoot...

because it rocks!(probably been used before, but...)

I'm not sure it has been used before Preston :) Rock on my friend

Those could be some of the famous (Half) Blind Musicians of Sheffield Jer! ;)

Thanks, Guys! I keep trying to get a picture that accurately captures the colors, but the colors seem to change depending on the light. o_O
ua4Bwd7.jpg

Hard to capture the true beauty of the wood, but you've done well Rachel

I think that's right, the light used when photographing these great knives makes all the difference in the way they display the luminosity of the grain and colors. Ironwood is a great cover for any knife.

This is one of the reasons I like ironwood so much. Its character changes dramatically depending on the light. In mellow light it is richly colored, in sunlight it has chatoyance.

Agree completely. The quality of light and how any subject reflects that light is what I spend the most time on when taking a picture.

True Confession: I have never heard the word “chatoyance” before. After being introduced to it by @Pàdruig and a little research, I have added to my vocabulary and understanding. Thank you.

I think Cambertree Cambertree may have been the first to use the word here, I don't think I'd heard it before that myself

That's the Lambsfoot magic that GT and I were talking about.

That old Lambsfoot magic

Happy Valentine's Day, Guardians!

Dazzling and delightful Vince

This thread is singing right along lately...love seeing all the wonderful pics of the ironwood clad beauties! The Lambsfoot takes well to this attire! Well done Jack:thumbsup:

Thanks Duane, hope I'll be able to contribute some pics before too long

A well-guarded Lambsfoot Kevin, great pic my friend :)

Good morning, Guardians!
As I’ve been reading through your posts, I’ve seen many of you referring to Wright’s 2017 lambsfoot, or 2018 lambsfoot.
After browsing their own website and ..., I have seen no references to any yearly editors of any of Wright’s knives.
I apologise in advance if I’ve missed the information in earlier posts, but could you please let me know how I could get to know what the yearly editions are and how I could order one?
Also, I’d be interested in knowing what the differences are between a Wright’s Guardians’ Lambsfoot and their normal lambsfoot.
I am led to believe that the Guardians’ Lambsfoot is a special order, but I’d really welcome instructions on how (if at all possible) I might be able to get one.
Again, I’m sorry if my questions appear naive because I’ve missed something on the forum - I’m just really interested.
Many thanks to you all and have a lovely day! :)

@Rockeley Lad : these knives are specially ordered by Jack Black for the members of this thread (hence the name 'Guardians' Lambsfoot'). You can get added to the mailing list for next year's knife by sending a message to Jack Black Jack Black :)

You won't find any commercial discussion here either @Rockley Lad, and hopefully no references to dealers who do not contribute to BF. That's because both break the sub-forum guidelines. The Guardians Lambsfoot is an annual group buy for regular contributors here. To communicate privately here you will need to purchase a BF membership, which is inexpensive and very good value for money, in my opinion. That will allow you various privileges, including the ability to send and receive private messages

Good Morning Guardians

A Rosewood by any other name would not smell as sweet John ;)

That’s a beautiful knife. It must have been a hoot to collaborate with the maker. Features like the blade finish are part of what makes your Custom, unique. The wood covers are beautiful. Congratulations on a fine one of a kind knife.

It's clocking up some knots isn't it Chin? Those half-finished Millstone Grit grindstones can be found on Stanage and throughout that whole area, though most would have been intended for grinding flour rather than cutlery

You are right about the UK Zombie Knife Laws! Quite legal to buy a machete, just don't spray it green!

Those are beautiful photos of your knife my friend, really stunning :) I'm glad you like it, and that you've been able to put the tin to good use :)

Back at you, Vince, nice photo.
