Hardware stores suck?

I don't go to a hard ware store for knives. I go a local mom and pop jewelry store. The owner's son likes knives, so he has a case of knives along with the cases of jewelry. I got it easy. I look at knives, my wife looks at jewelry.:D

I don't mind paying a little more for a knife from them because I'd rather see them get my hard earned money than some bozo I don't know.

Since someone dragged this up from the depths of 2005, here's a mixed update on the local TrueValue store that did not have any knives last year:

Good news, they have a brand new display case full of knives. :)

Bad news, all of the knives are Chinese Old Timers. :(

I recently bought a Case medium stockman with amber bone handles/cv steel, for about 50 bucks, at the local hardware store. I can't remember if its True Value or Ace, I think its Ace. Anyway, they have a selection of Case, Victorinox and Schrade. Not a great selection, but for the average knife user that has been using those brands for years, it was okay. They also had Leatherman multi tools, and store brand multi tools. I didn't even see a knife selection at the Home Depot across the street, and the local hardware stores, both mom and pop and big chain, don't have much better than the Ace. There is a local shop called Kefauvers that has some old knives. I bought a few old Case SS from the 80's, he also had some old Barlows, mainly Colonials, looked like someone sold their collection to the owner. The True Value in Hampstead MD has a good traditional selection, the new Schrade, Case, Buck and Victorinox.

Hell, you can't find good stuff at Gander Mountain or Dicks Sporting Goods anymore.

Old Timer knives are now made in China. In case you didn't hear, the Schrade plant went under.

You'd be better off looking for a Case in CV steel.

The other option is to get a Buck made in America (some are now made in China).

Or do the eBay thing and get an older Schrade (Old Timer & Uncle Henry) that is stamped U.S.A.

that is the way , harrdware stores buy all cheap made in chine crap and carry nothing worth yor while . a tool nut joint does have a few quality knives

Guyon, you bring up a good point. Most people don't know that Schrade went out of business. I pointed that out to someone who was looking at the Schrades while I was buying the Case, and they would not buy the knife simply based on the fact it was made in China.
