Had a close call last night with weird impotent security theater and ~$640 worth of knives.

In your initial post you mention that you could have put it in a co-worker of your girlfriend's car, which could have been less awkward than creeping around the security.
I really don't want to put all of that up in a relative stranger's car. Folks were drinking, it was a jovial party atmosphere, I've had enough of that to just know to have my stuff on me unless I really have no choice. If I go back to the place, I will simply follow their rules that I was unaware of. Followed the example the larger mall had set, my mistake.

It was a bind, a jam, that is the point of this story. I'm not writing it to be the foremost in responsible rule-following, though this is a far cry from leaving a 9 in a bush. We all carry stuff like this around regularly, and it was more about the value than anything at this point in time, more about "not letting $600 go unattended, rules be damned"

Not that it makes much of a difference, but the elevator, it came first. You actually had to pass it up to go volunteer yourself to be searched at the escalators. No creeping involved. Only the first time, getting them out, did I feel like I was doing anything furitive. I just went directly up as opposed to a longer route physically, and a lengthier route time-wise (cause of a search). No rule or sign said to submit onesself to search, or not to use the elevator. Was using it all night. For all I know, the search WAS optional.

Basically, I'm not trying to break the rules or be irresponsible or threaten anyone, I just wanted to hold onto my nice new knives, I am sure you can understand that.

I have a hard time abiding by stupid rules like that, and don't if I can help it nowadays.

TL;DR summary down below

Chicago has a 2.5" blade length limit and I used to have a Spyderco dragonfly for when I went into the city. However, I stopped abiding by that a few years ago. Now, I not only carry my 3.4" Kershaw Launch 8 auto, but at least one gun.

Only time I've ever had an issue with carrying a knife was outside of the city at a western bar I went to with my ex and her best friend. Bouncer at the door tried to confiscate my 3" TSF Beast. Not a particularly large or threatening knife. No sign on the door about no knives. Bouncer saw the knife and reached for it, without asking. Stupid move. Bouncer was about 5'8" 160, I'm 6'4.5" and 250, probably more like 265 back then. I swatted his hand away and had some harsh words. He told me I wasn't allowed to have it according to bar rules. I told him I'd put it back in the car, he refused, had to take it then in there. Yeah I gave him two choices, both of which would result in me going back to my car and putting the knife in the glove box. He thankfully made the right choice. I don't like throwing hands or making threats. My hamfists are more than enough in a one on one fight, especially against a scrawny little **** like that. It's funny too, there was only one other bouncer was about the same size. I'm like yeah they really take security seriously. Normally I'd have left, but we'd driven an hour to get there.

I don't carry a knife for SD. I carry my gun pretty much everywhere, except places with metal detectors like the airport or govt buildings. I try to avoid those anyway. I just took an amtrak to Michigan a few weeks ago, no detector, nothing. Walked right in with my Sig on my hip and my Steyr in my backpack.

Living near Chicago, and the dumbassery that comes with that, I make sure to research places I am going so I know what to be prepared for. Especially with my transplant hospital being in the same neighborhood as where the diabolical attack happened to Juicy Smulliet.
That is some gall, to try to reach at your person like that! I'd never think of violating someone's autonomy like that, I'd expect to get hit! 😂 Good thing you tempered yourself.

As I get older, smarter, into good situations, I find myself less likely to be bothered or profiled or searched by police, I more and more carry what I like. Generally, what I like falls within the law. Today, it did not. This is talking knife-wise. This Microtech is probably more illegal than my pistol, or just as, and I didn't have any problem carrying that out, the MT, that is. The MT is not for defense though, it's a gentlemanly thing, I'd have a Cold Steel or a mean reverse-S for defense/emergencies like accidents.

Funny thing is, it must be where I was raised, I'm WAY more skittish about carrying a gun, (for good reason, I can't do it legally in this place, but, you know, I'm a cool, calm guy who isn't one for bars, fights, etc). I know it's smarter for my family to just have the gun, but, I'd be better off just moving myself to a place where it is legal. I do not know if it was you or someone likeminded I was talking to on here, but I would love to leave where I am for a better state.

If you bush stash a gun and come back and it's gone, you can make it right by then leaving a holster and ammo. I mean, not much good without those.
"Bush stash" 😂 That should only be a term used in the bedroom!

