H1 Spearfishing Knife

For braining fish a pointy knife is all that is needed and H1 is imho a waste. I've been using an Omer mini Laser for this and it's been fine.

An Aqua salt in a more dive friendly sheath is a great general purpose dive knife. I normally prefer the Caspian for diving though:D

I can't see how taking that pointy knife and having it made out of the perfect steel for saltwater use would be a waste?

H1 is expensive and sometimes knives sink out of reach.. I carry my Caspian for my safety and use the cheap Omer for dispatching fish since it's easy to loose a knife while dealing with fish, line, knife etc. If they could make a cheap pointy H1 knife then I'd probably get one, but edge holding hasn't really been an issue with "braining" knives and that is one of H1's huge advantages compared to most dive knives.

That makes sense. So you view your braining knife as almost disposable? I would hate to lose a quality pricey knife. Even those Riffe knives run anywhere from 50-100 bucks. Maybe a lanyard of some type would be good?

I was kind of thinking of a design that would be capable of general dive knife duties but with a sharper point that could be utilized for braining fish. The idea of carrying a second knife freediving/spearfishing just for that specific duty is unappealing to me. IMO, it's just too easy to make a more versatile dive knife that can handle it all.

The Aqua salt is a great general purpose diving knife. The sheath doesn't work well for diving though, but good kydex replacement shouldn't be too difficult. I used to carry just one knife, but I prefer to carry one for my safety (Caspian with blunt tip) and one for dispatching fish. I view the fish knife as disposable, but if the water isn't too deep (20+ meters) I'll try to retrieve it. I've considered a lanyard, but I'm not to fond of more line around my body when freediving... Might put a small piece of orange line on it to make it easier to find in the future. The Omer mini laser that I have on my arm for dispatching fish costs $15 and has been surprisingly good:o

I would love to see a few fixed blade dive oriented h1 knives. I have an aqua salt fixed to my bc. I'd also like to see a smaller fixed blade h1 knife to attach to a pfd for kayakers and river rafters. Something with mabe a 2.5 inch blade that would be good for emergency line/webbing cutting if you are tangled upside down in a kayak.

I'm not a diver but I am a boater and I plan on getting an Aqua Salt once the new edition is on the market, probably a SE yellow handle, it seems like it would make a good all around 'keep on the boat' kind of knife for general use. I might even put a lanyard with one of those floater things on it just in case it goes over the side, why waste $100+ if you can avoid it?

I see you live in Norway...you would free dive 20+ meters down to retrieve a knife in those waters? I assume you're either kidding or you have your pants specially tailored in the front...

I wear a wet suit so the cold isn't an issue. With training freediving to 20m is pretty easy. I don't compete (those guys do 70-120m) and I max out at about 35m (mostly because of safety reasons and it gets cold and dark at depth. Spearfishing is very limited for me at that depth since my bottom time is so short)

My normal spearfishing depth is 10-25m and I stay down for about 2 minutes.

His thread needs more pics of h1 in action. My super hawk is always clipped on my bc as a backup.

35 is down there. Hard to understand unless you've been there, but yes, cold and dark. Takes a long time to get there too doesn't it?!...even after you become negative. I've been past 30 diving a line but never spearfishing. After 25 meters there are no thoughts of "hunting"....only of making it back to daylight. :)

A little CR spearfishing...My buddy last year at the "secret spot". hehe

Sometimes coming up seems to take a long time;) It also feels a lot deeper when visibility isn't too good. I'm 41 now, wife and 2 kids so I don't push any limits. PB in static is 6:11 and I usually don't have any issues with equalization so I feel I'm pretty safe.

Going up North to do some freediving in a months time. It's going to be sweet, but cold (about 8 degrees)

Sweet fish! Only thing huge here is halibut, but the wolffish can get pretty big and the meat is great eating.

6:11 static?? YIKES! You were getting pretty serious at that point weren't you?? haha. My pb is 4:13. I don't like pain and I'm too lazy to practice enough that it doesn't hurt anymore. :) Agreed on the visibility. Amazing what a difference that can make.

Anyway...lest we further derail this discussion, here is a thread i started last year discussing using my modified Pacific Salt as a "brain stabber".

I use a spyderco salt folder as a backup for my riffle, it gets used heavily while I am spearfishing and diving

Folders work great when you don't have to wear gloves. I use a Pacific salt when diving in warmer waters (just a neoprene vest and board shorts)
