What a collection is WORTH versus what was PAID for it you mean?
Is this before or after the current economic meltdown?
I’d say all these collections people brag about being able to sell for ‘more than they paid’ are now worth about the same as your average full size SUV.
The economy has been great for a couple decades now. Some of us remember how bad it used to be, and understand that spending $500 on a knife you don’t use, isn’t such a great idea. The bottom can fall out at any time.
I bet the high end, super indestructible, atom tough, can’t hurt ‘em , brands are handing out pink slips right now.
My collection cost me around $3500. It is worth a few hundred now, just like everyone elses. All my knives are mid to high end. No CRKT’s or Bucks.
I never bought these knives because they are ‘worth’ something. If I wanted that I would have bought gold.
I bought the knives because they suit a specific purpose, i.e. I use them, or I just like them. I have several folders that I use depending on my attire and situation.
I have several fixed blades because I keep a small survival kit in my truck, house, backpack, hiking-hunting kit. I never forget to add a knife, or anything else, because each kit has its own knife in it already. I can trust my life to any of these knives. Of course if I try to chop rocks with them, I am too stupid to survive anyway and I deserve to die.
The idea of a production knife, [or even semi/custom], being an investment is a joke.
All it takes is a downturn in the economy to put things into perspective.
Look at the for sale section in this forum. Suddenly the words 'Price drop!" are becoming very common....
Gee, you mean they aren't worth as much as you thought?
HA HA!
