Harness Jacks - Special Orders

I'd never heard of the harness jack before until Charlie started educating us about them. Got HJ1-3 and each is its own unique personality. I'd also never given much thought to the different punches. It was great to learn about the different punch patterns.

I think HJ5, based on the forum knife frame, is one of the sweetest to date.

Very cool pattern, and great history too. Thanks for the stories behind the knives, Charlie!

I have probably twelve different punches on as many different knives, but no true Harness Jack patterns. I've got to go find me a couple now for the collection.

I'm amazed at how efficient some of the punches are, on some of my knives. (Mostly Scout knives, but I have several Cattleman/Stockman types with punches too.) Some work much better than others.

Charlie,
thanks for your story, and for literally introducing me (among many others, I suspect) to a pattern with such charme.
I don't know if I will ever get one, or even see and handle one...but sure I'd like to. Personally, I do like the 2011 BF knife, but it can't compete with the HJ5.
And as for the HJ6 project...I'll keep an eye on it

Charlie, Thanks for sharing that info, and the
knives! All the HJ's you've posted has made
me buy a few HJ's. Thank you for that! It's a
great pattern and I do enjoy them!

Well, as we know, we all owe Charlie a lot with the knowledge we are privileged that he shares with us, we get to have a peek at his most awesome collection, and then we are lucky enough to be able to share in his SFO of late, Im glad to say I have the arrival of the Ebony and the Jigged Bone versions, and they are just simply outstanding knives...they really are.
Charlie my friend, thank you for everything you have done for us...right now I am sitting quite blown away looking at some most recent arrival of beautiful knives....yes Life is Good folks!

The HJ "bug" is one I am happy to pass along! But, I must warn you my friends - - there is no known cure!!:D

Thanks for all the nice compliments!

Charlies interest in Harness jacks prompted him to email/call me soon after I started making slipjoints and selling them here on Bladeforums. He challenged me to make a harness jack. This challenge is one of the things that really peeked my interest in building vintage style slipjoints. Bladeforums and this sub-forum is very fortunate to have a man like Charlie that has such a passion for these knives. Without his passion we would not have the interest and appreciation for harness jacks that so many of us share now.

Thanks for everything you do for the vintage knife community, and sharing this remarkable story of the rebirth of a classic pattern.

Ken you and everyone are welcome. I'm happy to have friends along for the ride!
All the old patterns deserve recognition.
It is also an interesting phenomenon, to see the contrast of approaches between custom and production makers - each talented in their own areas.
Sometimes I feel we are in the second golden age of American cutlery.

I think you are very right there Charlie, guys like us in the future will get hold of these knives, and do some research and find out about them, and put up their "holographic" images of their find, and marvel over the old quality workmanship.

Holographic images!!:D:D

Am I ever down with that!!:thumbup:

Imagine full 3-D, turning slowly in front of you, showing you all the details and surfaces!!
Glowing etches . . . . . . molecularly sharpened edges . . . . . .huhhh? Ummm. . . .??
Where am I??

Yeehawww!!!

You know you've got a friend, when he hucks a bunch of scrap metal into an envelope, and fires it off to you! Arrived today.

Napanoch parts 1.jpg

NOT your usual scrap metal! A genuine Napanoch punch and blade!
Thanks (you know who you are!)

This is a great thread. When I was checking out the new posts last night I noticed myself and the most master cutler out there were reading. Does this previous post give an indication of HJ6?

HJ6 will have a different blade and a different punch. Also a different pattern . . . .hmmmmm . . .other than that - yes; yes it does!:D

They did Jake! Bill was reluctant, but he loves a challenge.
Now I'm happy to say, he's got the bug. Next year isn't that far away!

I had no idea of any of this! Thank you Waynorth for sharing this. It makes me appreciate my GEC harness jack that much more.

I will have to get a picture to add it to your thread if that works for you :)
