So, going to a birthday party for my girlfriend's coworker last night, they are cool folks and I decided to wear some dressier knives out. I just received my first Microtech, a beautiful UTX-70 (courtesy of our own Bob Denman!) in my watch pocket, a 4" Widgy prybar, a milled copper Rex 45 PM2, and my Matriarch2 on the far right side, and my Leatherman Wingman (Also courtesy of BF member GatorMedic!). I was wearing a coat and shirt which covered my pockets in totality, just to be clear. This is what I had:
This was at a Japanese arcade, that was in a small mall, a few cities down from me. I regularly go to much larger mall that have no such security, see below. So, we walk in, we prepare to go up the escalator to the arcade/bowling alley, and I notice two security guards with wands, waving folks down who go up the escalator. "Seriously?!" I think, having come all this way, just to have to ride back or try to find a relative stranger's car to put all of that + my girl's M4 Sage 5?! I notice an elevator, that you actually pass on the way to the escalator, completely out of sight of security, and I say to my girl, "Let's just go there", and she replies "No, they surely have someone posted up there, how could they leave a hole that big in the security?", and I was thinking she was probably right, they must have someone at the top with an elevator right here, closer than the escalator. It just makes the security totally null and void. But, she texts the coworker who was up there just to make sure.
I prepare to put it in one of her coworkers car, and take all that out of my pocket and hand it to her... from a distance, it looked like I was a mugger who was being finicky about which knife he wanted to use
But, the coworker replies that, no, nobody is atop the elevator, no security to speak of, just go that way. Okay, great! Well, we did, and...there was someone there, but they were on a chair at the top of the escalator, BEHIND where the elevator gets out (eg, cannot see the in/out of elevator). So, I just walked in via elevator and decided to forgo the security check. I had to take my girl's purse into the bathroom like I was Snoop Dogg "Slip my girl a .44 and she slip in the back door"
taking all of my stuff out and replacing it on my person.
After that, I hung out with, met and talked to her coworkers, played arcade games, and we even went downstairs to smoke outside a couple of times, each time, I simply came back up on that elevator. I just kept my things on me, my girlfriend kept hers, we could act normally and everything was right with the world. It is seriously almost like they are giving you the option to forgo the security check, like "Security w/ metal detectors posted here - optional but strongly recommended you be searched please". Absolute insane security theater. I felt a lot better with my stuff on me. How hard was that, I thought, to just let me be with my items on me? It was simple as can be.
I regularly go to what I think is the second largest mall in America, they have no such rules. Have since I was a kid, hung out there when I was younger. It is an exceedingly safe place, but there have been the occasional shootings, gang attacks there, even though its very upscale and you do not have to worry for yourself while you are there... just, once a year, the right two groups find each other and some fight/shooting pops off. It is always gang related, is my point. The shooting in 2021 was a guy who saw a rival gang. I used to BUY knives there. You know the old trope, "mall knives"? I bought my first carry pocketknife at a mall. This place has security, but they exist mainly for issues (eg, something happens, they are called, or they stand and watch). There's no search, no metal detector, buzzers, absolutely nothing of the sort. Hasn't ever been. Have not been hassled since being a loitering teenager. Wonder why a place so much smaller would employ two people just to do a job that anyone with half a mind can go right around? Baffling.