Yeah, leave 'em something to retain the gun with too. Broken beer bottle or Microtech should do the trick, either/or.

It's a dang Leatherman, a tiny, tiny Microtech, and then two 3~ folders.
Jeez, I may as well carry two Espadas. I did not get this reaction carrying one knife less. 😂 Or a slippie instead of the OTF. This is the first day I have ever had an OTF, guys, I am not trying to be superman, was just excited the lil thing fit in my watch pocket.
This is not a wild carry. All tiny stuff.

No other event, I had assumed that it would be similar to the much larger one I had frequented. Did not come in a car, but in a Lyft. I was simply there. Had I known about the rules, I would have indeed "abided".

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting this as me trying to sneak my stuff into a place. No, I was THERE, dropped off, after a long Lyft ride. It was figure it out, leave this all in a bush, or I don't know what. But I didn't come there with the intention to break any rules, I'll say that much. I mainly came here to tell the story about this farcical security, like, have security or don't, I figure, but hey, worked out.

Indeed, I just thought it was a funny story. I think I may have been misinterpreted by many, though.
I didn't see if you answered the question about the entrance of the mall being posted "No weapons allowed?

See sarcasm is a useful teaching tool!
That did do a good job of displaying the ludicrousness of it. I just watched a Brit react "Wow" to my original response to the bush stash, and I have got to think.... at first, I reacted like, "Oh, ya glubbed up there..." but I don't like the idea of a dude from the UK seeing American gun owners like that, going like "Oh, forgot my nine in my pocket, better do a bush stash!!" like WTF are these Yanks doing, he's thinking.
Still feel bad for piling on the guy lol

Yes, I glubbed up. Anything over 2" was against their rules, though I don't think they were measuring. Upon seeing the wands, I was wondering if I could just walk up with my knives within the rules, and I read the sign out front... nope.

That is why I made clear, if I go back again, I'll just follow their rules. It was posted, but it was in the "fine print", nothing you'd be expected to catch walking in. Moreso a bunch of stuff that gives them discretion to nail ya if needed.

Remember, you are in like minded company here. I’ve seen pocket dump pics on this site that would make yours look tiny.
True, I didn't even have the gun, backup gun, flashlight, lighter, hankie, freaking challenge coins, that I see some carry 😁 It's possible to go way higher than this. All this stuff weighs a combined lb.

Not so fast. I have had a gun stolen from my car; a random breaking and entry as the same person had hit a number of cars in the same garage. Perhaps the spot he found for it was safer. The real culprit is the property owner who denies lawful carry.

n2s

Not so fast? Leaving a loaded firearm out in the open where anyone could happen by and grab it was dumb, period. Also, I'm not sure how you could presume that leaving a gun against a tree in a public space is somehow safer than a locked car. I mean, using your logic, might as well just keep all your guns at the police station, because your house could get broken into to, right?

I prefer to check them in and out like a library, yes. Take one, leave one rules.

That's a lot of crap to go to an arcade.
Man, come to think of it, I took apart and moved a bed earlier in the day.
This is a reasonable amount of crap for a full day of activity. I just want to make that clear, that I didn't strap everything on specifically for that outing. That was just where this story... became a story, that wasn't "I carried my EDCs today. Did some stuff, too. Unscrewed the screws on a bed"

I'm gonna watch all the "Okay, superhero" people to see if y'all post in the guns and knives thread. If you're going anywhere short of the hood, I'll say its a little much to go there. What do you need that for? 😁

Now you get a little of what I get. A gun just is not an option for me, where I am. Also, this is kind of a general comment, not every word totally directed at you. But I get a ton of crap for carrying a defensive folder that I practice with daily in my idle time (Watching TV? Why not wave & watch?) and is one, of many tools. People don't see this kind of thing on my person, unless they think knives are cool.

Please tell me this was just a dream you had???? If this really happened, you need to re-think what the term "responsible gun owner" means.
Maybe he was telling a story 20 years prior and it sticks in his head because of how off-the-wall it was? It was 110% irresponsible, granted.
Pile-ons always make me feel bad. I don't think the guy thinks it's acceptable to do that, today, if we would ask him.
