Handle Modifications... The Complete Guide (Hopefully)

Another set of Osage Orange, got working too fast and screwed up the hexes on the opposite side, i guess I'll keep these ones.

I would have any knife I own wear your mess ups. Looking good!

I appreciate the complement. It wasn't a cosmetic flaw. Those hex nut have a special cut on them to hold the nut tight so they don't spin when cranking down the bolts. I oversized the the hexes and the nuts spin on two of the three holes when tightening. Just wasn't paying close enough attention.

Seems we don't have a handle slab tutorial in here. If anyone would like, I can make up a pair of BK2 cocobolo and do a pic tutorial. I don't really have much use for another pair though, so someone would have to claim them.

Yeah man, I did one once upon a few months ago but I like to see another tutorial on it. Your way might be better that mine. Create your own thread or attach it to the other one. None of us is as smart as all of us. I'm learning something everytime I make a new set.

Videos might be good too. Oh and I claim the cocobolo slabs, in advance.

I do them a bit different from you, but not too much, and your tutorial is plenty good. I think if I do one, I'll do it strictly with hand tools, the poor man's way, excepting the sanding. Gonna use a cheap belt sander, since that shouldn't be too hard to come by for the folks without tools.

I was kinda thinking I'd want the scales to go to someone who doesn't have your obvious skills though, and actually needs some new scales to replace their Grivory. Whattaya think? If I send em to you, would you be up for making some for another BH member who needs new scales?

I don't generally do the wood carving of the holes either, not having wood carving tools. I usually just leave a large enough hole for them to sit in.

The other thing I do is use stain and a glove to help guide my shaping, so that I can get it to be as comfortable as possible for a hand. So mine tend to be a bit more comfortable for the dominant hand than the non dominant one.

I use mostly hand tools for mine, except the drill press, thats a must. Do a giveaway man, or a contest. I haven't worked with any Cocobolo yet. I try to get them as close to Ethans design as possible because for me it's comfortable. I just had a customer bring me some Madrone so I'm looking forward to doing up some of those. Good chatting man, keep putting up pictures.

I got permission from JohnP at BCUSA to post this. He used desert ironwood for the scales. Two 14's and an 11. Beautiful work:

I've never done it to a knife but on a few of my gun grips myself and others have used non-skid tape from the hardware store like what you would put on stairs or skateboards. it works very well for that and I've also done it to a mini-maglite. I might try that on a blade down the road.

From left to right thats, Army ACU camo on my 7, OD green pants micarta(looks blue gray), Zebra wood stabilized, Stabilized Bird's eye maple (not done) and some kind of south american or african hardwood on my BK77.

All these beautiful, exotic wood slabs are amazing!
Truly an awesome talent you guys have!

To help myself and all (future) modders. Especially the easy stainless hardware mod. What is the correct screw and bold size of the hardware? Metric and/or Imperial.
