Hard use folder tasks??

slice some free hanging TP

whittle some hair

dry shaving your whole face well.

Yes, well the above mentioned are not really tasks. And even if they are I said 90 percent. If you need to do those tasks regularly, I agree that you need a slicing optimized knife.

how did in my whole post did you misconstrue that my knife is not a knife?

You've been saying for two pages that you wanted a slicer, and that thicker knives don't "cut"(pun intended ) it for you. Your posted reply to my post was that it depended on my definition of what a knife was and you mentioned that a SG endura did not cut well enough for you. You've been saying that a knife is a single minded tool which therefore implies that a tool that is not single minded is not a knife. What other conclusion can I make?

But you've evaded answering the question what EDC tasks can't a tough knife handle?

what about like I said, moist egg carton?

i need to do that weekly and it's a major task. My co workers use disposable razorblades and need to change them constantly before I need to retouch my Endura.

my sg endura struggles to do that, I can't imagine anything thicker cutting that nasty stuff all day. It binds, it easily tears(which is something you don't want to happen),and it destroys edges.

I have seen videos of a Busse FFBM whittling hair and they are .320" thick 10" blade.

That's not hard if the knife is sharp enough and the edge geometry is right, TP that is.

Shaving is also edge geometry and sharpness.

Cutting soggy egg cartons all day? :barf: Maybe you need to look for a new job? That one sounds like "the new guy at the chicken farm" kinda job. Not that there's any shame in good honest work.

Maybe you can upgrade and be able to buy a good knife like a ZT 0301. In fact Kershawguy has blems that go for a song. I re-profiled mine "very slightly" just a couple degrees per side and worked on it with diamond stropping compunds, now it's got a mirror edge and would make short work of any egg carton. With S30V you'll get tremendous edge retention also. Just my $.02 :)

Stabbing holes into compressed cardboard so I can fit the baler wires through?

Doesn't sound like a task I would use my FFG Endura for.

But for the most part, I like "hard use" folders because of the snug way they fit in my hand with those abnormally long fingers. My Endura just feels too light, long, and narrow. It's like using a pen knife with a 4 inch blade.

I also feel that even if a thin lightweight slicer does the same job, I sincerely doubt that any of them would end up with little to no blade play at the end of the day when put through extreme cutting tasks(like what Ankerson does in his hard use tests). Heck, my Endura will develop blade play from cutting thick pieces of cardboard once or twice.

You do bring up a good point there about the blade play issues.

I have had some thinner folders develop blade play from just cutting cardboard, and not just a little play either.

If one is doing some harder cutting tasks the thinner handles will bite into your hands more than the thicker ones will also.

That doesn't happen so much when cutting open that bag of chips though. ;)

Primarily...(opening a can of food for example).
No offense, but that is a thing, you just don´t need a "Hard use" folder for.

I have opened cans (milk or food) made from steel, with my old Puma folder, wich has a hollow ground sabre grind with a 2.5 mm thick blade.

In fact, that thick blade may stick into the can more, than you could easily cut with it.

I like 4mm thick blades too. But all it is about is: Prying and batoning. What else?

How about upping my confidence level when the going gets tough. That's worth a whole, whole lot to me.

My reason to carry a Hard Use Folder.

Mostly because it makes me feel kinda bad-ass. It's fun for us knife folk.

Well, the same counts on me, it really does, but then that´s an explanation, but not a reason. Isn´t it?:D
