h1 to good to be true? YUP! not worth a penny IMO

"not worth a penny" with customer service like that.... I think its worth every penny

Would still like to see a picture.

um seriously....its obvious i dont have a camera. and i posted that i appreciated the customer service. if you'll notice, i attempted to edit the title of the thread, but wasnt able. geez people, stop the bashing. i guess threads arent allowed unless they are positive only. i had a problem, it was fixed in about 5 minutes by the head R&D of the comany. thats awesome, and i appreciate it. lets move on and stop implying im lying.

I don't think they are actually implying that you are lying, but the only Salt we've seen corrode was tonydahose's Atlantic Salt that he dropped in a chlorine tablet storage tank overnight, resting directly on the chemicals. That proved that even H-1 can corrode if you try hard enough. The logo, as mentioned, can develop some rust, but it is the material deposited to darken the etch that rusts, rather than the H-1 itself. I have heard of rust developing on the washer around the pivot pin in early models, which lead to a material change for that part. My guess would be someone goofed and used the wrong washer on yours.

These days, it seems that everyone has a cell phone with a camera, so people have a hard time believing that anyone doesn't have a digital camera.

Sal isn't the head of R&D, he's the president of the company. (He may, and probably is, head of R&D, but that's not the point I was trying to make.)

I don't think we're we "bashing" per se, just expressing our belief that the title was outlandish considering you hadn't even contacted Spyderco regarding this problem.

When you come into a fan forum with a title and product bashing content like yours, you gotta expect you're going to take some heat. Had you come in and simply told your story and asked for some guidance on what to do (and pictures always help), I'm sure the replies would have been nothing but helpful from the start.

Sal must be one of the most ethical (if not the most ethical) person in the industry - which is another reason why his products are held in such high regard.

Sheesh go easy on him guys, his H1 rusted.

It can happen, here is the proof. It's most likely from the tooling though.

It's my understanding though that the 1st gens can rust at the pivot, logo(anywhere there's tooling), and possibly the clip because it wasn't Ti.

That's why you should buy the gen 2's

If he bought it with the newer H1 logo then there should be no pivot rusting and the clip is titanium. I believe they changed the logo from the lettering for the gen 2 salts.

I am not interested in a picture because I dont believe you.... I am interested in a picture because I would like to see how the knife looks if in fact it did naturally rust.

i looked at the pivot very closely just a while ago, it is indeed the washer, not the pin itself that is rusting. the logo is completly covered in rust, and is spreading from the logo out. the total amount is about the size of the thumb hole. the spotting on the blade looks like to be some sort of stain. i soaked in down in breakfree clp, and then rubbed it with a pencil eraser, and the stains removed. i looked at where the stains were with a magnifying glass, and there is no metal pitting of any kind. im not sure what caused it. soooo
the logo is truly rusting, there is some pitting
the pivot washers are rusted, not the pin
the blade spotting were stains....i have no idea what caused that, it appeared to be rust until they rubbed off with oil and an eraser.

Regarding the blade stains, I don't know how much truth there is to this, but there were previous reports of staining on the H1 blade (Benchmade, no Spyderco product). They wiped off with a little cleaner and never showed up again. The theory was that after finishing grinding one set of knives (not true stainless like H1), if you started grinding a batch of H1 blades, the first few might catch some tiny bits of other metals, which would then rust on the blade. They could be wiped off without any visible damage, as the H1 wasn't actually rusting.

The pitting is hard to explain, but if you have ever exposed the knife to chemicals, it can corrode.

Here is an H1 that was left in chlorine:

Beautiful! I love that patina. :p :D

I doubt he was fishing in pure chlorine. I'm glad someone finally found something that would rust it, I was about to let mine swim in some muriatic acid overnight.

Hey it wasn't me. :D

I wonder if you swim with an H1 in a chlorinated pool enough, if it could develope some corrosion?

I have and it didn't. The concentration of chlorine in those pools is low, I doubt it'd prove to be a problem.

I'm just back from a Canoeing trip, and my H-1 is Niiiiiiice!
Best steel for salt water. Not a spot of rust, or even stains for that matter. and I've carried it 24/7 for a week, generally only wiping it BEFORE I cut food with it.
