Had a close call last night with weird impotent security theater and ~$640 worth of knives.

So, going to a birthday party for my girlfriend's coworker last night, they are cool folks and I decided to wear some dressier knives out. I just received my first Microtech, a beautiful UTX-70 (courtesy of our own Bob Denman!) in my watch pocket, a 4" Widgy prybar, a milled copper Rex 45 PM2, and my Matriarch2 on the far right side, and my Leatherman Wingman (Also courtesy of BF member GatorMedic!). I was wearing a coat and shirt which covered my pockets in totality, just to be clear. This is what I had:

This was at a Japanese arcade, that was in a small mall, a few cities down from me. I regularly go to much larger mall that have no such security, see below. So, we walk in, we prepare to go up the escalator to the arcade/bowling alley, and I notice two security guards with wands, waving folks down who go up the escalator. "Seriously?!" I think, having come all this way, just to have to ride back or try to find a relative stranger's car to put all of that + my girl's M4 Sage 5?! I notice an elevator, that you actually pass on the way to the escalator, completely out of sight of security, and I say to my girl, "Let's just go there", and she replies "No, they surely have someone posted up there, how could they leave a hole that big in the security?", and I was thinking she was probably right, they must have someone at the top with an elevator right here, closer than the escalator. It just makes the security totally null and void. But, she texts the coworker who was up there just to make sure.

I prepare to put it in one of her coworkers car, and take all that out of my pocket and hand it to her... from a distance, it looked like I was a mugger who was being finicky about which knife he wanted to use 😂 But, the coworker replies that, no, nobody is atop the elevator, no security to speak of, just go that way. Okay, great! Well, we did, and...there was someone there, but they were on a chair at the top of the escalator, BEHIND where the elevator gets out (eg, cannot see the in/out of elevator). So, I just walked in via elevator and decided to forgo the security check. I had to take my girl's purse into the bathroom like I was Snoop Dogg "Slip my girl a .44 and she slip in the back door" 😂 taking all of my stuff out and replacing it on my person.

After that, I hung out with, met and talked to her coworkers, played arcade games, and we even went downstairs to smoke outside a couple of times, each time, I simply came back up on that elevator. I just kept my things on me, my girlfriend kept hers, we could act normally and everything was right with the world. It is seriously almost like they are giving you the option to forgo the security check, like "Security w/ metal detectors posted here - optional but strongly recommended you be searched please". Absolute insane security theater. I felt a lot better with my stuff on me. How hard was that, I thought, to just let me be with my items on me? It was simple as can be.

I regularly go to what I think is the second largest mall in America, they have no such rules. Have since I was a kid, hung out there when I was younger. It is an exceedingly safe place, but there have been the occasional shootings, gang attacks there, even though its very upscale and you do not have to worry for yourself while you are there... just, once a year, the right two groups find each other and some fight/shooting pops off. It is always gang related, is my point. The shooting in 2021 was a guy who saw a rival gang. I used to BUY knives there. You know the old trope, "mall knives"? I bought my first carry pocketknife at a mall. This place has security, but they exist mainly for issues (eg, something happens, they are called, or they stand and watch). There's no search, no metal detector, buzzers, absolutely nothing of the sort. Hasn't ever been. Have not been hassled since being a loitering teenager. Wonder why a place so much smaller would employ two people just to do a job that anyone with half a mind can go right around? Baffling.

Seems like overkill for a night on the town, but that’s just me. To each his own.
I know, I carry this because I like to. I don't strictly need to carry all of it. They are all there to fill a role, though. Main pocket knife (PM2), Multitool (Leatherman), small fifth pocket knife (MT) and "get off me" knife (Ma2). It is a surprisingly easy carry. Normally is a lot lighter, too, without copper to weigh me down.

But, any one of those would have still been not allowed by them, the small Sage my girl had, the MT, Leatherman... all over two inch blades. The security theater is still nuts.

That's a lot of crap to go to an arcade.
Yeah, like I said, I ALWAYS carry things like a Leatherman. Always carry a main pocket knife like a PM2. Always like to have a small folder like the Ma2 on me. And I just got the MT, I was excited, it's a watch pocket knife, it's just... for fun! Cause it's nice. But, fact is, it wouldn't have mattered if I just brought the Leatherman, that would not be allowed if I went through the optional security either. My point here is the security theater, it was not a hidden elevator, you see the elevator before you see the escalator.

I had absolutely no idea there would be any type of security, I didn't go anticipating this, man. Also, it was GONNA be a lot of trouble. Then I just... used the elevator.
Ierno, I have just never seen this type of stuff at a mall before. That was the main story I was trying to relate. This totally weird, ineffectual, half-security. I've posted an Opinel, Yojumbo, and slipjoint at a picnic, nobody thought that was overkill. I didn't take the Matriarch outta my pocket for that shot, for exactly that reason, lol. Three is fine, four seems the limit for "normal" here. Ha.
My goodness, such a close call! 🤦🏻‍♂️
It would have been a hassle going back or leaving my stuff somewhere.

Experience has taught us that Security Guards are very open to bribes of the Sandwich variety.

Simply use your EDC sandwich fixings, and one of your largest knives, and make those guards some sandwiches! You will get the Golden Ticket to the Arcade!

Works at the Ballpark!

I am totally up for bribery via snackage! Ha, that sounds especially likely in a space like a concert or a game where you can tailgate and get some'n cooking outside.

Well good thing they didn't catch you so you could save the day with your 4 knives and prybar!

The only thing I can say about carrying that much "knivory": if you had to outrun a situation... you couldn't.

If the mall you visited has posted rules that indicate no knives on the premises by patrons, then thems tha rules and The Dude abides.

If not, then there may have been another reason for the security checkpoint. Was there anything posted, or an event being held on that floor?

At any rate, the security detail was obviously not buttoned up tight.

I guess you never know when the Space Invaders are gonna land...

It's a dang Leatherman, a tiny, tiny Microtech, and then two 3~ folders.
Jeez, I may as well carry two Espadas. I did not get this reaction carrying one knife less. 😂 Or a slippie instead of the OTF. This is the first day I have ever had an OTF, guys, I am not trying to be superman, was just excited the lil thing fit in my watch pocket.
This is not a wild carry. All tiny stuff.

No other event, I had assumed that it would be similar to the much larger one I had frequented. Did not come in a car, but in a Lyft. I was simply there. Had I known about the rules, I would have indeed "abided".

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting this as me trying to sneak my stuff into a place. No, I was THERE, dropped off, after a long Lyft ride. It was figure it out, leave this all in a bush, or I don't know what. But I didn't come there with the intention to break any rules, I'll say that much. I mainly came here to tell the story about this farcical security, like, have security or don't, I figure, but hey, worked out.

I look at it this way: No harm means no foul!
Indeed, I just thought it was a funny story. I think I may have been misinterpreted by many, though.

You’re EDC load out somehow reminded me of this scene…

Man, I know I will continue to get clowned on and I'll take it, I took the risk and went over the unspoken limit of 3 folders, but I remember being heavily upvoted and commented positively on a Yojumbo/Old Timer/Opinel/Leatherman combo, which is not too far off from this.

Does anyone see how tiny that Microtech is? I really hope folks don't think I'm carrying that as some type of tactical folder. Lol.

I’m not clowning you, just having a little fun. Honestly, that scene could represent most of us around here when it comes to our knives.

I hear you, I just kind of see the way this could be misinterpreted and am afraid that I'm gonna look like a mall ninja now 😂
