Handle Modifications... The Complete Guide (Hopefully)

say what...handle mods
done that.

Here is a good one from trevytrev, on making liners.

I have bigger hands and as it comes from the factory the BK9 doesn't feel quite like the BK2 does. So a easy fix for this issue is to add liners and I received a great tip here on the Becker forum to use game/dvd cases and cut the liners out of that. I saw someone green and I thought about a DVD case that I have that is orange and I thought that would be pretty cool to have orange liners. First thing though is I had to go to the used video store here and pick up another orange case. I walked out with Garfield the movie for $4.99, at least my kids will watch the movie while I destroy the case:D

Pics are under crappy light but you'll get the point.

The tools I used were a pen, sheet metal snips, SAK knife's awl, allen wrench, file and razor blade.

I took the handles off and traced them on the DVD case and cut them out. Forgot to take pics of the liners before putting the knife back together but here is the cases with the holes.

I matched them up with the handles and used the awl to make the holes so they would be precise.

I then screwed the handles together with the two liners in between and used the razor blade to cut off any extra liner that hangs over. Then when flush I used the file to even things out a bit and to rough up the handles a bit. I still need to do the full handles with the file, just did the liner parts at this point.

Unscrewed the handles and reassembled them back together on the knife with liners in place and here you have it.

I have a few touch ups to do but I like it, looks pretty sweet but more importantly it feels great now, much more like the BK2 in my hand. Took me about 20 minutes to do this project and if you didnt have any cases you could probably score two for under $10. Next project is tomorrow, time to get naked! I'll post better pics of the whole thing tomorrow when I'm done stripping it and touching everything up.

Jarrah wood scales owned by HandofCod:

Hi again guys - the blade just landed so here are the pics! (Apologies for the crappy lighting, it was either harsh loungeroom lights or harsher flash :o )

Moose you asked me to message you when your sheath arrived. I thought what the hey, I'll post it here for everyone to see!

Huge thanks for the amazing sheath - it compliments the blade and handle perfectly!

This is the color of the aftermarket micarta scales after sanding and buffing.

(they look better on the 77 with stainless hardware.)

Tom Gannon stipples a homemade BK10:

After I saw Widerstands stippled handle, I knew I had to give it a try. Off to Home Depot and get the cheapest Soldering Iron. Round tip in and away we go. Oh, it is good to have the tip a little flat. It keeps it on the surface and spreads out the melted material.

Halfway through and I'm starting to see different colors and Unicorns and a Leprechaun
dancing on my lap. Not the lap dance I was hoping for.

Thought I'd put my initials on it, but knew it would disappear.

Have not had a chance to use the knife with the texture, but like the way it feels. Be curious
how it compares out in the field.

And Marathonman puts out some stunning wooden scales....

Here is a truck bedliner spray mod offered up by mat_890:

Alright, I first need to say I did not invent this mod. If I knew who did, I would give them credit for their idea but I can't remember when or where I first say it. I imagine its a pretty common one but I figured I would post anyway and give my experience.:)

So all you need to do this mod is a can of truck bed liner and a cup of white sugar. Here is how I chose to apply it.

Take the handle slabs off and give them a light spray of the truck bed liner (its dries to a hard plastic). Try not to coat the handles evenly so you get a raised and textured 'speckle' feel. I did 5 light coats to build up a good layer of the stuff, let it dry and then tried it out for a few days before I decided to go further. I also crammed cotton in the hardware holes so it wouldn't gum up when the screws went back in.

The grip was a little better at this point but I wanted something with a little more friction. I took the slabs back off, gave the handle a final, slightly thinker coat and then dusted the handles with sugar. When it was dry I dissolved the sugar and the handles were finished.

You can see how it turned out below, I tried to shoot the pics to enhance the texture but I'm not the best with a camera :p Overall the knife still looks great but it feels even better.

There is now a lot of grip, much more then micarta or even some rubber handles. If you like smooth handles this is not something you should consider, but for me this 7 dollar mod was well worth it.

My BK2 is now perfect  I guess its time to get a 9 :D

Here are some textured micarta scales that I did with a diamond file, I also made some videos about it.
