Gun Picture Thread

Carry the biggest caliber you can manage and that holds enough rounds to feel you can get the job done.

I mostly carried 9mm due to capacity and controllability, especially if I was going into Chicago. Around town it depended on what I was wearing.
The numbers I found, have civilian involved pistol use being 2 or 3 rounds average. No prolonged tv style shootouts. I carry at least one spare magazine for malfunction clearing as much as the extra ammo.

Understand the Chicago logic. I generally dress around what I carry. Mostly IWB so an untucked shirt is good to go.

In the suburbs, I never felt uncomfortable with 6 rounds of .357mag (full loads) in my Chiappa Rhino 3". Between the sci-fi looks and the blast of .357, mostly suburbanites are going to run if I miss. However, I am most accurate with the Steyr M9-a1 and modded Sig P365 SAS so they go carried the most. Im pretty much lights out with the Steyr out to 50 yards, even one handed.

I know what you mean. Most suburbanites know very little about guns as it is.
Nice. I have never fired a Steyr

You don't see them often, but 8000+ rounds in (educated guess) without a failure. I replaced the extractor about 500 rounds ago as it started spitting brass into my face.

My sister liked it enough to buy the A2 MF. My cousin bought the A1.

Great guns. I love the trapezoid sights though tritium versions would be nice.

Very nice

Rick, sorry that I missed your post. No, I didn't make it down.

I never really felt part of that crowd. If I did, for a moment, it was because of Steve...and I miss him dearly.

*I faced The Reaper in January, when I spent six days in the Neuro Unit, here at University Hospital in San Antone. In the words of Godfrey, "If you've come to kill me...even these days, it is not easy."
Shit, I hope you're on the mend.

This question is not intended to start a caliber war.
Is a 10mm too much for EDC in an urban setting? Over penetration is a concern, but any modern caliber has the same concern. I run Hornady 175gr Critical Duty. It is not full power 10mm but still no slouch.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks

I looked it up, R, and it's a cool round ....

Shot placement is king. If you are comfortable with gun and ammo, that's what matters much more than anything else, IMO.

And unless you risk encountering a gang of thugs (instead of one or two), speed, single stack concealability and shooting comfort is more important than large capacity.

Even the 124gr 9mm JHP above will shoot through a normal wall (don't ask me how I know), so you have to deal with background awareness anyways.

I was debating trying 10mm, it's quite common here in the mountains ... but it's too expensive (time and money) for me to introduce another caliber, so I didn't.

Thank you sir for the numbers.
I agree. I have a couple 1911's and a couple double stacks. Very unlikely I will encounter a gang of thugs. I rarely travel to areas where gangs frequent.
I believe any modern round hast the capability to be a pass through shot. As you stated background awareness falls to the responsible shooter.
I would not have gotten into the 10mm game if I did not reload and have 40S&W items. I am sure it is a popular caliber in your area. However, a 45ACP 255gr hardcast at the velocities these run at, will deal with the errant bear or furry critters.

Great conversation, always interesting to hear other folks take on carrying. When I lived in the big city, I carried my old TA-90 with 3 19-rd mags of 9mm jhp's staggered with FMJ's. I've shot CZ-clones for decades, so it's second nature to me. I did the initial work on the trigger, leaving some extra to allow for wearing, and now after many years the pistol has that silky smooth trigger and action that only comes from much use. Been many years since I competed, but this pistol was what I used when I finally broke 7 seconds for El Presidente. These days way out here in the sticks, I carry a little 6-shot .380, if I do run into trouble it's basically just a "break contact" weapon until I can get to my truck. Everybody carries in my little town, and there's no crime here...funny how that works huh? ;)

IMHO, 10mm and .357 are roughly equal in performance. Folks in urban environments have been using .357 for decades. I use a .357 in the winter under a coat. My 10 is an old heavy commander sized 3rd Gen S&W 1066, more of a safe queen, but I would have no problem carrying it. I do carry a 3rd gen 4516 compact.

I agree. Sounds like a nice S&W.

I wonder about the mag and factory mag release interaction as well.

The video you posted earlier identifies Shield Arms and their 15 round magazines. Currently using that system, and they require switching to a metal magazine release:

Also, agree with @91bravo , I’m sure with the two big names that put these factory ones out they will function appropriately. I have some 15 round factories on order, as well. Still interested to see if those empty mags drop cleanly, as talked about in the video. 🙂
I had one of the very first Glocks imported into the USA & the mag well was designed to not drop the mag.

The soldiers had to press the mag release & pull the magazine out.

So many PD’s etc said, if you want us to seriously consider this handgun, it needs to drop free!
