H1 and Warrior Knife

Sort of reminds me of a fixed ATR,except for the serrated portion at the top of the blade.Which,by the way,I would prefer over sawteeth.Overall,I dig the design.

And why is 440C a better alternative than H-1?

H-1 is a supremely tough steel that takes and keeps a good edge for a long while and will only get better with use (work hardening) and on top of that its immune to rust.

Why go without 440C?

440C has far better edge retention than H1 on a plain edge blade, unless something has changed since the early version of the Salt folders, and also has some pretty good rust resistance for a high performing stainless.

H1 is great in SE, not so great in a plain edge. I had a PE Pac Salt with an edge that rolled and dulled like it was made of butter. I gave it away. The SE Salt I had, alternatively, was a great work knife. Maybe I had a bad blade? Regardless, my impression of PE H1 was a very bad one. It was like using something made out of some cheap 420J2.

Regardless, thanks for the reply, Sal. Maybe I will give PE H1 another chance.

H-1 in PE rocks!
The trick is to use it a bit, and wait till it gets harder from use. The changes in hardness are drastic. You'll notice edge retention getting better almost daily. I love H-1 for it's almost mythical abilities.
A tough steel that does NOT rust. Amazing!
And by the way, In Israel, the air is so humid, any stainless would rust. I've had many stainless knives pit on me very quickly. So an H-1 Combat knife for Israel is totally optimal.

I'm a diver and I can attest that even "stainless steels" rust almost immediatly when exposed to salt water. If you use a stainless dive knife and dont rinse it within like an hour of being submerged it WILL RUST. I know, I've had it happen. Now I use a titanium knife wich is a complete POS and my salt 1 wich rocks. If you are in wet, salty, briny, environments H-1 is the only choice. If you say different you dont have experience in those environments.

RS1986,
I am new to H1. Can you explain the "changes in hardness". It really doesn't matter much to me....I am buying a Warrior regardless of the steel but it would be nice to know more about it.

to my knowledge : H1 gets harder as you grind or sharpen it .

I't looks alot like a Hobbit Warrior made by REKAT, Bob Taylors old company. They also made a larger one called the Gaigen Warrior and a folding knife called the Pocket Hobbit. The knife was a reverse grip design and the teeth was for trapping like a praying mantis.I have the original Al Mar version.

I question whether Al Mar would make a knife called the "Gaijin". I also question whether or not his Japanese maker would make a knife with than name.

 That's a pretty derogatory word to name anything. I was a bit surprised when I saw that, too.

For those that don't know, racism against other races and nationalities is a pretty significant issue in Japan, and that is what they call all forms of outsiders. It's not a very nice word.

The Hobbit fang is a neck knife which i also have.Al Mar's version was just called the Warrior.REKAT's old catalog listed the full sized knife Gaijin Warrior, the smaller version Hobbit Warrior and of course a folding knife called the Pocket Hobbit

Hi Hardheart,

I believe that Mike Sastre was saying that REKAT planned to make a version called the Gaijin.

There has been a lot of controversy regarding the model, where it came from, who made it, etc. We're tring to put todegther a history, but it's challenging at best.

I can tell you for certain that the model that we are making was penned by Guy Rafaeli. I have worked with him from the first drawing and Guy will receive part of the royalty for his efforts.

Randy Wanner and Bob Taylor have a lot of input in the original designs. They have waved their part of the royalty to go to the "Wounded Warrors" fund.

Here' a picture of an Al Mar Warrior (top), REKAT Hobbit Warrior (middle), and REKAT Gaijin Warrior Proto (bottom). There is also a Stealth Warrior and a Pygmy Warrior that never came out.

Thanx Mike.

As I remember, Bob (REKAT) said the "Stealth Warrior" didn't have a guard. Wasn't Bob's folding Hobbit also based on the Warrior design?

Stealth Warrior is a guardless 9" (as I remember) bladed knife, that Bob used to wear upside-down. Pygmy was basically a fixed blade version of the Pocket Hobbit (folder). Again as I remember, Randy Wanner did most of the design on the custom Warriors, that then became the Al Mar production Warriors, with Bob Taylor tweaking the design, then doing the other versions. Kinda watched a lot of it evolve.

Bob is currently assisting us with the history booklet that will follow the introduction of the model and eventually be part of it.

Looking foward to this one. Always wanted an Al Mar Warrior, but am somewhat confused with the current production that keeps showing on one of the auction sites; and pretty much gave up on my search.

I believe a Spderco version will serve very well.
