Guyot Pimp Idea....

Niiiiiiice! I like it!

Thank you! It came out pretty well, I think.

Cool deal... now I get it.

: )

I'm guessing from the efforts to design a convenient way to hang the bottle over the fire, 1., the water would boil quicker, or 2. the bottle would be less likely to tip and spill into fire, or 3. Both. Is that why you would hang instead of place into the fire?

I think that main value for me is the tipping issue... That and I saw that guys were doing it, and I figured out a good way to do it....

The other benefit of the bail, is that it gives you a way to manipulate the bottle, that won't be so hot.

Thanks for your patience with a stupid question.

No issue, happy to discuss this stuff.

Best,
Marion

Exactly. Even if you don't suspend the bottle the bail makes lifting it out of the fire a lot easier!

I agree, but I would expand on that, that the bail is another control point, which would be good for more than just lifting it out of the fire or suspending the bottle. It gives you control of the bottle, without touching the bottle.

You probably meant that, but I had to bogart in and be a pedant.... ;)

Seen it and got to play with it and REALLY like the concept. Good solution that is both light and strong.

I'd like to go above my house and play with some fire and this unit along with some of my new blades.

This weekend Bob wants you to come by the show and bring some of your latest knives, so that he can look them over.... So, maybe you should get hot, fire up your forge and finish that one you just built, the wider one, and have it finished by Saturday.... If you want, I have micarta you can use, so that you have it all finished.

Then, the weekend after that, we will have to go out and go camping, I have been inside way, way, way too long...

Later,

Oh I'm usually quite the pedant myself, so by all means! :D

Anyone try to attached a connection point to the bottom of the guyot to make it easier to pour from?

I thought maybe JBWelding a ring or something to attach another cable to might work. But was concerned if the JBWeld would stick to stainless or would come off in the heat of the fire.

Any ideas?

You could weld something on, and I think it would be heat resistant enough for the fire...

My concern would be that it would no longer work with the cup.

I figure I am just going to whittle something that will help with the pouring...

Or do like they do with billys, and rest it on the ground to pour.

I just use the crotch of a forked stick to lift the bottom of the bottle. Or wait until it's cool enough to grab. :)

I took a picture of the flexible bail with the normal Guyot lid....

I have thought of applying the wire rope to a leash for the Guyot lid, what do you all think? I don't know if I would use it, but I could make one...

Marion, between you and Pritch I'm gonna have to put a bale on mine soon...if I ever have time...

Just so you'll know for a few minutes I actually considered having you make a kydex case for mine that would attach to the RMJ Tactical R.U.M.P.s (Rigid-Universal-MOLLE-Platform) that I have, and then have attachments points for a shoulder strap and a nylon pouch or two that could attached to or be carried separately from my pack....but then I thought better of it. Soooo... you got a reprieve from that one but you may not be so lucky with the next far fetched idea I come up with :)

Well, to express my extreme thankfulness, saving me from feel horrible, after I told you that you were nuts, I will send you one of my flexible bails, when I send your knives back. : )

Great design, but does the wire really need to be that heavy duty? Not exactly sure what a full bottle weighs, but it can't be more then 3-4 pounds...

It's a good question.

I made the ones I made out of what was easily available to me. And the 1/16ths inch wire rope and fittings is the smallest that I have convenient access to.

One downside to a thinner wire rope would be a loss in comfort.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Thanks! I guess something good came from that crazy thought after all :D

Marion,

I like the simplicity of your design and the fact that it keeps the two sides of the bail seperated by the nature of how it is made. I don't think there is anything wrong with using heavier wire than necessary and like you said, it should be more comfortable to handle.

I think Misty's crazy too! (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) :D

Thanks man, though a lighter line might be good, I don't know.

Well, mist is in good company, isn't he...
