Guitar WIP

Just out of curiosity , were you at that concert?

No, I wasn't. We had planned on going, made arrangements with people at work. Thought it was all good to go. When I came around to collect money to buy tickets, the cheap a$$es balked at paying $40 for lawn seats to see a lineup of Eric Clapton, SRV, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, and Jimmie Vaughan (SRV brother). (All well known musicians.) So, we didn't want to drive that 40-50 miles on our own and didn't go. Big mistake. One of the a$$es came into my lab the next morning, ashen faced and whining, bearing the news we wouldn't get another chance.

Hopefully you've heard of Clapton? :)

SRV was a very well known purveyor of Texas-style blues rock. He is still highly revered amongst electric blues players.

Do you play classical pieces only, Phillip, or a more varied fingerstyle repertoire?

Philliip, if you've seriously never checked out any Stevie, you really should take a few minutes and watch this video. It's a pretty long one, but if you ask my opinion, the best stuff starts at around 10 minutes in when he gave his final performance before he died on Austin City Limits. At this point he had cleaned up his life a good bit from the drugs and alcohol that haunted his earlier years. Some really, really, really good blues guitar here.

I'm definitely keeping this one (unless is sounds terrible, in which case I'll use it for toasting marshmallows) so you'll have a chance. Didn't know you play guitar. What kind?

I took lessons for a year, then my instructor moved to Indy, and instead of switching to someone else, I just stopped them. I haven't played much in a while (school gets in the way) but I have a Peavy Raptor electric guitar, and an Alvarez AD60CK acoustic. Beautiful Doa (Koa copy) wood. I'll a picture or two of it sometime.

Well, I'm sad for you that you couldn't go. Sounds like there's at least two lessons to be learned from that story.

Yes, I have heard of Clapton. :)

I don't actually play any classical pieces, because they require skill, which I don't have a lot of yet. Right now I'm just playing simple, single note tunes. I'm learning sight reading by practicing out of a hymnal. :)

I just want to play music that's beautiful to me, and that includes songs from many different genres. One of my favorite pieces is Pachelbel's Canon in D, and my main goal as far as guitar goes is to be able to play that.

Here's a practice "side" I bent a couple days ago. It's not too bad.

And here is the soundboard of the nylon string guitar I'm building:

Hi Phillip,

What happened to this thing???

Greg

It's sitting in various pieces in my shop. I decided to complete a nylon string guitar before the more complex steel string. Today I attached the back on the nylon, so it's coming along nicely. I'll post a few pictures of it later.

Thanks for asking! I'm glad to see there's still some interest. :)

Keep it up!!!

I am! :D

Thanks Phillip,

I take a look every day. I thought you might have got tired of it.

Greg

Nope, just going down rabbit trail for awhile. Actually, I'll be working on the steel string for a little while now while I wait for the rest of the stuff I need to finish the classical, to get here.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share some instruments my grandfather made. He was a very talented pianist. He had hoped to become a concert pianist, but a family happened instead. :)

This violin is not solid, it's actually made up of multiple pieces.

I'm trying to find out how many pieces there are in the piano, and I'll post it when I find out. He modeled it after the piano his mother gave him when he was 12 years old. Both real and miniature pianos are still in the family.

I have the fingerboard slotted for the frets, and cut to fit the neck. I also have the bridge made. Both are just sitting on the guitar here. I have to put the binding on the edges next.
