i am a commercial fisherman and spend alot of time recreational fishing and kayaking, and when i read about H1 steel, i knew i had found my dream knife. i wanted a knife that could handle saltwater, and judging by what spyderco claimed, it was the answer to saltwater use. WELL ITS NOT! i have had this knife for about 2 months now, and have carried it to work almost everyday, and had it out in the kayak several times. there is a rust spot about the size of a dime, that started in the H1 logo, and spread out. it is also speckled with rust spots across alot of the blade. there is rust coming out from one of the pins around the washer as well....similer prefermance to a 20$ stainless walmart knife.
i bought this knife, and was somewhat disapointed with the qualitiy. it was pinned, and there was some side to side play. i can deal with that as long as it dosnt rust. it does not hold an edge very well, trimming the tops off the rubber gloves i wear and cutting a rope or two pretty much does the edge in. i can deal with that, as long as it dosnt rust. it was expensive, nearly 70$, well, i can deal with that as long as it dosnt rust...it started rusting..i cant deal with that, along with all the other problems. this was a pacific salt model. save your money, buy a 20$ stainless gerber and replace it every year. it least it will lock up tight and hold an edge.

Have you contacted Spyderco regarding this problem? There CS is top notch.

Considering I have personally tested my H1 knives in a variety of corrosive environments and found no rust problems I find it hard to believe it rusted out in two months.

Pics?

The rust from the logo is from the tooling used, should clean right up.

Since H1 has been thoroughly tested in a variety of corrosive materials and has never rusted, I think Spyderco would be very interested in getting this knife back.
I know it holds a nice edge and is easy to sharpen. I've used mine hard and put it away wet, no rust.

i didnt say it "rusted out", i said a dime sized spot has started in the logo, along with speckling.
i did not get a knockoff, unless newgraham is selling knock offs for 70$ that come in spyderco boxes.
i did not contact them, i thought someone from the company was a user in this forum, maybe they will post something up.
pics or not, it happend pal.

it does sharpen very easily, prob the easiest i have ever used. but it does dull easily, atleast for me. i guess i will call them, sound like i got a "bad" one.

You are going to have a hard time convincing anyone here H1 rusted without pictures.
It's been around a few years and there's no reports of it ever rusting.
If it did I'm sure Sypderco will make it right and will want it back to see why it did rust.
They will take care of you, that i'm certain of.

as mentioned, the rust in and around the logo is likely residue from the bits used to engrave.

i let an atlantic salt sit in a concentrated saline solution for a couple days an had no rust anywhere.

h1 is supposed to be use hardened, which i take to mean it will get harder the longer and more it is used. edge retention should be reflected as well.

It sounds like the OP is disappointed overall considering the price, blade play, edge holding and rust.
I find the comments about rust curious but other than that, his complaints sound credible and I can understand the disappointment.

Hi Deermaster,

Sorry for your frustration.

Why don't you send it to Spyderco and call it to my attention.

The logo will sometimes tarnish (the stuff they use to make the logo is the cause) but it will scrub off. The rusted pin bothers me.

If you are cutting line or rope, the serrated edge is considerably more effective. If you'll bother to send it to me to look at, I'll swap it out for a serrated version.

i can see how spyderco has such a good reputation for CS, i would really appreciate it if you would take a look. what address do i send it too? thanks, i really appreciate the help :thumbup:

Now that is great service Sal! I agree the pin is weird. The logo thing has come up before. Mine has been in salt water environments for long periods of time! Great knife and have had no problems! The first time since H1 has come out that this has happened.

I'm sure we would all like to know what you find out about this knife when you look it over. I think all of us are surprised to hear of the pin rusting.

Would still like to see a picture.
