Harrassed about your EDC knives?

the thing in melbourne is that most the people they are trying to stop from carrying knives, are young asian males. But me being asian and in my late teens, well.............i dont think id do too well explaining to a police officer why im carrying around a little pocket knife. even though i generally see most knives (especially those i have) as tools.

Hey shadowman - (this brings us back to the topic of this thread) I do now remember a time when I flicked out my spyderco in public and had a couple of people visibly cringe. It was when I was visiting - you guessed it - Melbourne. I was a train ststion in Yarraville and a coin had got stuck in the ticket machine. There was a little crowd of people behind me waiting to get a ticket and they stepped back like I had farted. Thinking back on it - it was a silly move, now that I know about the knife laws in Victoria. :footinmou Also makes my lecture to im2smart4u about blending in when I visit the big smoke seem self righteous. Aplogies dude.

Are you Vietnamese shadowman? Most of the knife related gang stuff in Perth seems to be second generation kids from Saigon - They'll grow out of it. The Italians and Greeks where doing the same thing 30 years ago. Still safer than the Nyoongar kids that I grew up with who used to throw spears - with deadly accuracy. Copped one in the back of the leg once and still have the small round scar like a cigarette burn.

ahh yarraville, that station is on my line (i live a bit further out)

people these days dont understand the usefulness of knives. i remember crean suggesting that knives be treated the same way as guns are in this country, i assume he ment licensing or even tougher laws. hes probably lost my vote when it comes to an election

i assume youre asian as well. im chinese. vietnamese do have a bad stereotype, all the 'gangsters' running around stabbing each other and stuff. its unfortunate. just cos they have so much to prove. and it pretty much affects people like us as well.

nyoongar are aboriginal right ? throwing spears................thats getting pretty serious ! in melbourne, you hardly see any natives.

No I'm not Asian - but my best mate Tang is Vietnamese and my lovely lady is Sri Lankan, so I guess I am by default. Funny thing about Tang is that he's not a fluent english speaker but gets by. He's also a mad Collingwood nut and when he's watching a game and gets amped up english starts to fail him and he goes off on a huge rant at the umpires in Vietnamese - very funny.

Nyoongar is the SW WA tribe (or Nation more like it)where I grew up. Up north is Yamadji and out east is Wongi, further north is a huge Kalaidascope of different mobs. Nyoongar are a pround warrior people who got decimated in the last century. When I went to school they where as wild as anything and chucking spears was a lunchtime activity. Just like playing kick to kick, they would stand about 50 yards apart and throw spears while dodging the other ends spears. This was a game - hardley anybody ever got hurt. ahhh drifting off topic again....

It's a shame about the stereotypes. The media doesn't help with it's 'knife weilding asian gangs' scare mongering. From where I see it it is a classic 2nd generation migrant thing. Kids trying to adjust to one society at home and another one at school or work, so they tend to band together. After a generation or two it tends to blend away.

ahh, i confused you as asian due to your user name. i was wrong ! :)

actually, i dont know many asian people who like football.........in fact, most asians i know arnt really into a sport as it is. one of my good friends is a weightlifter.......others i know much around with martial arts. but no team sports (soccer, footy, tennis, etc)

i first heard of the Nyoongar in that little SBS short film 'Confessions of a head hunter'. something like that. it was quite interesting.

most dangerous thing i did when i was a kid was either run around like crazy, or climb trees.................

anyway, getting off topic. but youre right, those things will get out of it once they start feeling like they are australian.

It seems that no matter where you are, people will object to edged weapons. We just all have to live withit as best we can, an practice our hobby within limits, sadly, laid down by others.

Most people are afraid of knives because they start thinking about being cut, or have been in the past...

I like to keep my EDC knives concealed as much as possible these days.

Seems today people are very sensative about alot of things, Knives and guns alike...and group them both under the same heading as weapons.

Sure I would rather carry my 5 3/4" CS Tanto (I can conceal it in the fall and winter) or Trail Master, but I carry my Recon 1 instead.

We have to follow the law and use common sense to get by these days and be aware of who is around us at all times..;)

And remember what might be cool to you as the owner of that nice knife might not be to the person nearby that sees it..:)

As it does matter what other people think these days of political correctness....

IMO what sheeple don't see can't hurt them. I'll carry what I want unless it is illegal. While I could care less what fools think, I am also not "in your face" with it, so few people notice.

Exactly....:D:D

So many things going on in this thread.

First, i too question the need to carry so many knives. Its true, my daily life isnt that demanding knife-wise, usually i need a knife a few times a day to open a few packages shipped to me, or packaging with food inside of it, and believe it or not, the knife i always have with me and the one i use daily is a 2.5", 5 million year old, very sharp, serrated fossil shark tooth, which i wear as a large pendant on a chain around my neck. It seems to get me by, so its hard for me to understand why someone would need 5 or 6 knives on their person daily, but i suppose some people do have jobs where they require different knives for different cutting jobs, and certainly, by all means, carry whatever you think you need. I do also keep a Chive in my car and use it fairly often.

My shark tooth obviously is never regarded as being a weapon, though i suppose it could be used as such. I just had to fly to NY a few days ago, and it just occured to me as i was writing this post that the serrated and sharp shark tooth hanging from my neck, which i wore onto the plane could have been considered a type of knife, but it never came up. And after all, so FEW planes are hijacked with fossil shark teeth. :)

I live in Florida and i have a concealed weapons permit and often carry a small .32 in my pocket, so i have no need to carry a knife for self defense, but the odd thing is, because, a few years ago, a judge misunderstood a statute, auto knives are now technically illegal in FL, so, i can walk around with my Glock .45 inside my waistband, loaded with 14 rounds of +p Hydra-Shoks, and 2 more mags in my pockets, and thats fine, but i can be arrested if i have a small Microtech UDT? That makes a lot of sense. But after hearing about the sorry state of affairs in England or Australia, i suppose i should be VERY pleased with my situation, though of course theres always room for improvement.
