H1 and Warrior Knife

Same here! Pretty much, anyway. I'm old school, i guess...i prefer a good old-fashioned lopping off the head for a Christmas ham to this new-fangled "deanimate".

I think the "Guy Rafaeli" version of the Warrior "concept" is quite interesting. He has incorporated a few concepts differently than Randy and Bob did. But I think the "S" knife lineage is fascinating. A purpose designed shape for RGEO, with thought to every aspect of motion and muscle groups.

Mike and I just got back from Bob's and the history is longer and deeper than we had imagined. We'll be shipping the knife without the "Warior history booklet" and we'll follow up by sending the booklet to customers that didn't get one. We got a lot of great pictures and information that will be interesting to most knife afi's, martial artists, designers and MBC'ers.

The Wanner/Taylor concept of the "S" knife has great depth of thought, intuition based on Wanner's experience and skill, as well as a product development history (always interesting to me and others of the same "genetic disorder").

Hey John (dawg),

The Al Mar version was one of many done by companies (Al Mar, REKAT, etc.) as well as a number of custom versions made by different makers.

Producing the H1 Rafaeli Warrior also opens the "Pandora's box" for Spyderco to continue with variations of the original Wanner/Taylor Warrior concept.

Bob's Pygmy Warrior is an exceptional, highly refined version of the concept.

I guess Mike Sastre made most of the sheaths for all of the models so his knowledge of the evolution is greater than his "mum" might indicate. ;)

We appreciate his limited sharing as Bob preferred the new models be limited in available information until he's ready. (yes, that means no pictures yet :p)

Your kind understanding is appreciated.

Thanks for the insight Sal. Knowing the history makes waiting for it a little easier ~;-)

Sal,

Glad you finally got together with Bob and got the Warrior lineage straightened out. Interesting stories within the stories, aren't there? Bob told me you guys paid him a visit. Pygmy's an interesting little bugger!!

Mike,

Bob isn't a pygmy, he's the "Hobbit from Hell." Just ask him. I trained with Bob on the original knife. I'm not sure this new Spyderco will do everything the old version would. Bob had me convinced that it was my best option if I were ever required to go up against an opponent with a machete when all I had was a knife.

Sidehill,

You missed the reference - the Pygmy is a knife in the Warrior line.

Hi Gouger,

Glad to hear that you trained with Bob. He's very skilled. Do you have any of the /Warrior models? Which ones?

I guess we can't use the "Hobbit" name, despite early history, so "Pygmy Warrior", while a different model, is what we have. Bob named the model. Even if we were to re-create the "Hobbit Warrior", we would have to use a different name.

The Rafaeli version was designed to serve different needs than the original Wanner/Taylor creation, so certain features, like using H1, are different.

Mike,

I've been playing with the Pygmy Warrior and it is a sweet piece.

Sal,

Amen re: the Pygmy!! As soon as I get a couple of the H1 Warriors, I'll work up a sheath for it.

Stealth Warrior is a guardless 9" (as I remember) bladed knife, that Bob used to wear upside-down. Pygmy was basically a fixed blade version of the Pocket Hobbit (folder). Again as I remember, Randy Wanner did most of the design on the custom Warriors, that then became the Al Mar production Warriors, with Bob Taylor tweaking the design, then doing the other versions. Kinda watched a lot of it evolve.

Would love to see that Pygmy Warrior...the "Hobbit Warrior" is one of my all-time favorite designs and the folding version was a cool knife too, although I never owned one. I can easily visualize the uses and mechanics of that Pygmy and it seems very exciting. Also seems like in many ways it would both fit in and expand upon the options available in "p'kal" styles.

Wow...Just held one of these!

I don't think the Pygmy Warrior would work in P'Kal style. It's designed for RGEO.
